Not necessarily - a raid 1 (mirror) disk is much more reliable than a single disk, and it's exactly double the components - you're spreading the risk. By having two independant robot arms, each one is as likely to fail as having just one, but you still have a working arm. What you're talking about is double the complexity in a single system - I'm talking about fault tolerant redundancy.

Actually the whole point of my suggestion is just to have a more flexible platform for the ground team to work up solutions with, whatever form it might take. They seem to be pretty good at it, often going beyond the design limitations. Think of what they can accomplish with designed in freedom to reconfigure the mission while it's in progress??

maybe extraterrestrial robots should go with a vast assortment of tools and materials - you never know what you'll run into untill you get there and the ground teams seem quit adept adept at coming up with solutions - provided they have the tools and materials, like a general purpose arm (make that TWO arms, in case one breaks the other can fix it) and a storage locker full of duc[t,k] tape.

I think that was really the problem - too many companies, and employees too, were overextending their skills and capabilities - their mouths were writing checks their brains couldn't cash. The place I worked in the early half of the 90's would actually sell a product to a customer (after verifying their credit and ability to pay) THEN go back and tell the engineers what to design and build AND deliver it in 3 days! But they had to because that's what the competition appeard to be doing.

Lately, I've been buying a lot of stuff and have had a great success rate, I've been real happy with stuff recently.

A local fm station is b'casting hdfadio - I can see the digital sidebands in a spectrum analyzer but 1) the cheapest radio I could find for it are high end gear and 2) the encoding format is closed source so I can't hack together a receiver. So, yeah, that's two strikes against it right off. That'll boost ratings, make it more expensive and difficult to listen to crappy content. I sometimes listen to DRM b'casts on shortwave (Radio Canada, BBC, Sweden, Germany) because I can get a free decoder, DReaM - it sounds great (when propagation is good) and wish there were more of that.
