Start a process on the 133 and it was migrated to the 200. Start 2 processes and one would get migrated to the 200, showing up in 'mon' as a load of '2', and the other would run on the 133 as a load of '3'. I had to launch 6 processes before the 486 kicked in with a load of '12' running one process, with the other 5 distributed with 3 on the 200 (6) and 2 on the 133 (also 6). Next I got and tried the parallel make MPMake. A kernel compile using MPMake w/ switch -j3 on the cluster took 18 minutes, while on the 200 alone it took 12 :)) Obviously I need more/faster boxes to make the cost of load balancing worthwhile but it basically works as advertised.

But is there really any serious business that decides to utilize some existing GPL'd codebase and does NOT understand the obligations in doing so? He makes it sound like a business extends existing code for a profitable venture and then suddenly realizes, "Oh God! We have to give up all our hard work!! Damn those OSS zealots!! That takes maybe an hour, plus maybe a few hours servicing user complaints (this is a little over 50 PC's) - which usually comes to "you'll have to get the boss to spend more $$$ to do that" or a simple reboot, or just sympathize with someone about a Msft oddity, then it's off to d/l OSS and 'playing' with things like, currently, getting a Mosix cluster up on a few old pentiums. Also have to spend some weekend hours doing server maintenance. I've trained my super to not bug me with 'busywork' - I'll make my own damn busywork that also keeps me a sharp, up-to-date sysadmin.

Like, did you know that once upon a time, tomatoes or 'love apples' were considered poisonious to eat? It took someone to make a dramatic show out of eating one to convince people that it can be a valuable garden vegetable. This is even worse, not only do people constantly spread untruths about something they know nothing about (such as your referances to 'excess use of canabis' - too much alcohol can kill a person (and it's legal remember) but 'too much dope' has no such effect) but you can't demonstrate it's harmlessness cuz of the damn stupid persecution! I can remember a time when "Wildwood Weed" was played on the radio, but the former Rep. Gov. of California during the 60's put an end to all that hippy stuff. I also think when the US banned canabis they were not only giving Dupont artificial fibers a political/financial windfall, but were waging a culture war on the 'lazy Mexican' Marijuana image!

Mr St Law Sir - step out of your image mongering world of advertising and get real for a moment. How many computer system networks have YOU administered lately?

Specifically, in my office of 50+ machines I have a Linux mail server that runs flawlessly, day in, day out, it's perfect. Not very sexy but it gets our business done reliably and pays the bills w/o a lot of pain. However, while I'm trying to find time to put together a cluster out of old parts for future database growth, I'm constantly interrupted by the Windows desktops user having this problem, having that problem - and Windows is full of 'issues' - that's how they keep people on the upgrade treadmill. As a systems engineer I find the Msft products woefully lacking and have become a definite liability for career progress - unless I hire someone (more "cost of ownership") to run around plugging up holes in the dike so I can get on with progressive projects, w/o having to run like the red queen just to maintain the status quo. Other admins, I imagine, rely on Msft flakiness and constant need for attention to justify their existance, keeps them busy, a faux appearance of productivity.

Maybe I'm being an unrealistic cunt but I like *quality* well built, finely tuned machines like German automobiles - however we seem to be stuck with using broken down Yugo's just to keep the Yugo company's cash flow going with incessant service problems - just because investors mistakenly think Msft is a "leading technology company" - what utter bullcrap. Take your fool 'em all consumer mind games and shove it - I just want to work with and sell quality information systems to appreciative customers, w/o Mr vaporware spoiling everything with his crud.

Anyway, the point of this thread was the companies may come and go, but the ideal lives on - just look at the cp/m days - lots of small business stepped up and failed before IBM created the PC mkt with an *open* hw platform and handed Msft a lucrative market on a silver platter. I'm expecting the same thing to happen here. At the end of the day, the paying customer must benefit, otherwise it's a bullshit job.
