It is possible. If you've bought a SanDisk stick lately, they started put all these stupid 'bonus' utilities on the stick that auto-launch whenever you connect it. I found this extremely annoying and was surprised that they'd do this to their customers. I did finally find a post where someone had found a removal tool on the SanDisk site (it's near impossible to remove on your own - stuff is cached and keeps re-installing) and cleared it that way. That will be the last thing I buy from this company as I no longer trust them.

That said, I've been amazed of the spin that the conservative media has been putting on this. For one thing, they're all questioning the timing and making this look like a liberal smear campaign. For another, why is everyone focused on outing the page instead of protecting the identity of someone who may have been a victim of sexual predation? Is this a campaign get to the truth or to discredit the source? Where are all of the conservatives yelling "won't someone think of the children?"

One thing is certain. It's a long way until November and the mud slinging is just starting on both sides.

Okay, we in the US all know that there's not enough time before November elections to fix this. So I have a very simple solution. First we ban the sale of all flash memory for 7 days prior to the elections. Second, we put gigantic super-electromagnetic field generators in the doorways of all the polling places. This way we can ensure that any potential election fraudsters that try to smuggle in memory cards will find them wiped out when they open the Diebold machines with their hotel bar keys.

Of course, anyone else walking through the door stands to have their ATM and credit cards wiped out, but hey, it's a small price to pay for Democracy, don't you think.

Osborne never hides his feeling about auditors
I had to smile when I read this as it took me back to my first financial audit years back. I nervously awaited our internal auditor who had a reputation for being completely ruthless in his approach and did not give a fig if heads rolled as a result of his findings. When he first met with me, he began with a story: "You know, we auditors are often compared to soldiers, and your brothers-in-arms in the field. The only difference with us is that we fix bayonets to our rifles, and go around stabbing our own troops while they lay wounded on the ground. Now, with that out of the way let's begin your audit." I suppose that would have made most people nervous, but I was charmed by his candor, and actually wound up getting along with him quite well in the end.

I suppose my point in telling that is that you can look at auditors two different ways. Either they're there to help you, or they are there to get in your way and point fingers. I believe that most genuinely good auditors try to be more like the former and less like the latter. And you can learn a lot from them if you remain objective and cooperative. God help you if you get the other kind though as they are usually just nothing but self-promoting tattle-telling toadies.

IANACP (Clinical Pathologist), but I think there is a lot of truth in what you're saying. People (my sister is an example) who obsessively clean using super antibacterials are actually sicker on average than those who don't. And since you never kill all microbes with anything short of complete sterilization, overuse of antimicrobials usually just breeds stronger and nastier bugs. This is a serious issue in Japan, and it's becoming one in the US. I agree (to a point) that the more the immune system is exposed to relatively harmless bugs, the stronger it gets.

If you do look at the link I posted though, it's quite interesting to note that 64% of the entire federal budget is earmarked for military spending. 110 billion alone is designated for 'the global war on terror'. Maybe this article should have a link back to a /. article I remember from several weeks ago about scientists trying to create a black hole generator. Seems to me like they could learn a good deal about creating black holes from reviewing the federal budgeting process.

I strongly agree with your point of view, but logic didn't stop the NFL from doing exactly the same thing by trademarking the term "Superbowl" TM. So now only 'officially sanctioned' products and broadcasters are able use the word without express written permission. One local radio station here hosts a 'Super Block Party' every year to watch the game because they aren't allowed to use the term "Superbowl" TM. Seems to me like they're losing an awful lot of free publicity by doing this. The only thing I can think of is that they must already be rolling in so much money that they don't care.

    It's absolutely ridiculous.
