Just by chance I was looking into similar information just hours earlier today and happened upon similar solutions offered by the WSJ. The most useful site in my option was payscale. It offered really detailed information about many interesting things, like salaries of recent graduates of my college in a variety of fields (assuming that these students are telling the truth, and gave me pretty good insight into what the career I am heading into should pay.

On second thought, maybe Microsoft should take away restart. I mostly use it so that I can reboot into Linux.

Although I agree that simpler may be easier for some people I like that Vista doesn't dumb down the options available to users. I like that the new explorer starts by default in the detailed view. I think that Joel's comments about removing restart aren't necessarily accurate. I use restart all of the time, not only when installing software. It's easier to do than shut down and power back up because I don' have to press any buttons.

I also find my self using the hibernate feature and also the suspend feature in Windows quite often as well, depending on how far I have to lug my laptop. I would really be missing the functionality of all these features. The features I never use are lock and switch user. Only one person ever uses my computer, and that's me so I don't have much use for these options but they don't bother me. I just wish it looked cooler and was easier to get to the options I use most often instead of turning out to be the "lowest common denominator".

On a tangent, I wish that Vista would allow you options when you create a user to customize the complexity of the options it gives you. Maybe a computer guru setting where it gives you all of the options for the shutdown menu and shows hidden folders and file extensions by default (I don't know if Vista does this or not) and then a beginners setting that just shows you the basics. I know that the first thing I do whenever I install XP is customize everything so that I can work faster: show full path in address bar, get rid of the common tasks pane, etc.

Wikipedia has some articles that you can download a "spoken article" .ogg file to listen to the article. This certainly isn't on the majority of articles but the possibility exists that a mobile phone user would be able to listen to these files. I was able to play .ogg files on my Nokia 6600 so all you would need to do is download the "spoken article." Sounds like a big hassle but I'm sure that this process could be streamlined with cheaper wireless bandwidth and more acceptance of the .ogg format.

Real was a big surprise for me too. I've refused to install real player, or real one player, or whatever the newest hyped name is, for some time now on any computer I come into contact with. Not only is it bad, it is intrusive. I highly recommend Real Alternative if you absolutely must play real files. It's worked perfectly fine for me.

I've used it in this way too just as a starting point and have to say it produces a good looking template that you can work with, albiet with confusing and extremely long source, because of many IE hacks of course. The site designer is slick and easy to use. I guess that this is just another free website page creator and hoster among many similar services. The only problems I've had are connecting to page creator. Too many "Oops! Google Page Creator is not currently available" or whatever rubish.

I actually started using this a few days before this story broke. I like being able to customize which theme is used by default. (I use the linux one because I think black just looks better than teal.) I used to use some Greasemonkey scripts to enable just about the same functionality that this extension does but the thing that I think is really missing from Greasemonkey is an auto script updater. One has been made http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/2296 but I'm sure that this works with very few scripts as of now.

Can we please try to keep this stuff out of the discussion and into the profiles where it belongs? -- you can just put the stuff here in your profile so I don't have to read it.
