I had the same question two weeks ago, and www.av-comparatives.org helped tremendously by providing comprehensive comparisons of free options such as Avira, Comodo, AVG, MSE and Avast in detection, proactive protection, performance and all-around usefulness. Depending on which of these you value most, I am sure their report summaries can be useful for you.
On a similar note, I'm stuck with Chkdsk freezing when I let it run on Vista booting... The disk seems to work well so far, but is there any (free) way to find out what might be wrong? I have seen other cases of this problem on the 'Net but no solutions so far:(
One: Please save screen estate on top and bottom of the documents, where it's most needed.
Two: With more and more widescreens, put stuff on the side, and let people choose which side (although for right-handed users, I would suggest left - I've been working with a touch-screen/tablet PC for some time now and it helps to keep my palm off menus when writing).
Three: display all the shortcuts when user presses ALT or CTRL.
Same thing for me in the Czech Republic (middle of Europe) - I pay approx. $5 for "basic" mobile Internet access (HTTP only), and with JoikuSpot, I get an AP on my Nokia phone.
I think it depends on how flexible you want your carreer prospects to be.
If you want to go deep and become an expert in your chosen area, I would (perhaps surprisingly) recommend getting a job now. Best learning is learning by doing.
If you want to keep your options open, being able to switch not only jobs but perhaps even specializations or industries, I would say go for your Master's. It will train your thinking rather than your skills.
This from someone who has done a BC in electrical engineering, Master's in IT (signal processing) Ph.D. in IT (object databases), then worked as a security and financial auditor, now teaches financial management, and is certified in all these fields:o)
Have you considered Phun Physics ( http://www.phunland.com/wiki/Home )?
It's a 2D environment where you can build "machines" a little similar to The Incredible Machine, but obeying many physical laws. So far, everyone who has seen the demo video, from my 4-year old son to some Ph.D. educated friends, has fallen in love with it:o)
I like this argument, and it also has a cute flipside.
Try asking your boss this: if he expects you to break some rules now, does he expect you to keep the rules he is setting?
I'd say it is definitely worth standing up and saying - I will not do this because I feel it's bad. But you can also count on me not to do anything bad to you. That's a fair deal isn't it?
