Well, also in an unregulated capitalist system. However I don't know of any of those...
The only items where supply and demand truly set the price are black market items. I mean once something you sell is illegal, do you really care about any other restrictions or regulations?
"Oh and by the way, 'for the good of the people' does not mean 'whatever the government decides is for the good of the people'. Let the people think for themselves."
"The government" is people. There is no such entity that is "the government" - it is just people making decisions about (and often for) other people.
I work at a university in the US and I am paid hourly and can work remotely. What difference does it make? If you are going to slack and say you were working when you aren't, what does it matter whether you are hourly or salary?
Hahahaha you are right. I mean who in their right mind would ever want to search through their address book?? Ludicrous! And who wouldn't want to have to take/send in their phone to have a simple battery replaced?? I know I enjoy spending the extra time/money doing this!!
RoadRunner was much faster than Comcast when I had that service. Unfortunately Comcast bought RoadRunners' customers in my area, and RoadRunner went away....
It's Craptacular!
"Just over two years ago I sold my TV and DVD player, gave away the DVDs and CDs I had to relatives and friends. Since then I haven't watched TV, watched a movie (on disc or in the theater), listened to mainstream music, or otherwise involved myself with their product."
Yeah because burying your head in the sand and isolating yourself from the activities everyone else partakes in will make you a much more well rounded person. Listen preachy, you don't have to avoid all mainstream media. Just don't let it be spoon fed to you like pablum with you believing every word you see or hear. That is what your brain is for - to filter the information you are given, and decide for yourself what it really means (or doesn't mean). You CAN watch some light entertainment without being brutally brainwashed and corrupted by "Hollywood".
Funny, when I lived there, all the Cariocas thought the same things about parts of southern and northern Brasil. I guess everyone wants to think that where they live is not the "worst" part of the country.
And I feel they owe me at least a few solid albums by good bands for all the crap I have bought from them over the years... And to possibly be treated like a valued customer instead of a hardened criminal...
What I always wondered about Huggy Bear, is why would people keep telling things to him?? How long would it take to figure out that anything said to Huggy generally makes it to the police in a day or so? I mean sure they are criminals, but that doesn't automatically make them stupid...
"3. speeding tickets: US$ 50 for going up to 120% the maximum speed, US$ 100 for going up to 150% the maximum speed, US$ 250 for going more than 150% the maximum speed... second and next tickets have the value doubled (not each time, just US$ 100, 200, 500..."
I don't know where you live, but when I lived in Rio (Barra da Tijuca) I was only pulled over for speeding once in about 6-7 months and I sped everywhere. Didn't even have a driver's license in Brasil, but US$10 was enough to have the police send me on my way without a ticket. Granted this was in the early to mid 90s and things may have changed a bit, but someone actually getting a ticket for a "moving violation" was absolutely unheard of when I was there.

"I am not a lawyer"? Here I always thought people were talking about some kinky new product from Apple - the iAnal.
Apparently IANARS. (I am not a rocket scientist)
In the USA we may have slower internet connections, but we don't have ABBA or Ace of Base. I'd say we are getting the better end of the deal.
You must be new here

And Thunderbird is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Just let your eyes glaze over the Outlook parts and pay attention to the Thunderbird parts.
Sounds like a Geek Squad employee.

"The other two are laughable."

"Try searching for .pwl.. enjoy."
Why would I care about a Windows 95/98 password file? You can have full access to either OS without it.
Whoever smelled it Dell'd it?
Dude! You're getting a fart!
"What have I been bantering about since I got on /.?"
Good question. We would ALL like to know.

"You know you nerds owe me a lot over money for that beer you drank tonight, goddammit.!"
"And Hacker is the clear victor over Cracker in that cage match! Next up - Vi vs. Emacs in a Battle Royale!"
Then let me explain it like this - this is an example of "jeitinho americano".
"So your point is that any businessman should expect to commit crimes and not be punnished?"
You must be new here. Welcome to the United States of America.

"Cisco officials were pwned by Brazilian authorities for not bribing enough of the right people with the right amount of money."
Parent is not trolling. I lived in Rio de Janeiro and that is EXACTLY how it is. Everyone is on the take, and no one is too secretive about it.
Are you kidding?? Why do you think Cheney is always "at an undisclosed location"??
"Because gambling is LEGAL in the US."
So is smoking cigarettes, but I can't do that in any privately owned businesses in my home state of Minnesota anymore.
