The decision isn't up to Netflix. They are at the mercy of the movie studios, who make the convoluted rules. If they had their way they would offer everything they had in all forms all the time. Unfortunately movie studios have deals with cable, streaming, theater, pay per view/cideo on demand, and DVD to contend with and the customer doesn't always win.

If you are really particular about when you want to watch something, sure. But i have over 300+ selections in my instant queue, so if something i wanted to watch isn't available, I watch something else. Compare this to a $50 cable bill where you have no control of what is on. I also know a lot of people who dumped their expensive cable bills for the $10 Netflix streaming and never looked back.

So if i did like HD documentaries, where would i go? Netflix in my opinion is still the best paid streaming service in terms of quality and selection. There are free sites with great selection but the quality is so poor I can't even watch. Or they look great but only have 20 things to choose from.

I plan on canceling my DVD part too, but also plan on keeping the streaming only, and Redbox if i need something that isn't streaming. So all in all Netflix doesn't make any more money off me a month, but they aren't going to be making any less, and are not going to have to pay for my postage anymore. For me I was only getting about 2-3 DVDs per month, but i use the streaming stuff daily. That is definitely worth the $10 per month for me. Until there are other free sites with anywhere near the selection and quality Netflix has, I will be sticking with them. Youtube, Hulu, etc. suck compared to Netflix.

I would guess it has more to do with licensing agreements with the film studios than it does storage costs. Storage is ridiculously cheap these days. And while some streaming titles may not be available at certain times, once something is available for streaming, it doesn't go away permanently, so the library is still growing. If something i want to watch isn't available now, I chose something else in my streaming queue of 300+ titles.

Like I said earlier, Netflix isn't stupid and have made many right moves in the past. Check back in a year. I predict Netflix will still be the #1 streaming service and it's customer base will not be smaller than it is now. Time will tell. But considering they have survived and been profitable for 14 years, I don't think this decision is going to put them out of business. They seem to understand what their customers want. When I signed up with them back in 1999, I was paying $4.99/month. My rates have gone up twice since then, and yet I am still a customer. It isn't like they have been raising rates and not adding to their library.

  9. Re:Doubling the value! on Netflix Announces Streaming Only Plans and Higher Prices for DVDs · · Score: 1

Netflix is constantly adding things to their streaming side of things, so it isn't like they are charging more and offering less. And Netflix is still the best paid streaming service available.

reality: most people will either just go to streaming only (like I plan on) and some will pay more. in the end I am sure Netflix will not lose much in the deal. They have been doing things right from the beginning - they jumped on the streaming video stuff when other physical media only rental places didn't. Most of those other places are no longer around and Netflix is thriving. I personally know a handful of people dropping their $50+ cable bills and getting the $10 Netflix streaming option. $10 is still way better than $50.

Well, that is kind of hard to do when you live in the US and are traveling to the US. (I can't help but notice Qantas or Ryan Air doesn't offer a lot of flights originating in and destined for US cities.) My choice is fly US airlines, or drive. That said I have gotten some bargain basement flight prices on some small US airlines that offer no perks. I am fine with that. I would rather save the $70 on my 3 hour flight than have the crew kiss my ass a little when odds are I will be drunk, sleeping, reading, or watching a movie the entire time. However flying on an international 12 hour plus flight i may consider spending a little extra.

I can tell you haven't flown a lot in the US pre 9/11 and then afterwards. Because if you are telling me the airlines are giving away MORE free things now (you don't even get a meal unless you pay for it now at all) then it is you who needs to do some more research. Getting a whole can of soda now does not necessarily mean things are going peachy for the airlines. look at the rising cost of fuel, the decline in passengers, and the increased security costs and then tell me with a straight face the airlines are doing much better than in pre 9/11 times. I have flown about 30 times - most of it pre 9/11 - and can tell you unequivocally airlines are offering less to customers now than before. Headphones, unlimited snacks (including peanuts which are now to spendy to offer), entire meals, and on international flights sometimes even beer all use to be free. You now pay for every one of those things. So sorry, but my personal anecdotal evidence trumps the fact that you flew 3 times and got a free soda. But screw anecdotal evidence. Like i said, look at the profit loss statements for airlines and compare them now to then. That is really all the evidence you need.

P.S. Asking who is being naive is hardly snarky or "overbearingly callous". Grow some skin.

A spam filter isn't a magical device that "just works" without you needing to do anything. Like I said now that I have mine pretty fine tuned, I get less than a handful of false positives every year. Don't like the spam filter? turn it off and get all that unwanted crap in your inbox instead. But for me, I think it is a godsend and works great. But then again I was willing to spend some time configuring it to work right in the beginning. No system is going to be perfect, but if it filters out 99.99% of spam and only gets a few false positives a year, that is a huge time/resource saver for me. Seeing the University I work for recently switched over to Gmail, I can say your experience is not the norm I am seeing. I am supporting about 75 users all using Gmail and their spam filter rarely gets any false positives, and mostly just filters out the crap. I think if a lot of people were seeing the same results as you were, nobody would be using the Gmail spam filter.

That is like saying the average of 2 and 1 million is 500001. Sure it is the average, but it doesn't really give you a good picture. For example the 'average" diets of Americans in the Northeast, the South, the Southwest, and the Midwest will all vary greatly. There was a whole bunch of them, so I am pretty confident I am not the only American who enjoys a decent real chocolate bar. People outside of the USA fail to remember how large and diverse the USA is. Lumping all "Americans" into one category is so ridiculous - we hardly ever all agree on anything let alone on most things.
