The Terrorism Task Force didn't catch him at all. The CTA caught him because they recognized his voice and kept him on the line until police could arrest him. Your whole point was you thought that the TTF shouldn't be involved at all, and I was saying this is exactly the sort of thing they take an interest in. Whether or not I feel a harsh sentence is warranted has nothing to do with my point. But since you asked, yes I think he deserves to be locked up for at least 5 years. That will give him some time to ponder why trying to crash trains is "kind of a big deal". The fact that he wasn't actually smart enough to do it should have no bearing on his intent.
"Specifically, the college student is accused of modifying for personal financial gain technology affecting control or access to a copyrighted work, according to an ICE statement."(Emphasis added by me)
Actually, it seems to me like they were going after the kid for making and selling the modifications. If he had just been merely "tinkering with a console" they would have never gotten involved - the key point being the "for personal financial gain" part. Same reason people are not arrested for having or playing a bootleg copy of a DVD. Now if you started selling them on the street for a profit, that is a much different story.
Can I ask how the Terrorism Task Force is to know it is a dumb 20 year old kid and not Al Queda if they don't investigate the case? Can I also ask you why you don't think interfering with a public transit system in a large city is something that a Terrorism Task Force should look into? You honestly can't see the potential?? Just think if it wasn't some dumb 20 year old that had no idea how to speak the proper jargon - the results may have been much different. Sorry, but telling a train to not wait the amount of time it is supposed at a light goes way beyond a "prank". I don't like law enforcement putting their noses into every little thing, but in this case I would say their actions were warranted.
Sorry, but applying a label to someone does not affect their sentence. A "hacker" is going to get the same sentence as "some guy who stole a radio and used it illegally". If you could point out which statue automatically gives stiffer sentences to "hackers" I would love for you to point it out to the rest of us.
So if I meet someone and they tell me their name, and I ask about their ethnic background, that makes me a racist? Boy am I glad I don't live in the same messed up world you do.
Well, if you really want to get technical, "I hate Hispanics" would be more along the lines of bigotry, not racism. If he would have followed up with "because Hispanics are inferior to Caucasians" then you would have a textbook racist statement. However, a stereotypical statement with the inference that one ethnic group is inferior to another could still be considered racism.
Because people who dedicate themselves to the service of others, the improvement of their community, and betterment of society are stupid fascist pigs, and should be treated as such.
No, those are the good cops and deserve to be treated with as much respect as they treat the public with. However, not all cops are good ones. It would be pretty naive to think that there aren't at least a small percentage of stupid fascists who are also cops. It would also be naive to think ALL cops fit into this category. Right common sense?
Asking a question about the ethnicity of a name does not automatically make one a racist. If he would have followed up with "because Hispanics are known for stealing" then that would be a racist statement. Simply inquiring about someone's name is not racist in and amongst itself.
I read that some cities were talking about getting a grid of "smart meters" that you could go online and check availability, and also reserve certain spots at certain times. The ones that will text your cell phone when your time is almost up, and allow you to add more time over the phone is a nice feature as well.
"For more than a century now, scientists have known that whenever a people take up Western habits of eating, the so-called Western diseases follow. The best-known examples include obesity, diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, and cancer, but the list also includes appendicitis, diverticulitis, tooth decay, varicose veins, ulcers, and hemorrhoids. All of these diseases are extremely rare in populations that still eat as their ancestors did for centuries."
Probably because they are dying too early of other things like malaria, AIDS, tuberculosis, measles, tetanus, and respiratory infections to live long enough to get the above mentioned "decadence diseases". In some countries, being obese would be the ultimate status symbol. I would say that is more a reflection of medical standards and technology than eating habits in some cases.
And I forgot to say that you can look for exceptions to the rule all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that over 70% of the products sold in Wal-Mart are made in China. And the numbers keep going up over the years. That is over $20 bilion dollars that could have stayed right here in the USA.
Ok. You really seem to be confusing US based companies with US companies who manufacturer their products in the US
Yes, they drive Fords in Europe. They were also built in Europe. Ford has manufacturing plants in Belgium, France, Germany, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Turnkey, and the UK.
Windows may have been designed here, but the actual physical products are made in China. Again, MS isn't cranking out Windows CDs and manuals in Redmond. iPods are manufactured on contract to Inventec Appliances based in Taipai, Taiwan. iPods are physically assembled by Inventec (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. in Shanghai, China.
Cows and corn I will give you - food is still one of the rare commodities we still do some exporting with.
If you really believe that the US is an exporting powerhouse, think again. Around WWII, we were by far the leading exporting country in the world. We have moved to the #1 biggest importing country in the world.
So sure, continue if you want. You are 1 for 4 so far.
Anybody can string together a bunch of videos, and make things look bad via propanda
Yeah, it is called the network news. But seriously, the bias on the video I referenced is plainly obvious. That doesn't mean that you can't watch it without getting some information. Everything you watch on television is the same - you need to run it through your own set of filters and figure out what it means, not what it is telling you.
My beef with corporations like Wal-Mart isn't just about how the workers are treated. It is mostly about how the US doesn't make any products for export anymore where we used to be one of the leading exporters in the world. We have outsourced our manufacturing for gains in the short term - cheap prices on goods - but sacrificed much more in the long run. It is this factor that bothers me most about companies like Wal-Mart. If they sold higher quality, higher priced goods produced in the USA it may cost us a little more at the register, but we are helping our economy also.
I think the real problem is out of the 10 who go along with it for the PHB's money, a few of them actually don't see any problems either. Or at the very least don't see the potential for abuse they are creating.
No, I didn't forget to post anonymously. It is called humor, and most people of reasonable intelligence can figure that out for themselves.
Sorry, but in humor there is no such thing as forbidden subjects. Just because YOU don't find it funny does not mean that nobody else will. In the future, try to keep your ego in check. Your opinions are not universal or infallible.
P.S. Tell your little sister I may have accidentally left my wallet on her Hello Kitty sticker book last night and I need it back ASAP
See, I knew you couldn't resist. Bravo. You sure showed me.
And no, it isn't false because I actually believe you are on a high horse. The fact that you believe the same about me doesn't change my position. So if my pointing out you are on a high horse means that I am also on a high horse, it still doesn't change anything, or make my assertion false. You just can't seem to grasp the concept that your opinion is merely that, an opinion, and not some unquestionable truth. You truly feel that you are better than the "low life scum" that would stoop to the level of a "bank robber" and make a copy of a digital file. Have fun with that chip on your shoulder, I am sure it will get you very far in life.
P.S. Please let me know the software company your supposedly work for, so I can make sure I never buy any of their software.
P.P.S. That doesn't mean I won't download said software free of charge and without your permission though. LOL
Crushing someone's sweet hands possibly?

If that is true, you have the best pot and the worst LSD in the world.

Yes, and unfortunately the ratings are abysmal. We will be lucky if we don't get canceled mid-season.

Technology != panacea. Often it creates as many problems (if not more) than it solves.
It is like Homer Simpson once said - "Ah alcohol. The solution to and cause of all our problems."
You should really check this movie out - Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices
"Legality is almost irrelevant when the capability and desire is widespread."
Which is exactly how I tried to explain it to her parents, but they still think 13 is too young to go on overnight "dates".
Duh, because it gets you there faster.
