  1. MS & Open Source fit well on Former MS Employees Explore OSS · · Score: 1

It's a good thing that stakeholders of MS and open source are finding how they can coexist. In addition to site like Ohloh.net and CodePlex, there are more emerging open source applications for the .NET platform. To avoid IP issues, a BSD license may be preferred by the MS crowd, and is featured in applications such as DotNetNuke and ListRing. The idea that it is MS versus open source as a whole is simply not valid as more for-profit organizations get into the mix. It is simply a matter of finding which approaches to open source fit best.

  2. Importance of staying focused on Dropping Linux Helped Restore Corel Profitability · · Score: 2, Insightful

This is a great example of how corporations do better when they stay focused on their core strengths. There are many reasons why Adobe does so well vs. Corel, the primary one being quality. Adobe builds great products because they are focused. Adobe never tried getting into the OS business; it is completely unrelated to their area of expertise. A viable business cannot be everything to everybody and should be very careful when expanding their product line. My company builds collaboration software. That's it, nothing else. It will be a long time before we think of building anything else.

  3. FOSS does what you want it to on Open Source Could Learn from Capitalism · · Score: 2, Interesting

I believe that FOSS can serve many purposes. It seems that any stakeholder can spin the purpose of Open Source to their needs and proclaim that all other methods need not apply. The truth is that capitalists and idealists can all take part. One big variable people keep forgetting about is what license you use. We released our software ListRing http://listring.com/ under the BSD license simply because we want as many people as possible to try this new way of sharing information. We think it is innovative, others may disagree, but anyone who wants can get it with the code. At some future date we will provide added Enterprise features based on what our customers are willing to pay for.

  4. sounds like intelligent design on String Theory a Disaster for Physics? · · Score: 1

Based on the article it sounds like string theory is just like intelligent design; based on ideas without any concrete scientific evidence. I think the author is being a bit inflexible. It is probably the case the string theory needs further revision and examination before it is fully realized, at which point it will probably be a very different view of the universe. There was a time when it was thought that the atom was the smallest particle, which we now know to not be the case, but this was a good starting point for current quantum theory. String theory is just the beginning...

  5. Re:Hmm on Jakob Nielsen on Design, RSS, Email, and Blogs · · Score: 1

I disagree with the idea of pigeonholing RSS as just news feeds. RSS is much more useful, for example as a great way to share collaborative information. One good application of this is ListRing (http://listring.com/). This software lets users syndicate their knowledge in various formats, allowing peers to collaborate with structured data. RSS is the perfect XML format for the simple sharing of data between not just people, but also applications. I believe more and more data intensive implementations of RSS will be forthcoming.

  6. MS *and* open source on Google is Microsoft's New Open Source · · Score: 2, Informative

Anytime I hear people talk about MS and open source, they speak of it as one vs the other, when in fact there is a lot of good open source written for MS platforms. Two of my favorites (both are BSD licensed) are:
