Ahh the latest trend in online debate - accusing people that disagree with you of being paid shills. As though your ideas and beliefs are so righteous and pure that only the corrupt could ever disagree with them!
Naturally, it all depends on what you do for a living. That's why I find the calls for more regulation and unionization troubling. Some people need to be available, and hell, some want to be available. It all depends and there needs to be exceptions when talking about this stuff.
Right. It's a calculated risk, but I don't believe its worth it. The best case scenario (if there is a lawsuit), Microsoft settles for a few million, the feature is removed, and nothing else is accomplished. I really don't believe this is a good way to get good press. Even if it is spun right, it paints MS as a victim - you feel sorry for victims but you don't really respect them, so its actually unbecoming of a company of their stature to desire that kind of attention.
Google has been known to develop bedrock apps for new platforms. I don't believe their reluctance to develop apps for Windows is entirely because of its current lack of substantial market share. Rather, its the belief that they will not succeed at all, and their strong desire that it fail. If the corporate culture there is anything like it is here on Slashdot, Windows may never see an official app for YouTube. It's an opportunity for developers to finally stick it to Microsoft, not really be hurt by it, and make a statement.
Even if Microsoft were at parity with say, Apple, Google would not be hurt by snubbing the platform. It's making a statement first and foremost. And ultimately, I don't think it really hurts Microsoft either - YouTube works just fine from the browser. What will hurt MS more is what its doing now, which is fostering more bad blood between companies that could both benifit from working together.
I wonder if this will become a humorous on-going issue like it was with WebOS and iTunes. I suppose it depends on how far Google is willing to go to keep YouTube API closed off from Windows Phone users. A change here, and updated app chasing it... Perhaps concluding in a long drawn out lawsuit?
I know it can't be helpful for establishing goodwill between the companies. MS may be able to get away with it, but if they hadn't tickled the dragon's tail, maybe we'd eventually see some more genuine Google apps on the platform.
That doesn't stop them from giving a mic to Cornel West. Fox likes left wing people. They bring them on for contrast, and they like them especially if they are waaay out there. As a result, the viewer will be more inclined to think the "conservatives" of Fox News are normal and relate-able, while all the liberals are nutty (or wimpy, like Colmes). Afterwards they can claim to be "fair and balanced".
Man, I am disappointed. I sure hope Microsoft, in their mad rush to undo the damage they perceive, doesn't ruin the touch experience on the touch screen computers out there already.
Look at how dim that screen is. I wouldn't be surprised that they don't break though because they're terrible. Mom bought a cheap Chinese tablet from one of these guys and it was next to useless even with an add on keyboard and touchpad.
I've learned to get used to typing the name of the program I want after hitting Start. At work I use W7, where the new habit continues to work flawlessly.
The Start screen itself is only useful on my Surface Pro tablet.... unfortunately the lack of apps forces me to use the desktop about as much I would if it were just an old fashioned convertible computer running W7.
I had planned to buy a WP8 phone, but T-Mobile took down their HTC 8X and pretty much everything except a Nokia refurbished model. That sent me a message. So I ordered a Nexus 4 instead. It should be arriving soon. In the near future I may also sell my Surface Pro... W8 is going no where, and my desktop will run whatever OS Autodesk fully supports. If one day that's Ubuntu, Fedora, or Mint, so be it.
Apple has an interesting opportunity here. They can renounce their ways and embrace the professional users, pulling the rug up from under Microsoft and becoming the only game in town as WinTel hardware components dwindle to nothing. Then we will live in a true nightmare.
We all fall short of our I guess. From a collective down to the individual, the ideal doesn't exist. The only metric worth considering might be to what degree you're being victimized by whatever ideology is popular at the time (government, economic, or otherwise).
You have to admit, sometimes we have a use for nasty weapons. And who's to say it won't be "set on stun" most of the time? If its good enough for the peace loving utopia of Star Trek, its good enough for us.
There's some merit to it though. I think I know the angle you're coming from (libertarian perhaps?), but I can with certainty say that Apollo navigation computer was worth building! And that there is a benefit to government tech pushes like that in that their demand for new technology can reduce the price of said tech so that the commercial industries will feel better about picking them up (in this case, ICs).
Mount it in your car and let them try to cite you for that. Mine is a cupholder mount (located low in the center console), its the perfect location for a GPS and no one can see it from the street. To the outside observer, it might as well be a radio - which sometimes it is. Cops will have to go to greater lengths to get you for that, and if they are going to try, make them work for it.
I am unable to. This was told to me by someone else, and I accepted it as fact without merit or inquiry. To my credit though, there are some vague notions in that direction in our history texts about the value of the moon program.
This thread is a meme in of itself.

This only works if you're a bending unit.

See also: With Liberty and Justice for Some by Glenn Greenwald. I'm still reading it. It's depressing.
Even if Mr. Shutdown were somehow unethical for working for Microsoft... who says you can't have fun being evil?
And it costs more to print one than to just buy a cheap one off the street.

That car switching prank sounds awesome.

This is the desired reaction. As soon as we fire all the right people the pain will stop. The longer we resist, the more it will hurt.

Some of the technology you used to post what you did was developed as a direct result of the moon program.
Agreed. If we can't maintain our weather sat coverage we shouldn't even be talking about this stuff.
The good news is that we all die in a few short years.
I bet big companies get special deals with Apple because they lend legitimacy to the App Store.
