Obviously the power of the signal is pretty high, but something flying close overhead could possibly cause a signal like that on equipment calibrated to be observing radio frequencies at trillionths of a watt. I am sure there is not a linear correlation to the sensitivity of the equipment to varying power observations.

To test my hypothesis, I would figure out what frequency or frequencies were observed at the time, and compare them with know earth based frequency usage. If one happens to be an aircraft or satellite radar, you have your answer.

I have used an iPhone, and while it was nice looking, try typing a word with a "p" in it. yeah, you hit the letter "o" instead. I can ssh my webserver from my phone using midpssh as well, which is a pretty big plus for me.

I wasnt trying to get into a features pissing match, I was just stating that the hype surrounding the $500 iPhone is a *little* unwarranted. My next phone is probably going to be an OpenMoko phone.

If you can believe this, I did not own a cellphone until about a month ago. I managed to avoid it all together, so I could have gotten an iPhone. I thought about it and did some research, but went with the k790 instead because of feature set and price, and I am extremely happy with it.

I just purchased an unlocked sony erricson k790a, and I couldnt be happier. and it was $200 cheaper than the iphone, and does all the same stuff and more. The only thing driving the iPhone is hype and wifi. Why, I ask, do you need wifi, when you have an unlimited data plan. You cant use voip on the iPhone, so really, what is the point? Another thing driving the crappy phone usage is that there are plenty of old people who "just want a phone" and that is all. It has been mentioned before, but really, that is atleast part of the issue. that and the size of the US.

I guess my point is that the US has a LOT of crappy options for phones, but because of the internet, we need not worry about those issues. Anyone can go on ebay or amazon.com and buy an unlocked phone if they care enough. Sure, our carriers are charging too much for outdated infrastructure, but what else is new.

This idea may seem great on paper, but in order to buy an exploit, a person would have to provide payment, which is the fatal flaw. Like shooting fish in a barrel. something tells me this exploit auction system may work ok if companies purchase it, but i dont think underground exploit buyers are going to surface to harvest exploits from this website..

Unless you are suggesting that he plan to teach high school students courses digital logic & computer archtecture *and* enough of a HDL to implement a processor *and* the rudiments of assembly language that the guy wanted to teach in the first place, what good is your suggestion? I expected someone would mention this after I posted. You don't need to implement a processor at all. That is way beyond what I was thinking. Instead, use the HDL to develop simple and, or, and not gates, and show them how to build a simple 2 bit calculator using the leds as output, and buttons and switches as input, by stacking up the gates that they built. You still get to throw the classic debounce problem in for the buttons and switches. If nothing else, help these kids realize what kind of power they have with these new tools and a dynamically reconfigurable chip. My purpose in posting about FPGA's really was just to mention something that may not have been considered otherwise. As a side note, Xilinx licenses an hdl microproccesor, called the microblaze, which can be programmed in c with some Xilinx libraries. Im not sure how much it costs for a license, probably not cheap, but it is an option for use as a micro-controller.

  19. fpga's anyone? on What Micro-Controller Would You Use to Teach With? · · Score: 1

An FPGA would be a great way to get people started with embedded systems. Something like the Spartan 3 starter board would be a good sub-$100 system to start with. Rather than have to piece together a working circuit, have them program one in one of the Hardware Description Languages. I'll be the first to admit that it is not easy, but it is a great way to learn about how various components can come together to make a useful device. and with the Spartan 3 board, you get a svga controller, a few buttons and switches, and a ps2 port for mouse or keyboard. Xilinx has a free software system you can download to develop HDL systems and apply the systems to the FPGA. The future of computer science and EE, in my opinion, will put more and more emphasis on FPGA's as a very high speed platform for development of hardware embedded systems.

my main beef with MD in the past is that due to DRM concerns, there was no way to digitally transfer audio that was recorded. you have to use the analog out and record in real time to another device or computer. for those of us who record lots of audio, it is a real pain to have to tie up your computer for 2+ hours to transfer the content from 1 MD. they have optical in which is great, but no optical out. i don't care if they have to flag the digital output stream on copyrighted works..just let us copy the audio digitally that we created. ill probably get flamed for the digital out statement, but there really are no 1st gen MD recorders that have digital out.
