Once the jvm is ported to the ps3 or other systems it's not really a stretch. In fact, many developers would love to write console games in java. Remember, the GPU is doing most of the work. The fact that java is slower than C/C++ doesn't mean anything because that's not where the bottleneck is. It's at the GPU. I really hope the JVM comes standard in the next gen consoles. Game development time to market would improve greatly. It would also encourage more small-time gaming companies to produce games.

The important thing to remember is that no company is loyal to you. No manager is going to lose his job to save yours. As soon as the company determines it is more profitable to release you, they will. If they don't, they won't be in business very long. You aren't a 'team member' or part of the '[corporate name] family'. Their goal is to make you feel this way so that you will work more for less. The truth is that you provide a service for a fee. If the company you work for requires more service, it is your job to make them aware that your fee will increase. If you feel you're unjustly being asked to work more for the same money, start looking for a new job immediately. If you feel you can do it without being fired, ask a manager if you can use them as a reference. Let them know in a not so subtle way, without actually saying it, that you're looking for other employment. You'll find out very quickly how much they value you.

Apparently the fine folks that make Parallels have a new version out such that you can run windows applications that appear to be running like a regular Apple app (i.e. you minimize the virtualization window). As virtualization becomes more and more powerful, I don't think worrying about which OS you're running will be that much of an issue. I can't speak for what most DBAs see in their daily life but as an application developer the only DB issues I see are related to disk hit. It really wouldn't make any appreciable difference if Unbreakable Linux was running in a miniature virtual machine while storing the information on a SAN.

In fact, the linux distro typically has multiple development platforms, multiple desktop environments, multiple database engines, and at least two office suites.
