It is a fuckup not because of nature but because of the way it was done (most of diverted water does not reach the fields it was diverted to irrigate) as well as deadly consequences the dust from dried bottom of what used to be Aral sea has on people living in the area. Nature itself is complex. That is why making the trade Aral sea for some cotton is not a good deal.
As has been pointed out elsewhere the major problem with current use of water that used to flow into Aral sea is the way it is distributed with very little being actually used. This and on top of it the rivers and the sea belong to different countries of which none has efficient government (worth noting that efficient is not the same as democratic and even this not what we usually get).
There are successful operations of this kind. The one I linked lives from subscriptions for the magazine they print (they have many on different groups of products and services). The reviews are also available online and you can get them if you pay for it. I use it before buying the stuff that is expensive and one uses it for longer period of time. They do not do ads and the reviews are made by professionals. As far as I can tell there are only few groups of products they do not review: cars, sex services and I have not seen reviews of restaurant or wine there. The reviews are not always very accurate but they try hard and if one wants one can change weights assigned to particular aspects of service or product. They also describe the way they tested the products. So it does work and works relatively well. It is not for profit organization which may be a proof that not all aspects of our lives need to be commercialized. Still they operate in a market economy and generate revenue to cover their costs. I guess not something stupidified society obsessed with stardom would appreciate (this is not a shot in any direction - all societies seem to go this direction) but it still operates.

Sometimes when I am in a good mood I like to challenge evangelists and gurus that come over to our company and ask them simple questions like: how is our scrum of scrum (or even simple one) going to make decisions if a simple moderation of a meeting is usually out of the question because it is not 'whatever current fad is called'. Sometimes it is even more entertaining to sit tight and watch them mismanage their own presentations.

and what is wrong with this approach? I have worked with different software systems that evolved or replaced others. Each way has its problems and I have seen some systems successfully virtualized before the word virtual got into common usage in this context. This way we had ability to use old system and new gadgets. I dare say this way we could keep good quality, robustness and power of old system (good characteristics were because of good internal structure and care to keep it that way - something modern developers do not know and do not care about) and combine that with high speed new HW and modern administrative tools. Win-win. The same organization trying to develop much simpler and less powerful application took more time and produce bigger mess that we had experienced before. I am not saying this is true every time but it was true for me and this one product.

I think we had this thing some time ago - they called that re-education camps. They were usually organized in far off places where you had time to think about your behaviour while building better life for general society. What do you think? Or even better all people that wore suits before now have to wear steel chastity belts. If these things were ever wearable I am not sure but let us try - this is as arbitrary as anything else so why not? So how happy are you about that then? Or why should we stop at clothing. Well said - I think you hit the spot with 'arbitrary burdens' here. I cannot stand the BS I have to endure every day anyway and wearing a suit to work is just one more on top of already big pile so I regularly refuse to do that. This has caused problems in number of companies albeit strangely not from official style police but from colleagues that hated the free wheeling arse like me with a beard till his belly, sporting shorts, t-shirt, sandals (with socks) all year long except if it is really freezing.
I calmed down a bit and trim my beard twice a month now because I understand some of my coworkers are sensitive to the sight of savages like me. I also stopped wearing shorts all year long because with age I became sensitive to low temperatures. I thought about wearing a more regular clothing to work but then I did not see the point in it because I hardly meet customers and if I do then they are insensitive to this sort of thing.

I suppose there are many takes on this from the whole domain of Orwell work: WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH is fitting quite nicely but really appropriate is the explanation of the reason why power is sought for - the reason why a party seeks power is power itself. The interesting is something else - history but also common sense tells us that if state is allowed to exist for long enough its success will turn efficiency into efficiency to subdue its subjects. The resulting oppression is unavoidable but can be made quite comfortable for majority. With technological progress it may be that the well off majority is not majority no more, but the not so well off can still be contained with use of well applied force or tranquilizers.
This is not the point you are trying to make but maybe it is, not sure here: most of the cohders I know and have known over the years (this is now more than quarter of century) have no f. clue about construction of robust and reliable software systems and structures. In fact those that do are a few and far between. The difference between those that do and those that do not have a clue is striking and does not involve speed of coding but rather speed of development - in case of really good guys you still have to refactor but there is visible sense in it and you do not have the feeling you got yourself dirty when you are done with it.
