    Let's be clear: Corporations are the aggregation of capital. Unions are the aggregation of labor. If you think one is a good thing, you have to accept the other as necessary.

    In fact, as that famous socialist Abraham Lincoln said, "Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration."

  5. Slashdot has missed the two biggest stories in tech this week, both of which happen to be feelgood stories.

    1) Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) liked an incest-porn video with his Twitter account.

    2) Martin Shkreli had his $5 million bail revoked and was put in jail for shitposting. He sent out a message on Facebook offering $5000 if someone would snip a lock of Hillary Clinton's hair. The judge deemed Shkreli a "menace to society". He will sit in jail while awaiting the appeal of his conviction for securities fraud.

    i think it depends on what you mean. "falling for it" in the sense that some guy is making money off it? sure, in that case i fell for it.

    if you mean actually believing that hillary was on her deathbed or that bernie was really an alien, no, never fell for that. sure shared it to laugh at it however

    You "fell for it" in both senses, because you amplified the message. Whether or not you believe the message was true, or whether you laughed at it simply does not matter. By amplifying the message, you you are like an asymptomatic carrier of a disease. You may not get sick from it, but many of the people who you inadvertently (or not) infected with the message by sharing it will get sick.

    Not everyone has your keen intellect ganjadude. Many will take the fake stories you shared at face value.

    Exactly. Banning will only encourage people to put down their keyboards and pick up a gun.

    Since people who "pick up a gun" are more likely to kill themselves or family members than anyone else, I don't really see the problem.

    California has the most abused disability system in the continental US and still owes the federal unemployment trust fund a metric buttload of money they haven't paid back, resulting in employers paying way higher federal unemployment tax for their operations in that state - the only state still with a deficit. The lack of accountability in CA with government spending is absolutely staggering and it drives up costs for employers and employees alike.

    Yes, this is a horrible place. Promise me you won't come here. Nobody should come here. kthx.

    No. The debt-to-GDP ratio is about 8.9%. That's pretty damn good. And with the now-balanced budget, it should go even lower.

    Yes, California is a high tax state, but you get a lot for your money. I just moved here and so far, it seems like a great bargain, especially after Texas (which is called a "low-tax" state, but has ridiculous property taxes and fees to make up for the lack of state income tax). And California is in the top 10 of states re: per capital income, so it really doesn't seem more expensive to live here.

    When I walk outside my house in California, I'm in California. When I walked outside my house in Texas, I was in fucking Texas. You can't put a price tag on being in a beautiful place with lovely weather.

    Yes, my friend, if you share these stories, you have fallen for them. That's the whole point of their existence - to be shared. Just because you do it, "for the lulz" doesn't mean you have somehow risen above their intended effect.

  13. If "early stage research and development" of something costs $50M plus a few zeroes, then that "something" must be either warp drive research or the cure for death. I don't think this is it.

    The F-35 "fighter" jet program will cost $1.1 trillion, and doesn't include a warp drive or immortality.

    No, they need to be made an example of by two guys with a blowtorch and power tools. They need to be treated like a black man at a traffic stop.

    I'm telling you, there's two ways to do this: 1) You take a few of these crooked CEOs and let Texas execute them (they enjoy that sort of thing down there), or 2) If you don't have the stomach for that, you confiscate all the companies stock. Then you let the former shareholders loose with a blowtorch and power tools. You do this once or twice and no CEO or board of directors will dare fuck around like this again.

    Then you watch how fast life becomes better for most people.

    Maybe I'm not looking at this the right way, but isn't the fact that a website is having anywhere from a 7% to 12% correlation with box office numbers kind of significant?

    As someone who moved to California just a week ago, I think it's pretty cool that we have pot delivery at all. I just found out that my local dispensary will bring the herb right to your door. I haven't got my medical card yet, because I'm shy about going to a doctor and trying to say I've got some medical condition that requires pot (since I don't, really), and I'm not sure I want to smoke any at all, because it makes me kind of goofy and lazy, but it's still cool. This is a pretty wonderful place. That's how California rolls.

    The assertion that Houston doesn't have zoning or has grown without planning is more legend than fact [rice.edu].

    If you read the article closely, you'll see that the "de facto zoning" laws that the article talks about only apply to the downtown business district, which saw little flooding and damage.
