It's really shame that the Macbook/Pros are limited to 2GB of RAM. More RAM has always been the best way to keep old systems usable over the years. At least the new ones accept a total of 3GB now.
Great to hear common sense was in action here. In Germany there was a ruling recently stating the exact opposit. The reasoning was something like if you don't have the resourses to monitor your message boards 100%, don't run one. Which should, if it playes out worst-case, eleminate most boards at some point. Next stop: cashing.
Agreed. Apple can/will be just as evil in exploiting this technology (DRM, ads etc.) but at least it will probably be a smooth user experience and thus beeing used by everyone. It's the double edged sword of using OS X. It's just so nice to work with it but it has this bitter aftertaste of a locked-in, closed platform.
Just to give an example how it can go not so well:
A few years ago I bought and burned over the course of a few months exactly two brands of CD-Rs. Only 2 years later I had to realize that all disks of one of the brands had become strongly discolored and i was only able to rescure about 50% of the data of each disk on average. The other brand was completly fine. And BTW, i stored brands cool, dry, in plastic casing and at the same place. This experince has really scared me off of using DVD+/-Rs for backup purposes. I use mirrored external HDDs now.
Yea, it really shouldn't hang like that. Unfortunatly it does and it doesn't matter in my case if i wait 1 minute or a few hours, it stays the way it is (I've tried) until i really need to access that network share again and have to do a cold reboot. I've have searched on Google mutiple times but to no avail. Am i really the only one with this problem? Any why will kill -9 not work? It gets stuck with an "exiting" status but it never does.
Thanks for any help here:)
About your point #2: Does anybody know a way to avoid a reboot to fix a lost share? When I for example copy a file and lose my network connection (not unusual with wlan) the copy process will just freeze and i can't connect to the network share again. Restartimg of Finder won't work and neither will a kill -9. Does anyone know a reliable way to kill Finder without having to do a cold start (which is just nasty) ?
Great comment, thank you. I hope you get moded up so more people get to read this. Depression as a social phenomenon still doesn't get nearly enough (media) exposure. The issue, although affecting many more people than most would care to admit, just doesn't have a prominent place yet in our performance driven society. I am optimistic though.
Now whoever came up with the term Web 2.0 in the first place? It is really a phrase with no specific meaning in the first place. I never even noticed there was a switch-over or a release of HTTP protocol v. 2. So it is really anyones own make up of a defintion for Web 2.0 (when is 2.1 getting released? can't wait) . One is as good as the other.
This might be new to you, but global warming doesn't mean warm beaches and sipping tequila sunrise everywhere. The issues involve much more complex processes of interacting climate and weather patterns. In fact, in a lot of places it will become colder instead of warmer. For example there are chances that the golfstream ends up collapsing due changes of underwater currents, it will get real chilly in europe. Global warming theory says that in the whole earths atomphere is warming up because of so called green house gases which keeps the warmth trapped in the earths atmosphere, slowing the rate at which the warmth is beeing given off into space. Much like a green house as the name says. This in theory can lead to lot of trouble, even a new ice-age in parts of the world. If this were simple, there weren't so many contradicting studies.
I am sure wikipedia or google will point you to more detailed information if interested.
Yes, the pictures are really not well done. I think that of lot of shoots in highgloss magazines though. Usually they istroy the girls natural aura instead of fostering it in their pictures.
Exactly, just like a stolen BMW is still a genuine BMW and nothing can change that. I could even remove the BMW emblem and hammer out the serial number from the motor block. It will still be a genuine BMW. And a pirated/stolen copy of Windows is nothing else.
I havn'ttried this myslef, but: http://www.dualbootguru.com/bc%20-%20booting%20ext ernal%20hdd.shtml
Only bummer is that you have to create a small NTFS partition on your internal drive. It seems like it is not necessary, but apperantly Windows won't create a pagingfile on an external drive.
I am probably a typical switcher and I am not looking back. I admit, I only bought a mac since it is an Intel machine and i _could_ install Windows (my primary platform) on it if i wanted to. And I am sure I am not the nly one going this route. So i gave OS X a chance and it's probably one of the most polished OSs out there. The BSD core even satisfies the geek in me while the GUI is just tight. I have tried switching comepletly to a linux desktop but i have just not found myself to be productive in it. Too many little quirks to work out to get everything working, which just costs: time. So for now and the near future, count me in in the Apple camp. Hope i don't sound too fanboyish;)
What else is this but a Government sanctioned monopoly ?
Patents seem to mainly not be used anymore to give an incentive for beeing innovate but to effectivly stifle competition. What better way to get rid of any potential compettitor is there than to patent a business model? Too bad it's too late to patent "filling a hot, brown liquid (coffe, hot chocolate) in a paper cup" (starbucks would never exist, what a shame) or "sticking a fat dripping piece of pretend-meat between two buns". Otherwise I wouldn't have to waste my time posting on/. and could just chill on some nice sunny island sipping a caiphi right now.

Yes TorrenBox is also run by them. At least that is what isoHunt used to say on their site.
This is a tad OT but i thought I'd mention that for some reason the iPhone is available for pre-order at Amazon in Germany. It's 999 for the 8Gb model and already tops Amazon's top 10 sellers list. http://www.amazon.de/gp/bestsellers/ce-de/ref=pd_t s_c_th_head/028-5061788-4808524

Tough luck since it doesn't run Windows.

I'd say you are correct. In this case i am just wondering who has to gain or loose what beeing on either side.

One of the better trollposts I have seen in a while :) Keep it up!
I did exactly what you are planning to do. Except, I found real liking for OSX and use it exlusivly now. So Apple just won another user.

My bet is it will be top-down view 2D.
