  1. 2 comments on Politics and 'An Inconvenient Truth' · · Score: 2, Insightful

Two things I was thinking of while reading this:

    1. By passing on some free material, I wonder whether the teachers are trying to promote having a single 'correct' view on things, as opposed to showing multiple different views, to show both differences of opinion, as well as differences in research. This to me seems pretty dangerous, as it makes the assumption that one thing is definitely 'correct'.

    2. The author of the article's main problem seems to be that the movie isn't being accepted despite being OBVIOUSLY right. It's this attitude of smug correctness, even when from what I can tell global warming is not universally accepted even among scientists, which hurts their position.

  2. Sofke is an idiot on Slate Pans the Wii, Slate Loves the Wii · · Score: 4, Interesting
He has no idea how the Wii actually works. He treats it like a light gun, and of course it doesn't work, because that's not what it is. He brags about his 14 hour long Halo tournament, of course he's not going to adjust well to a new scheme, he's as ingrained in the old method as you can be. He gives the system about 10 seconds to impress him, and is disappointed.

Everyone I know who has used the remote has started off extremely dubious, but eventually been won over, and gotten used to it. It sounds like the Wii just didn't match up to what he wanted, instead of trying out what it was.

I really don't see how this is 'stumbling over their own arrogance', when most of these problems are true for all game console manufacturers.

"Enforced bundles so they can hike prices in certain areas: Hint at nintendo, an enforced Wii sports bundle does not help sales, it would have been better to sell the console for 200 and let the people decide which game to buy, in the end you will lose money on that decision."

I'm pretty sure they've stated that the price would be 250 regardless. They just packed the game in as an extra.

"Hidden costs: Hint at Nintendo: charging another 60 dollars for another controller set pushes you way over the XBOX360 pricewise. "

    This is just untrue.

ampmouse: "Remember that Science can only explain observable events."

Huuuuuuh? You're not a scientist, I hope. What do you think of the theoretical sciences? Many things we know about Space and Time we know without being able to OBSERVE them. Many things we know only because physics/mathematics tells us that it HAS TO BE SO. A good example would be the gravitational lensing of light as it passes massive objects on its way to earth.. That is exactly how we can detect the "black holes" and other super-massives out there, which, due to their very light-sucking nature*, cannot be observed.

That you actually made such a statement is almost as profound as the statement itself. Science explains a lot of things, past and present. I would hardly call the fossil formation of an ancient trilobyte an "observable event" yet, by various means of spectrometry and x-ray crystallography, etc, we can determine exactly how the fossil was formed, exactly how the mineral leaching occurred and replaced the organic substances with stone. Observable? No. Science? Yes.

I bolded the ways in which you're observing nature to retrieve data to confirm these theories. You just don't have a wide enough definition of 'observable'.

Actually, I would argue that his parodies live on much better than the originals usually do. Especially the two you mentioned, as the originals were very much fad pop songs. Usually how he works is, he has the straight parodies, which are, as you said, much more poppy and fad-ish. However, the originals that he writes are usually much more lasting, at least for me, in terms of both music and lyrics. I can see myself listening to 'Yoda' (I know this is a parody, but it's still a classic), 'Bob', 'Christmas at Ground Zero', etc, pretty much forever.

  6. Article Authors not very observant on How Nintendo Could Win It All · · Score: 1

If the writers of the article had actually paid attention to their sources, they would have seen that Sony's statement listed their 17 million as 'shipped', as always, and that Nintendo's statement listed their 16 million as 'sold', also as always. So, unless you go to the store and don't see any PSP's on the shelves, then the DS is almost definitely beating the PSP in sales.

It's a combination of factors, including lots and lots of easter eggs and hidden things you can do, a huge difficulty curve, and lots of luck. My main problem with it is that most of the cool stuff that you can do, you basically need to read on a faq; you won't learn it just by playing the game. I've spent a decent amount of time playing, but it's too frustrating and luck based for me to actually spend enough time to ascend.

  8. An overlooked feature on Treasures or Trash, 5 PC Cases for Gamers · · Score: 1

My case has a few of the things people hate, including some unnecessary LED's, a windowed site, etc. However, it was the only case I could find locally that had the feature I wanted the most, which was a handle on top. Since I'm still in college, and move around a lot, I got tired of lugging the thing around without one.

While I can completely understand your poing of view, me having spent 3 years at Ma Tech as a CS major, I think you were a little premature with your decision. Their curriculum pretty much assumes that you have no programming experience, so not only do they have to teach a lot of basic tools and skills, but also some basic mindsets about writing code. It's not something a lot of people can just jump into. I agree, my first year, the first two cs classes were really dull and didn't feel like they went anywhere.

However, I really needed that year to acclimate myself, because after that, the pace of the schooling, and the scope of the classes, really jumped. Having those first classes as a grounding point really is important, because it's a jumping off point for lots and lots of other material.

The CS department there is also really good about studying other disciplines - it has the most free electives among any other major on campus, so they can be more well rounded and make their own degree.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't have left, if you really enjoy your new college, but if you came in with that much cs experience, you might have wanted to test out of the intro stuff, and skip right to the meatier classes.

I think it's more a case of, people don't really know what to expect. So far, Reggie's just done a lot of marketing, so we don't know what kind of new decisions he would make as president. And if you think that Nintendo is irrelevant as a business, then you must not pay attention to the news, or know what makes a business relevant.
