Ask yourself: if someone got a copy of all of your secrets, including your financial records and (lack of) sexual partners, maybe some stuff you'd rather bury for a century or two, and published it, would you be OK with that?

Privacy/Secrecy is only a problem when everyone else has it and you dont; In an egalatarian society there is no problem with such things.

Its really hard for me (as an outsider) to understand how people can get locked up for 2 months just for being accused of something, and how a modern society can consider such a legal system acceptable.

NVIDIA want to use actual code from the Linux kernel, they arent proposing to write their own DMA-BUF code. If NVIDIA did want to write their own DMA-BUF code and the way the Linux Kernel has done it is the only way it can be done, then this ruling says its ok for NVIDIA to use the idea of that interface, not the code.
Or look at it another way, if you are correct in your interpretation and copyright doesnt apply to interfaces, then anyone can use any other library irrespective of licence. Such a hole in the GPL would not have gone unnoticed, their would be proprietary wrappers around all sorts of open source licences.

It might have helped had he bothered to defend himself, since he didn't the judge defaulted to the maximum penalty.

Qualcomm manufacture ARM chips, like a dozen other companies, there is nothing special about them.
AMD are doing real long term innovation with integrating CPU and GPU.
Qualcomm is licensing other peoples innovation and putting them near each other.

AMD have committed themselves to releasing technical specs for their product that make it much easier for the community to write open source drivers.
