Ive heard the argument before that uni teaches people how to teach themselves.
What a crock of shit that is....
When i was in high school i could learn, even when i was in primary school i could learn, come to think of it from the moment we are born we are capable of learning...
Have you ever met someone incapable of learning ?
Perhaps you mean. Uni gives you a solid grounding in fields related to the one your interested in, which in turn makes it easier to learn basic ideas in the field you are interested in.
University isnt about students learning, its just a factory that produces objects (graduates) that conform to a specific pattern (curiculum) as dictated by high level managment (governemnt).
University should be a place where people with common interest can congregate to learn from each other.
The only difference between a university and a trade school is the level of understanding (the depth) that the topics are covered.
You dont need to be smart to get a degree.
Most people go to uni to get the skills to work in an industry. and only ever use a small % of what they are taugh at uni in their job.
Therefore for most people university is a TOTAL WASTE OF TIME.
This article is really about the economics of rewritting software.
The fundamental difference between free software and commercial software is that free software is about the product, commercial software places a higher value on the profit than the product.
The classic engineering design method is to build something, break it, build it again break it again, etc etc.
Ive never heard of good engineering design comming from build it, break it, fix just the bit that failed, break it, fix just the bit that failed, etc
The whole program is one product, patches dont always fit in nicely with the overall program flow, thats when a program becomes ugly.
Ugly code is more costly to free software because it stops people wanting to get involved, if commercial software is ugly they just pay them more money or something, managment doesnt care how much programmers like readign the code, they just care that it works and its on time/budget
There is only so many usefull things you can do with rocks.
Engineers design things, once the design has matured a long way the only thing the engineer can do to improve the product is to integrate new technology into the product.
Give a tradesman the design and it can be reproduced eternally... dont need the engineer anymore.
When i first tried debian i also had great problems with dselect, it does have a steep learning curve. If you cant remember all the keys, its slows you down greatly to constatly refer to the help screen.
Once you get to know it its really good, there are probably 4 or 5 alternative GUI's about, but i still use dselect 90% of the time, sometimes even over apt-get (more info).
It took me 10 mintues or so of searching to find this page... im not sure wether these system requirements are actually for XP emebeded or simulating it under a normal XP (like a virtual machine)
If these system requirements are true then i think it just demonstrates there cluelessness.. they are considering a PC that was top of the line a few years ago to be an embedded system.
In my mind embeded systems are cut down computers like PDA's, 16MB ram, flash, no hdd etc, not desktop class machines.
I mean if microsoft sold mainframes they would probably have an embedded version of that
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/embedded/xp/eva lu ation/sysreqs/default.asp
System requirements
500MHz Processor
Minimum of 128 MB ram if using tools OR database, minimum 256MB ram if using both.
200MB disk space for tools, 2.5 GB disk space for database.
"A work of art is a work of man created to induce or display emotion."
I challenge you to find a dictionary that states this (all) that art is.
A definition of art from www.dictionary.com is
1. A system of principles and methods employed in the performance of a set of activities: the art of building.
2. A trade or craft that applies such a system of principles and methods: the art of the lexicographer.
So if your saying code is a craft then you are agreeing with me that it is also art.
"It's not for you to reject. Copyrights and Patents are explicit contracts between the government and the author. If you don't like it, it's up to you to come up with an alternative that authors like better."
If he doesnt have the power to reject it then what good would it do him to come up with an alternative.
What difference does it make if Authors like it better ?
Whats to stop him coming up with an alternative the PEOPLE like better, or just the GOVERNMENT like better.
You think authors need to approve laws that effect them ?
Rolling will always be more efficient than flying.
Better to only fly when there is a reason, it would be disasterous for the environment if society got to the stage of flying short distances rather than using more efficient travel means.
"The average joe that I talk to doesn't want their computer to be harder to use"
Your barking up the wrong tree here dude.
If people _really_ want computers that are easy to use why do you think mac is such a failure ?
Most people have only ever tried one OS, they have no idea how easy or difficult another system is.
People want to use a system that is FAMILIAR to them, difficulty is based on experience, its rediculous to say that the average user wants to be treated like an idiot and have the software second guess everything they do.
'Do you want to continue'
'You will have to reboot'
'Do you want to shutdown your system'
'Are you really sure'
'Say pretty please'
"So stop it with this idealistic shit and fight MS on its own terms."
What by becoming a convicted monopolist and then getting let of scott free ?
The average person in the street doesnt understand the politics involved with technology and so are not capable of understanding whats in their long term best interests.
Thats a great idea, i really enjoy contributing to the RIAA's lawyer fund.
Can anyone recommend a filesharing program for .ogg files ?
ogg files seem to be very rare in comparison to mp3
"This information is "free"."
If this information is free, how can we be stealing it ?
Its free as in beer, but its not free as in speech because you arent allowed to read it without their permission (i.e. registraiton).
none of these work

Slashdot supporting sites (by linking to them) that dont value freedom is just as bad as slashdot promoting non-free software.
Do you consider yourself to be hypocrites ?

"why don't HD companies use it to mean 2^20 instead of 10^6"
Because if Z = X * 10^6 = Y * 2^20; X > Y;
So some people are fooled into thinking they are getting more space.
They do it to try and increase sales, not support a standard
no i did.
Rather stupid of nist to introduce a new term an d changing the definition of the old one... why not introduce a new term and keep the old one.
"(MB) is a power of ten, while a mebibyte (MiB) is a power of two"
You got it backwards

/home/bug1/quake2/quake2/client/cl_ents.c:1156: undefined reference to `CL_BlasterTrail2
there are a couple of dozen of these lines, CL_BlasterTrail2 is defined in client.h which is included in this file, so it should give an error.
I guess im overlooking something
Anyone managed to compile it under linux yet ?
./linux/Makefile.i386 to ./linux/Makefile, changed MOUNT_DIR= and then ran make from that dir, doesnt compile.
I copied
Not including the right header files i think
If the xbox BIOS was replaced with LinuxBIOS then that shouldnt that bypass any other protection they put in software.
linuxBIOS project http://www.acl.lanl.gov/linuxbios/
You are absolutely INCORRECT.
You clearly lack NO knowledge of what the free software movement is about, or are just a troll.
Free software is much higher quality, and have more features than the average commercial software which is feature crippled compared to free software.
Commercial software is buggy as all crap "out of the box", you just dont find out about the bugs until you are a victim.
This article is really about the economics of rewritting software.

Science provides the tools that engineers use to build stuff.
Engineers would be useless without science to provide new raw materials.
Science would be pointless if raw knowledge wasnt moulded into something practical by an engineer.
