Not because the center-left party agreed with the policy (or even understood it), they supported it because they have a policy of supporting all right wing security policies.
They opposed a lot of other stuff and had to agree with the government on something so they were not labelled as obstructionist. A tactic that was used successfully against them when they where in government.
Agreeing with the right wing government blindly on all security was also seen as a good strategy for the left as they had earnt a reputation of being more tolerant than the right wing party, and that really wasnt popular with right wing voters, whom the center-left wing party want to win over so they could compete against the far-left minor party.
See, its really not their fault, they had no choice !
"the availability of computers provides "no noticeable improvement" to students' test scores"
I guess they didnt test their general computer skills... or "computer graphics", or ability to do their own research, or communicate with people they can see.
And they didnt exactly consider if computers help people learn, or consider they are a door to an almost infinite treasure of information.
So when testing students ability to do things that havent changed in 100 years, computers dont improve test grades even though they might help people learn and provide context to that they are learning about.
If "security" is just protecting against external threats, and she knew of internal threats, then a private email server makes sense for some types of email.
Lots in our community want to be able to purchases devices that have all the source code available. The FSF itself has championed 100% free OS's, and also tried to promote hardware devices that protect users freedom.
If there is binary blobs on a device then whoever controls the blobs has power over "good" developers and their users. The fewer binary blobs the more concentrated that power becomes, and therefore becomes harder to eliminate. This is becoming more of a problem as software gets distributed in an aggregated form (firmware, images) rather than as individual components.
The GPL says "mere aggregation" of copyleft software with binary blobs is ok, is it still ok ? Is it time for a new license that articulates the wishes of those who want 100% free software ?
They have spent money or research developing the HARDWARE. Hardware is useless without software.
Spending money on hardware and not software is like designing a car without an engine.
Open source drivers allows them to provide a better "user experience" on Linux platforms, but more importantly it enables "peer review" of the driver which helps to indentify bugs, promotes trust, and provides a better "user experience" on some platforms (ie Linux).
So yes we are talking about open source, and we are talkign about financial benefits to AMD.
Is it worth investing hundreds of thousands of dollars on software to support tens of billions of dollars of research and development in a hardware products evelotion. Why yes, yes it is.
If you dont understand the benefits of open source why are you even posting here ?
How about facebook just stop using flash and switch to html5 like youtube has. Or do i need to put my tinfoil hat on and speculate why certain influential groups might want a large proportion of the internet dependent on a binary only browser plugin. (yes yes in theory there is open source flash plugins, but nobody uses it because its mostly broken).
"This removes intelligence capabilities that have existed throughout the Cold War, and which may have helped to prevent a 'hot' nuclear war. Have the actions of Snowden, and, apparently, the use of weak encryption, made the world less safe?"

As part of AMD's QA process they first submit their driver and sample hardware to the FSF and debian for rigorous testing. Once approved it will be submitted to Linus for inclusion in the official kernel. Only when all parties are satisfied the product is stable and efficient and all 3 major OSS's will QA sign off on release of the product.
the issue got bipartisan support

Copyleft uses the power of copyright to subvert its common intent.
By giving copyright holders more powers, maybe we can now do more savage things to corporate violators, like send them jail.
Perhaps we need an anti-TPP software licence to take advange of this new power.
The harder they squeeze....
'Sky Muster', best name ever, only a child could think up such a creative and succinct name.
The US needs to wake up to the fact that it doesn't set policy for the world, and that other jurisdictions have their own laws and regulations
The US government happily violates its own constitution. Its expecting too much for any nation to have more respect for foreign laws than their own.
No reason not to use Linux.
Except that its un-American, and causes cancer...
AMD is like capitalism, its terrible, but not as terrible as the alternatives.
I like how you assume that dumping a bunch of assumptions on someone with no basis, logic, or suggestions will magically improve those things.

Great report old angry guy.
Proudly brought to you by the singularity, powered by cold fusion.

Hang on a second... BASH ?
You mean posixly correct shell surely !
AMD has much more to gain from good open source drivers than Intel does, and currently Intel is way ahead of any graphics hardware maker.

Thats the problem with bankers... Eventually you run out of other people's money to spend. Glad to see that statement keeps holding up every time.
Only if Rupert notices them.
Exactly, submitter is obviously biased.

Dont blame the messenger.
(And now i feel dirty for mentioning it)
Well there was this http://www.fsf.org/news/endors...
But i was being facetious, so ...

Oh wait, no, that isnt the plan at all.
Come on, of course 100% detection rate is possible! We don't know about any threats it doesn't detect!
But they also say they protect against the "unknown unknowns".
Claiming "100% protection against the unknown" really should get this company investigated for fraud.
The law was bought in to give them permission to do something they always did anyway, you think a politician can stop them now ?
Until one of them goes to Jail nothing will change.
