  1. Wii brings back the fun to gaming... on Where the Wii Fits In · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'm sure a vast majority of the crowd here wasn't around for the heydey of the arcade. I'm not talking about Street Fighter II era, I'm talking about the oldschool games that munched quarters like crazy like Frogger or the original Mario Bros (not Super). You didn't need to know 9 controller/button combos to play efficiently. You could simply walk up and play. The game-play got more difficult as you progressed but the basic principal was that anybody could play, and it didn't take a lot of frustration trying to learn. Fast forward to now. I'm not a Nintendo fanboy by any means, but I do know when I'm having fun. Fun is a relative word, and for some people having fun is memorizing the zillions of button combinations & intense story-line required to play some games on other systems. For the rest of us that just want to pick up a game and simply enjoy it the Wii has amazing allure, and will continue to grow in its fan-base. No wonder people over 30 are buying it in droves...they're of the few that remember the simple (but fun) days of the arcade.

It's called a coffeemaker. With an automatic timer, it's better than any barista could ever hope to be. Want proof? Try ordering a latte in your underpants tomorrow morning. Extra points for getting coffee without the underpants. Double bonus for assless chaps.

  3. golden hammers.... on Design Software Weakens Classic Drawing Skills · · Score: 1

I'm currently a designer at Portland State University, in a town that is home to a bulging assortment high profile companies to work for; Nike, Gard & Gerber, Wieden & Kennedy, REI, Columbia Sportswear, etc. The number of graphic design majors has been rising steadily over the years, to the point where every class is packed. The old fogies at the university continue to harass n00bs about the necessity for traditional skills and how losing them will somehow make you less of a designer. I'd say it has more to do with the individual than anything else. A good 7/10's of each class has students that produce utter garbage, using all the latest toys and tools, even after years of traditional media classes. Out of every graduating class of design students, only a fraction willprobably ever get to do real design work. If you have a solid gold hammer you can pound nails, but it's still just pounding nails. It's the idea that counts. If you're doing design, you can succeed with a stick in the dirt, just as easily as with a computer. -Art Chantry
