"One cannot expect Yahoo! to turn away from such a lucrative market any more than one can expect a scorpion not to sting. It's what they do."
You can't compare the instinct of an animal with a business. A business is made up of human beings making decisions. We have reasoning abilities beyond instinct and at some point any decision in a business is a conscious, human decision. We should and do set higher standards for humans than we do for animals.
  2. When is a thinkpad not a thinkpad? on Lenovo & Customer Perception · · Score: 0

When it's not an IBM thinkpad. I've been looking for a laptop and have always liked the thinkpads. It's not because of any features, design or styling. There is just something about a thinkpad which makes you think quality. This was almost completely down to the IBM brand and a reputation for that quality. Even though the laptops were made be Lenovo before the sale of the business, both the brand and the reputation have somehow disappeared.

It's the intangibles that make the difference and they cannot be built in or added as an option.

Sounds like his lawyer is just trying to get the public and politicians on his side before the trial. There are only vague references in the article that he could be possibly, maybe sent to Guantanamo. If the US authorities have given their word in public in a foreign country that he will not be sent there, I think it would be a PR disaster to go back on it.

  5. Outsiders Looking In on Software Engineers Ranked Best Job in America · · Score: 1, Interesting

Isn't this a case of people outside the industry looking in and seeing only the 'ideal' that a job/career represents without seeing it in its entirety? Any job can provide enjoyment, satisfaction and fulfillment to a particular group of people but if you're not the right kind of person then that job is never going to reach that ideal.

Our accounts runs on Sage Line 50. Our business banking has windows only clients (2 seperate programs). We have an old bespoke export documentation package which uses Lotus approach of all things. Of course we could re-write it in something else but where's the benefit? There are numerous small programs and utilities which, although users could do without them, why should they? For new businesses, Linux on most of the desktops is possibility. For existing businesses, the hassles and costs far out-weigh the benefits.

  8. Windows - Necessary Evil? on Novell Still Runs Windows · · Score: 0, Troll

Is this proof that regardless how evangelic you are about linux, Windows is still a necessary evil in a commercial desktop environment? Switching to Open Office only gets you so far. After that your choices for replacement software become more and more limited. I think this is fairly obvious and although I'm a huge fan of Linux on servers, I still don't think it's ready for the mainstream desktop market regardless of the never-ending promises that "this is the year". My companies systems are all run on Linux (Debian) but I don't have ONE desktop which I could fully kick windows off.
