    I fail to see why, in absense of a 70 char (or otherwise absurdly long) URL, why it would be worth the effort and worth the obsfucation to use one.

    Interesting that this got tagged !redstormrising. I wouldn't have though about it without that tag, it's a relatively obscure reference to something that happened in the beginning of the book (terrorists blow up an oil refinery in Russia, sparking WWIII). It is a pretty decent book though, unlike all of the later drivel that author pushed out.

    This is one thing that every citizen old enough to be called into jury duty should know about. Cases with laws this unjust should never get past a jury.

    LIttle nitpick, outside the context of observation from earth, the moon and mars don't have a "dark side" anymore than the earth has a dark side. The so called dark side (or rather, far side, unless you're a Pink Floyd fan ;)) of the moon is actually bathed in sunlight half of the time. It's sufficent to just call it "night".

    Uhm, I was a liveguard during the summer for several years, just 2 or 3 years ago... Most kids I knew worked as baggers at grocery stores or whatnot, it's really not hard at all for kids to find summer jobs.

    Same here, that Sierpinki triangle was actually the first program I ever wrote (well ok, transcribed). The TI-83+ is a great place to start in my opinion. It's rather simple but it's very easy to see how it's relevant to real life.

    From the 83+ I moved on to the 89, which I learned how to program in C, which lead me into the great big world of modern programming :)

    By "upgrade" did you mean "buy a new machine"? Single mothers like my aunt can't afford that so easily.

    One of my old CS professors responded to a comment like this from a student by quoting Brian Kernighan, who said in response to a question "why would anyone use awk now that we have perl?" something to the effect of "You should use Perl if Perl is the right tool for the job, and you should use Awk if Awk is the right tool for the job."[paraphrased]

    Oftentimes Awk is the right tool for the job. Othertimes Perl's heavier feature set is needed. Both are of value.

    Yeah, I use Kopete .70.90 (KDE 4.3.0 version) for exactly the same reason. It works alright now and it's integration with KDE 4.x has gotten much better, but there is still the occasional annoying bug.

    If you really believe that in-game advertisements subsidize the cost of games then you really are ignorant.

    PNG is lossless but compressed, whereas JPG is lossy and compressed. Apparently these devices arn't already using RAW, PSD, or DNG but rather opting for JPG. If you're going to use a more "common" format like that, it should at least be something that's not nearly so shitty.
