    As has been said, Quake is only relevant to the chips concerned in that it only tests the 32-bit compatability of the Opteron. I would have like to see some tests that demonstrated the advantage of 64-bit processors over 32-bit processors. Granted, the reviewers only wanted to show benchmearks that the populous was familar with and they were pressed for time. Let's give them a break for that.

    The point I didn't make before was this:
    That there is something fundamentally wrong with software companies telling people what they can and cannot do with their machines. I wonder when it was that MS went from being a distributer of software to being, well, a mafia-like organization. If you think about it, this is how a a mob works.

    And I do run Linux at home, I was just bitching for the public comsumption

    That, because we are running their software, this means that they own the computer it runs on. What else could the deal with the "registered programs" and such be about? I own the damn network card, so doesn't that mean I can choose how to use it? It's the same ownership/license debate.

    How do most people think that the heavier elements ended up in this system anyway? Think about it. You need a star of at least 8 solar masses to start the r-process, the rapid heavy-element formation process. There just isn't enough mass in the solar system to account for that. There must have been another close encounter billions of years ago that allowed a young star to "rip" enough material from an old supernova remnant /dense cloud to form the planets with the elements we have today.

    WTF? This guy could't say why Windows couldn't run without IE, let alone what the legal violations were. What the hell was Win95 if it wasn't Windows without IE? Do they seriously think that there is not another engine that can do what IE did for Win98, 2k, XP?

    Speaking as part of the community, the physics world is not at all portrayed accurately in this article. Nearly every physicist sees value in every subset of physics. Think nuclear physics is dead? I happen to know a few nuclear physicists who are still active in research. No-one I know refers to solid-staters as "squalid-staters". There is worthwhile research still in every discipline of physics, even solid state and particle physics.

    I think what we have here is a case of journalistic hype used to make the a mountain out of a molehill. I do not think that anyone can deny that there has not been advances in the understanding of any field.

    Ten-to-One against more than half surviving the reviving process, if we ever get there.

    But thats not the big problem. Do they really expect that anyone in the prime of their life will take part in this not knowing if they will live through it, or even ever be revived. Can you picture a bunch of elderly peoplewho have been revived trying to keep civilization in a post-apocalyptic world? Our world will end, not with a bang, but with geriatrics with walkers. Sad

  15. Let's try a new law: on Opt-in vs. Opt-out · · Score: 1

    As the subject reads, and here some guidelines I would like to see within this law:

    1) The default for any sign-up, whether electronic or hardcopy, is that the option is not to have their information distributed.
    2) The only information that can be cataloged would be names, addresses, emails and nothing else.
    3) Once it is specified that a person no longer wants to be on a certain mailing list, that person must be removed and never mailed again unless that person so requests.

    That is all I can think of. Feel free to add suggestions.

    What would have happened if the California power companies had said: "Well damn if we aren't out of money. Oh well, turn it off." In other words, the customers are screwed. Oh, I suppose the companies could charge the customers to get their files sent to them on CD so that the customers could upload them to whoever they sign up with next, but that is darn inconvienient.

    No, I'll continue to store my files on my own storage devices, thank you very much.

    If this guy was betting that his server could withstand the slashdot effect, he was wrong. Cool project though. His site had a good presentation of the project parameters and the problems they encountered. I immediately started thinking of possible solutions and improvements.

    1. Perhaps encase the rails in high-impedence ceramics to add rigidity and provide a method of heat-sinking.
    2. Create a 'magazine' and utilize a weaker rail system to pump the projectiles into the main rail chamber just before a cycle. The timing on this would be very difficult I admit.

    Oh well, I just might have to build my own now.

    If we provide for a capacity that will never be maxed out, i can guarantee that bandwidth use will only go up. More video, graphics, effects, etc will go into whatever the hell it is that poeple do on the internet. There will never be enough bandwidth.

    Regardless of who originated this (which shouldn't be hard to discover, the guys email address is in the program), the Linux community can do without this kind of publicity. I would rather have people use a non-Windows OS because they wanted something different, not because the one they use is too buggy and insecure. Although that is a good reason as well.

    For questions three and four, I can answer those right now. As you would be the writer of that thesis, you have copyright over that document. The university does have some control over research projects, etc. that go on at the university, but mainly if you can prove you did it on time not on the university's pay it is yours for the keeping.

    Would it be fair to say that 1-2 votes could have been lost in each district of Florida? If so, then with about 50-100 precincts per county (for a moderately populous area) and 67 counties in Florida, that comes to 3350-13400 votes that are possibly not counted. Cool, huh?

    How the hell could I not vote? Indiana is a seriously Republican state, and only recently (12 years) has it gone with a Democrat governor and congressmen. The GOP has fought like hell to get it back, and I cannot allow that to happen. I did, however, write in Nader. This is simply because I do not like only two major parties, and Indiana was Georgie Jr.'s by double-digit points.
