I am so tired of hearing of these kinds of exploits. MS and Mac use these actions as an excuse to say the Unices are security hazards. Either these kiddies need to grow up or we must keep up our watch for these tools. Of course, I don't need to say this to most of you, but it is those that are lax in maintaining their machines that put others at risk.
I am thinking of putting the Roadrunner in a Nascar race. That would make it much more interesting. How about it? Coyote and Roadrunner chasing each other around in the Indy 500 race. Elmer Fudd shooting at Tiger Woods in the Master's. This could improve things tremendously!
I especially like the idea of tiny gremlins messing around at a political debate.
I should take offense to this, but I understand where you are coming from. For the record, I enjoy learning other languages, as do other people I have met. I was semi-fluent in French, but its been a few years. I am currently learning Italian as well.
Now that that is established, I will help you out my friend. Spell "speeks" as "speaks", and you shall be taken a bit more seriously.
Wasn't there something before on 64-bit Linux? Oh, yeah. Here's the slashdot post on it. It was about the RedHat distro for the itanium. I wish they had looked into it a bit more, they simply mentioned it without going any further in-depth. Oh, well.
I would maintain that probably the best thing any parent could do is instill in their child a healthy attitude towards sex. Another thing would be to monitor their on-line activities until they are either responsible or of a certain age.
It amazes me that these people forget that the first line of defense starts out in the homes, with the parents. A kid who is aware of sex and what it is, but realizes that he is not ready for it will not go looking for porn and will stay away from sites dealing with it.
But for those who are for censorship online: You cannot force someone to be good. They must want to be good.
Having been an Apple employee at one time, at what point did Apple fade to the back and the PC (read Microsoft) come to the forefront. What were the causes of this turn-around? Do you, personally, think that Apple can successfully become a true contender in the PC market?
Okay, let's think a bit here. A windmill to recharge the electric batteries to help extend charge. This windmill will also increase drag, thus forcing the car to expend more energy to keep speed. Does this seem contradictory to anyone else? Were they drunk when this proposition was put forward? Geez...
Okay, lets make the icon a pic of Sailor Moon. One of the worst playing animes out there . But, for some reason, I have to see it through. Perhaps I am a bit masochistic in that sense...
I already know that this is not what is going to happen, but I will express my opinion anyway. I truly wish that genetic treatment will become standard for all, some kind of universal treatment based not on what the parents or guardians can pay for. I want my children to not suffer from poor eyesight, like I do. I want my children to be free of asthma, unlike me. I want the possibility of weeding out diabities, and genetic cardiac disease. But I am just a dreamer...and this will never be. There will instead be attempts to create the perfect athlete, and the perfect intellect. Genetic changes will go to the highest bidders. Now there will be a physical difference between classes, and there will be, mark my words, resentment.
They really seem to like the word "constellation" don't they? I'm sorry, but calling someone a star does not give them a heavenly body, and calling this network a "constellation" will not make it stellar. Before MS, there was a lot individuality on the 'net. Now MS is trying to reverse what they have done in part to try and make a few bucks and kill a few competitors. I personally believe that the ambivalence that they have sown will kill them in this respect. I think that people will not take this up, and MS will lose. Of course, they will probably start bundling it, and with most people as dumb as they are....
This is going to be good. The Court of Appeals has already accepted the MS appeal, but the Supreme Court could snub them for being too eager (they accepted in less than 24 hours) to take the case. Or, the Supreme Court could snub Jackson and the DoJ by refusing, or snub MS by saying its not worth their time. It would depend on how the refusal is worded. Or everyone could just read in whatever they want to think no matter how its worded. It happens all the time, I'm sure. I would think it would be in MS's best interest for the Supreme Court to take it on, but one can never be sure how things will turn out. I would bet that MS and their lawyers will not pull a single trick like they did in Jackson's court, and that they will be on their best behavior. I think that they tried to make Jackson rule as he did, and for the reasons he did (let's admit it, they were pretty rude in his court). Now, they will make him out to be prejudice against MS, and probably will pull it off. But will the Appeals court or Supreme Court buy it?

MS Lawyer frantically writing down court strategy: Make Jackson out to be prejudiced against MS.
Do you really think this is finally going to make go to Mars? I don't. Call me pessimistic, but the Ignorant Masses do not have the enthusiasm for space anymore to make the politicians back an manned Mars Mission. I really, truly hope that I am wrong, this is the kind of mission that we need. I just don't think that it is going to happen. In a few years, this will all have faded away, and some will wonder, "What happened? Why aren't we out there?"
I fear that I now can see bad things stemming from this. Suppose that now the government and businesses are allowed now to electronically notify you of such things as invalid licenses, etc. Suppose you do not get this notification? "Sorry sir/madam, but our records show that you were notified..." Bad things. I think I still want any and all notifications in hard copy. I do not trust beauracracy to be that nice as to give second notice on anything important.
From everything I have heard and read, I doubt that MS has a real chance of appeal. I believe that Judge Jackson had a really good reason for every judgement he made, and that his decision was really in the best interest of everyone inolved. A reversal is really the worst thing that could happen at this point. I truely hope that MS is denied outright an appeal.
A word to others out there. It is not that I am just anti-MS, though I am, it is that I see everywhere evidence that the PC software market is stagnating. (In spite of a Linux rebirth.) The idiot users out there (stereotypical Windows users, does not mean every Windows user) do not help whatsoever. In this age, we need compatability, not uniformity. There is a difference. I am also in favor of computer literacy, which MS does to advance. Instead, MS permits the everyday, idiot user access to a community that once once the playground of the competent. This is the basis of my personal dispute with MS.
ICANN wanted the money now, and would make an agreement later. Is it just me, or is puting money down before you know what the product is just bad business sense? What the hell was ICANN thinking?
I was kinda wary of the prospect of ICANN to begin with. I do not like the idea of a coporate body holding so much power (as if they do not already) over the internet, which I hold so dearly. I know that it was supposed to be a democratic-analog with elections and such to determine who was to hold a seat in ICANN. Did anyone really think that was going to happen? Of course not.
First, thanks to thundrcast for answering my question, and I apoligize for the boasting I did. Different problems require different set-ups, and from thundrcast's reply it sounds as if what they have is adequate for their research. Our own is analyzing atmosperic Cherenkov radiation, both electron and proton showers. And now for all the other questions. We have 44x CDroms because the supplier threw them in for free.;) While they are handy for loading and re-analyzing data, the only really useful bay drive is the DVD-RW. The dual machine is not K6/2, but two of the Athlons. And yes, we could rip a lot of Britany Spears, but here we would all rather rip Christina Aguilera.;)
Did the site say anywhere the ultimate purpose of the cluster? Is it just to test speed and cost-effectiveness? Also, it sounds like the machines are lacking in some hardware departments. Do they have high-end graphics cards, what kind of drives are they currently sporting? My research group is also based at Purdue, and it sounds like the cluster we have set up is superior. We currently have ten nodes (one dual) each running Redhat. The processors are AMDs, 6 K6/2's and 3 Athlons. 550MHz and 6-700Mhz respectively. All have 256Mb of RAM and 44x CD drives. We also have 100MBit intranet. The current setup ran 10 grand, with monitor and monitor switches. I doubt the ACME cluster could run the simulations we run. Our simulations have a run-time of 12 hours. I wonder what it would be on theirs...
Okay, now I'm done with the "Mine is better than yours" rant.

I am wondering, why not? I mean, think of the challenge it would pose. We could learn as much from such a project as we did the Space Program from the 60's. This asteriod "Kleopatra" is an almost ideal shape for such an endeavor. From the JPL pictures, it appears to rotate end-over-end, which could provide some gravity from angular acceleration. The middle portion would be great for zero-g laboratories. Is transforming this asteroid into a space station really such an outrageous idea?
At first it seems a daunting task: to find someone with geeky tendencies to willingly rub elbows with the people in Congress or Parliment. I, however, am one to advocate a different approach.
What I am saying is this: Screw the system and form a new one. That's right, a coup d'etat! Lets all of us geeks, nerds, and just plain weirdos form an alliance and create new world order. Then, and only then, shall the ideals that we hold dear be safe from the preying minds in D.C.

Okay, I will come right out and say that I really don't know much about blocking software. In fact, I have no idea how it is supposed to work. If someone would try their best to enlighten me as to how such a package would decide what is to be blocked and what is okay to pass through?
Ugh! If the sheep (meaning the general populous) follow in this as with other really stupid and debatable topics, I will go ahead and damn myself and offer up a way to repeal all anonymity. It is simple really. When you next buy a new computer, you will only buy a share in a government-owned computer. You will not have access to change any preferences, and any and all of your actions at home or on the net will be recorded and sent in. Any activity deemed "illegal" will be found and you will rot in a deep, dark prison cell for the remaining days of your life.
What really scares me is that someone out there is now reading this and saying to himself, "Hey, that's a terrific idea!"
The scientific comuunity will wet itself in anticipation of getting this computing power. Simulations, weather patterns, raw data processing, you name it. Some would even boast of having one of these babies running the printing queue.

Also, keep in mind that this might not be a malicious action by sys-admins, it could be that they are doing this merely to keep the bandwidth clear. It does not necessarily have to be to supress anyone's fun.
