  1. They're afraid of the community they helped create on Mozilla Demanding Firefox Display EULA In Ubuntu · · Score: 1

They're afraid of being torn to shreds by the open source community; the Firefox trademark is seen as something like a big life preserver for Mozilla. Without that trademark, they have a wide-open platform that can be duplicated, repackaged, improved upon (out of spite), etc. But people recognize the Firefox brand, and that's all they got. So ironically, they end up being afraid of their own community. Sad.

My guess is there's a way to remotely mark people. But I really don't know. Ship them weapons with this stuff smeared on it? Anyway, you can read about the technology I mentioned in the PDF file by the Special Operations Group. It specifically mentions stains and even shows a photo of a guy's arm with the stain on it.

You spray a unique bullseye on the target so you can differentiate between targets when several targets converge in another zone. You want to know which one must be killed, which can just be injured (like security guards) etc. Don't trust me though, look it up in the provided SOG PDF files. It's all spelled out right there.

Enemy combatants are sprayed or otherwise marked (lots of ways to do this) with a marker known as a "perfume" or a "stain." This marker works on a very, very small scale. It contains little devices that convert microwave energy into DC power (rectennae).

This effectively gives the military an "electrical output" somewhere on your body that they can use to read your signal. What is being output? Why, your biological signature. So the military fly over you while emitting microwaves, or otherwise light you up. Then they get a positive read on a Mr. Sadiq Abbad from Pakistan...and what's he doing with these other characters? Etc.

I agree that there's something wrong with their approach. When I work with marketing teams who come up with tightly spec'd campaigns that are based on unwise or outright stupid ideas of who should be targeted, it often means that there's a good deal of micromanaging going on by their superiors. I'm not familiar with MS enough to say so, but that's the feeling I get - an ad agency that put this together to fit the MS culture or worked under severe pressure from above (while using Macs, most likely).

  11. What "delicious" means on Seinfeld-Windows TV Ad Anything But 'Delicious' · · Score: 5, Insightful

Delicious, butt-wagging, Seinfeld, cheap shoe stores being abhorrent, poking fun at Mexicans...what do all these things have in common?

Look at your common PHB. Likes "delicious food" as opposed to what the Mac guy eats, probably raw food or wheat grass or something. Thinks butt-wagging and slapstick are funny. Probably laughs at Seinfeld re-runs. Is glad he doesn't shop at the cheap shoe store for athletic shoes, but probably gets his dress shoes there, because who can tell. Has Mexican neighbors, is uncomfortable knowing he's in the same class they are.

This ad is brilliantly tarteted as a sort of subconscious reminder that PHB doesn't have to be a Mac guy, darnit, and he's good enough. Microsoft is here to shove more Applebees cake down his throat.

People who don't sympathize like to imagine that everyone who believes in something outside of our normal sphere of experience is dangerous. They believe that Christians, Muslims, Jews, Quakers, Mormons, etc. are all groups that band together and get what they want while preventing others from enjoying the party too. The criticism tends to work on a sliding scale where religions with the highest requirements of personal sacrifice receive the most criticism, and those that don't necessarily (like some sects of Buddhism, the New Coke for spiritual atheists) get off easy.

We're heading toward a world where, ironically, because of this fear toward belief systems, the state (USA or wherever) is slowly transformed into a megachurch by people who want to be protected from True Believers. The way this always ends is, the people turn the state into a church and worship it (compulsory, of course, unlike normal organized religion) while it gives them license to act in ways that people with moral systems find counterproductive to a trusting society. Fear, distrust, hatred...these are all things politicians will continue to play on for a long time.

It's sad to me that someone like the profanity guy just doesn't have a clue about the emailing mechanism (if he is indeed seeing emailed articles). I support people in their right to really find their own niche on the web; it's just too bad that many of them will never find it because the curve is too steep. Those of us who are happy to use Slashdot have already found our own ways of blocking trash we don't like, but many people are forced to wade through LOTS of stuff that they don't want to see as part of their normal web-surfing experience.

So, I totally sympathize with him, even though it's obvious his email is misdirected.
