  1. Re:Short lived on Australian ISP Wins Case Against Movie Studios · · Score: 1

I'm not sure it's about caring enough - it takes a LOT of work to understand and select between different candidates policies - even then who believes these policies will be followed through? I doubt many have any faith in out politicians to uphold their election promises and policies.

Such most Australian's that I know have simply given up on the system and often simply don't know who they would like to vote for and therefore don't really care who wins..

From my perspective, voting here tends to be more of a popularity contest that has nothing to do with politics or policies.

Heck, I do have a great interest in who get's elected here, but I simply do not have the hundreds of hours to scour policies and understand what each candidate really represents - as far as I can see the system is a broken farce and has outlived it usefulness.

  2. Re:Potato, potato on Company Designs "Big Brother Chip" · · Score: 1

In Australia, retailers mark up the prices how ever they like (pretty much), something like a big screen TV that has a sticker price of say $4K can usually be had for around $3K-$3.5K. The same goes for just about all electronics, gadgets and appliances.

Our retail market is a sham.

Note also that our goods cost significantly more (often 2 times) here in Australia than in the US - it's often to buy the same item in the US and have it shipped to Australia and it still turns out significantly more expensive... This is regardless of where they are manufactured.

Seriously, how on earth do you define a Terrorist? Isn't that almost as difficult as defining a 'bad person' - let's jail all 'bad people' and all people who frequent 'bad people' sites - sorry, but there is too much subjectivity required to determine who is a 'terrorist' that it can not work effectively for the purpose it purports to be for.

Really? I'm just baffled how anyone of any authority could think this is they way we need to head....

I think the world is pretty fscked up, and the shear size of our societies and apparent incompatibilities between them mean they are dysfunctional by virtue - but this is not the solution. I'm not saying I can devise a good solution, but I can recognise that this is not one.

Indeed - sorry I must have been half asleep (perhaps fully asleep) when I made that post - for some reason I thought the OP I replied too was claiming that the cordless phones will be useless in a power outage when the fibre replaces the copper - obviously upon rereading that post I was actually in fierce agreement with the OP..

I'll get back in my box now..

ps, I'm an Australian and pretty much everyone I know uses their mobile (cell) phone as their primary voice contact device - we use our copper lines for our ADSL connections... I don't even have a handset plugged into my copper outlet.

The rental on a copper line from Telstra is over $30 a month - all we get for that is the ability to make charged phone calls - I make none, so I pay $30 a month to Telstra for my phone line just to get ADSL from my ISP over. My ISP charges me $50 a month for a 100GB of data over a ADSL 2 connection over that Telstra copper - I can only acheive a very poor 1 - 2Mb over that very poor and under maintained expensive Telstra copper and I'm in a nice dense suburban area. So I end up paying over $80 a month for a poor 1 - 2Mb connection.

I can go 'naked' - that's the term for having a internet connection without paying Telstra for the copper - you pay the ISP instead, and the ISP install hardware in the Telstra exchange to handle their own back haul. But this saves only $60 a year as the ISP need to pay telstra a portion still, hardly worth it for the down side... Basically Telstra applies a tax on the entire copper system, that I'm sure I've paid for now at least 10 times over.. Its a hideous monopoly that I can't wait to see the back of.
