When 60 hour work weeks not only become the norm (which they have for many already), but become the requirement for many jobs... people will start wondering where those Union sign-up sheets are.
The IT sectors inability to protect itself from that kind of abuse is frightening. Just look at game designers... hell, look at any programming team on a tight deadline. Sure, at first they say these deadlines are rare, and that you'll only have to work overtime to get us through that one project. But then a new project comes up with the same deadline, and another new one, and another... soon you're working 60 hour weeks minimum with no signs of slowing down.
I'm not so sure a guy named Ernest has much room to talk.
"Am I supposed to be happy about having to go down to the DMV and tell them my name is Ernest'? For God's sake, where were my parents? I can't believe they would have let this get by"
I wonder what this will do to the beggar population in that town. I've notice that I almost never carry cash anymore and as such I have no money to give to beggars.
I disagree. Do you know how many false alarms fire departments respond to? A heck of a lot more than real fires, I can tell you that. A local building may have a faultily alarm system and a unit may be called out to it on a nightly basis. Speaking from experience, those kinds of continuous false alarms very rarely have a negative effect on response time.
Certainly, you could say that screeners may not take their job as seriously as a firefighters - I'm doubtful it's as exciting, but it's definitely as important to the safety of civilians and they should be held to the same standards. False alarms should never affect their performance... if it does they should be fired on the spot.
Um. Neither?
- Ordering a wiretap without a warrant could land me in jail, unless I'm the President
