"a simple 'wget' and 'make' later and he has himself a back door"
And a simple 'wget' of a binary already compiled and he has his back door. Isn't that how they do it on Windows?
I'm fairly certain it's a problem with Flash and not Firefox. I have done a pretty crude test for this: I browsed to a lot of flash video sites (pr0n and youtube and etc.) with flashblock disabled. I let the videos play and Firefox open for about two hours. My CPU was on its knees.
I repeated the same thing with flashblock enabled, left it running for several hours and never got the CPU spike.
This was Firefox 3b4, with about 15 tabs open, each one had at least one flash player in it.
Actually what I think is going on is that the "deletionists" (I hate that fscking `term') want to stay on top. The more articles there are, the more they have to monitor... OR someone else would have to monitor. They don't want anyone else to help them, I gather. They want to stay the elitist snobs that they are.
I predict that with more articles about "useless" and "trivial" things, there will be more people to monitor the articles. For example, anytime I make an edit to or add an article, I will go back to the article and monitor it. It's human nature to watch what you have created to see how it changes. So really, the more articles there are, the more people there will be to jump on board and get involved.
Instead of modding this thread, I'm going to post instead because I've put a lot of thought into this.
I think The Singularity(TM) will be brought about through virtual environments. I figure if a computer has access to the physical world -- such as a robotic arm, etc. -- and it's main objective is to model the real world in a virtual world (basically making the virtual world as identical to the real world as possible), it will spark some kind of technology boost.
It will need to be able to rewrite its own software (to a degree, maybe fully?), but the main thing it will need is all the knowledge of the human race, but it will need to know all this from its own discoveries while manipulating our world. Basically when the computer's virtual world in which it 'thinks' gets as close to the real world as possible.
It's damn near 5am so if that didn't make much sense, I blame the booze.
What I think MS should do in order to "maintain compatibility with the installed base AND go upscale at the same time" is to take one of the BSDs and take WINE when it was licensed under X11 and improve the hell out of it. Get that version of WINE to be 100% compatible with 3.x, 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP, and Vista--hell even throw a complete DOS in the mix.
That takes care of maintaining compatibility, and since it would be on top of a BSD, it would make it more upscale at the same time.
What if it's a real emergency, and if the SWAT team isn't sent there immediately, a lot of people die?
How long would it take a cop to get to the scene, verify the need for SWAT (and potentially tipping off the guys inside) and have the SWAT team then readied to go out there? My guestimate would be too long.
Some things you just need immediate response. Nobody should be pranking the SWAT team to come out without a reason... but this is real life and things happen.
I'm the submitter, and I probably do have dyslexia... plus it was 2 in the morning after a long flight and drive home. And being my first article submitted. So yea, I'll try a little harder next time.
Why even do that? Install a keylogger that records every keyboard keystroke. Then install a packet sniffer on every PC as well. Now they have what you typed AND any plain text strings you typed.
They could even install some type of logger that takes screenshots as well.

I've devised a perfect way for electronic voting to work. It has to be in--bear with me--another universe. It requires 1.21 JigaWatts of electricity to make it work. Basically it's freaking impossible to do electronic voting. So either we update the 'business model' of voting or we stick to the old 'business model' and keep doing paper ballots.
Surely there's some new paradigm to voting?
When I used Gentoo on my box (3 years overall), I always used noatime and nodiratime. There's no point for it in a desktop computer. However, it's extremely useful for logs and other things on servers.
Look, I could give a shit how "fast" my upstream and downstream speeds are. I want latency reduced as much as possible. My current ISP is Qwest. They are they only game in town. I can't ping outside the network for under 70ms. I've called and complained. I've even moved to a new residency and I still have high ping.
I agree with the summary. America's broadband is utter shit.
GP here. I pretty much thought the same.
Wow Kdawson... should have known. Didn't check who posted it until after I saw the year of the article: 2002.
I hate this guy and I wish I could filter his "news" posts (revenue stream) out of my view for eternity.

Wow I just laughed my ass off at this comment.
Oh goody another KDawson post. Isn't there a way to filter them out?
I don't see anything funny about that at all.

But that's my opinion, I could be wrong.

Guess the filter didn't like my url.... http://www.bookrags.com/research/infinite-precisio n-arithmetic-wcs/ in plain text.
A very quick Google search for "infinite precise" yielded this.
What I think you meant was, "How can the infinitely precise number be stored and accessed by a computer?" Well, that's not the same thing.
Is there even one serious post that doesn't include the men vs women argument? Who gives a flying fuck!

OMG, you did it! You figure out how to make the flux capacitor... a 4-way Opteron server!!

That's GNU/Linux to you!!!
I did . . . Now I have to eat soup at the kitchen down the street... and to keep warm, I have to stand by a trash fire.
