Perhaps, it is you who is uninformed. I am going to be writing checks totalling 240K to one of the top 10 schools over the next four years, and I am pretty well informed.
The legacies have a relaxed admission standards, but they pay full price, usually these legacies are loaded. They might get a "scholarship", but that would essentially a tax dodging "non-profit" set up by a grand-uncle, administered by Aunt Agatha, benefiting just that clan. Since they full price I do not care.
I do not resent any one poorer than me getting aid. They deserve it.
Nor do I resent anyone with better grades/scores getting aid, they earned it.
It is those who earned as much as I did, and then gamed the system, used income management, etc so that they can claim "low net worth" and get aid. I resent that. Those who earned spectacularly more than I did, and burnt it all off in expensive vacations, hobbies, homes etc can now get assistance. But I saved diligently, lived reasonably, squirreled away the earnings,... now I am asked to pay full price as if I am some loaded millionaire.
And these kids are masters in gaming the system. Their actual SAT scores puts them in the bottom quartile of the admitted students, and they get full aid? Their parents earned more than I did. The kids scored less than my child. And I pay full price and they don't? That is not fair.
I immigrated with a 5000$ loan for airfare. Ended grad school with $18000 in total debt just in 1994. Now the top schools are saying that my 17 year savings puts me in the same bracket as Bushes and Kerrys and Kennedys and I need to pay full price?
If they had used Microsoft Office or saved it in OOXML format, everyone and his brother would be up in arms about being forced buy/use proprietary closed software and how that is the end of the world. But if it is Apple, it is kewl.
Ivies are costing 50-60K per year now a days. Met an alum of U-Chicago who was shocked to learn his alma mater charges 55K per year.
The most refined form of socialism practiced in USA in the admission/financial aid policies of the Ivies. It is all, "If you have the money pay the full price even if you are the top student being admitted. If you don't have money you a get a full free ride, even if you are at the bottom of the admitted students".
The really rich dont care. The poor dont care they get benefited. It is the frugal middle who did all the right things, who took sensible size mortgage, squirreled away the money, took less expensive vacations and cheaper cars and did everything your grandma told you to do, are being punished for good behavior. With incentive system so warped, is there any surprise America is on the decline?
Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan Chase, McKenzy etc are all at awe by the precocious ability shown by this young man. Mr Werobam Erica, spokesman for the Cleptolegit Institute, a think tank where finance managers of the top companies exchange ideas about how to rake in millions of dollars and amending the laws post-facto to make it legal, said that this man is CEO material and predicted great things in store for him.
Yeah, but he got a shellacking in the mid terms, and it is his way of placating the loony right. Obama is just another politician, and he is as clueless as all others. But the central idea that "Govt is incompetent in $area1 and Govt is super great in $area2" is essentially Republican, ($area1 is usually environment, education, social services, healthcare and regulation. $area2 is usually military, law enforcement etc).
Democrats get scared and refuse to fight the Republicans where the Government has done demonstrably good things and cede the point.
The FBI wouldn't be tracking him if he was actually "a 20 year old community college student who has never done anything [wrong]", as the article says. Maybe he's Ahmadinejad's nephew or something. Can we have some actual reporting?
Or could have the same name as OBL's second cousin.
Or some FBI agent misspelt OBL's second cousin while punching in the "suspect" database.
Or OBL's second cousin has grudge against this guy over some girlfriend (that would be OBL's third cousin) and ratted on this guy to FBI.
Or OBL's second cousin is having a side business of ratting out five suspects per month to FBI at the rate of 1000$ per named suspect.
Or Al Que`da has a counter intelligence operation where its operatives name so many innocent people to FBI to dilute and scatter FBI's resources.
Republicans are a strange breed. When it comes to Education or Environment or Social welfare or financial regulation, "Govt is incompetent, Govt is the problem, Govt cant do anything right. Govt employees are useless slackers...".
But when it comes to warrant-less wiretaps, surveillance, etc the very same government employees are paragons of virtue and epitome of ability.
No, it has not degenerated. It has always been like that. Read about the patent fights between Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers attempts to run Henry For out of town way back in 1900s. Think about the patent fights over ailerons vs wing warping between the Wright Brothers and the Curtiss aircraft company (Wrigts were wrong). The bitter personal feud between Edison and Westinghouse, Westinghouse poaching Tesla from Edison. Tesla getting to huge fights with Marconi. I have read about some patent office clerk being bribed/blackmailed into time stamping one application ahead of the other, (may or may not be the Marconi vs Logdge, not sure).
There were thousands of patent disputes, angry personal feuds, and quite a lot of underhanded dealings in the patent system. Just that in the internet age there was a mad rush and these disputes have exploded in number compared to previous decades.
I dunno, most cars in England have a manual gearbox and are the preferred way to drive over here...
If petrol (Brit for gasoline) costs as much here as it does there, more people would use the stick shift (Am for gear lever) and manual transmission (Am for gearbox).
I made the stupid mistake of actually reading the fine article. It seems to suggest that the old system of using paper strips and flight names is faster, more reliable and has bigger capacity to handle real time input than the new one based on computers and "smart stripes". Should have waited for people to read and post comments, that way some kind soul would have posted something easier to understand.
You will never get a Video out from iPad. The analog hole due to headphones can't be closed, but no content creator would agree for an anlog hole in video stream. In fact the disaster of Vista could be traced to Microsoft's attempt to create a "protected audio path" and "protected video path". They can't be implemented without signed drivers. (Even with signed drivers, one could hack it but that is a different story). Signed drivers made so many existing devices incompatible. Though this is not the single cause for Vista's failure, it contributed significantly to the delay and poor quality drivers and incompatibility issues.
You seem to know more about the issue than I do. Slashdot does not allow me to unpost anything. I will stop making these claims about NaCl in future. Thanks for correcting my misunderstandings.
NaCl is designed to let corporations stuck with old IE6 based apps that do not run unless all the bugs in IE6 are present. Badly written code, that will work only on a badly broken browser. NaCl is basically an infrastructure to do virtualization in a browser.
There is nothing to stop malicious web sites asking users to give them permission to run NaCl based content "for exciting new great web experience". But no user should/would give untrusted servers on the web to dish out raw x86 instructions and execute it. The plan of google is to punch a hole in the walled garden of Microsoft.
To say they are a bit better than Yahoo which is quite literally a zombie?
It is even more pathetic than that. Yahoo is actually using Bing as its search engine provider for quite some time. So the migration is not due to any inherent superiority of Bing over Yahoo, noticed by the users. The computers set to use yahoo by default, which happened when the users installed yahoo instant messenger some four or five years ago, are dying. They are being replaced by new ones that use Bing by default. This set of users, about 8% of the total, are clueless about search engines. These chumps would not recognize a search engine if it was served to them on a silver platter with watercress around it and a side of fish curry.
Because the interface to Google monoculture is just a standard compliant browser. So the cost of switching away from Google, when its demands are onerous, is practically zero. The only way Google can maintain its leadership position is by making sure its customers are happy. Otherwise they will just walk away. The foundation of Microsoft monoculture was interlocking monopolies between the OS and the application stack (mainly MSOffice) and the switching costs were enormous.
Just take the basic software that is doing it, extend it by a wireless power delivery and print it on a contact lens! Suddenly the whole world is beautiful, your gf looks like Aishwarya Roy to you, and you look like the Superstar "The Robot" Rajnikant to her....
But people know how to keep strip club visits/bills secret and telephone records are not easy to get, nor are they as detailed as what these morons post on line about themselves. I have no sympathy for the cheaters, nor for the insanely indifferent to their privacy.
Would the Open Source Communities agree to be directed by the director paid by Microsoft? Shouldn't the job title be something along the lines of manager/director of relationship/liaison with open source communities? Or Microsoft thinks it can just move in and claim ownership by fiat?
What happened to embrace and extend before extinguish?
The people who are making huge profits from these activities will be long gone by that time. All the private funds, private equity, Koch brothers would have pocketed all the profits and sold the "investments that have the proven track record of profitability" to pension funds, mutual funds and general stock market. But what people actually buy are "past performance is not a predictor of future performance" along with all the past liabilities. So the tax payers will ultimately bail out the unfortunate pension funds and stock investors
This is the best blend of Capitalism and Socialism America has created. Privatize all profits and nationalize all loss and all liabilities.
Cant believe someone this naive would have amassed 200K by his own work. Either it is a lottery or it is inheritance. Wish the Koch brothers also would be this stupid and blow some 20 billion in saving fake Republicans and fake libertarians.
You bartered with Google for your time, your eye-ball time, the value of being gazed at by Your Highness for some mail service. Unlike money these payments are not refundable. Going forward, if the reliability of Google's mail service is poor, you move away from it, and the ad dollars will follow you to your new email service provider.
It is exactly like not liking what is being dished out by the ad-supported network TV and going for pay per view, netflix subscription etc.
Simple solution: Create a second gmail account to serve as the back up. Always BCC: this account every mail you send from the main account. Auto forward every received mail to this account. Chances of gmail wiping both due to the same glitch is remote. This is likely to be as safe, as reliable as mucking around with imap clients running on some home grown hand-me-down server and cron jobs to take periodic back ups. Far cheaper too.
That is a pretty uninformed rant.

The way FB makes me feel better can be summed up with one word: schadenfreude.
Somehow I feel very happy when people with poor vocabulary do not understand that word. Wish I knew how to describe it.

What the hell? Don't you guys know the IEEE standard scientific notation for writing numbers with a characteristic and a mantissa? 5.0e-08 m
