Hands On With Apple IPad 2

adeelarshad82 writes "Yesterday's announcement of the second-generation iPad showed exactly why there was so much excitment around the device. As the video hands on shows, iPad 2 makes up for all the things lacking in the original iPad. The 1GHz dual-core A5 chip does justice to apps like Photo Booth and over all user experience. Moreover, while the screen carries the same resolution, Apple was able to pack it in a noticably thinner iPad 2. Infact its dimensions, 13.4 mm to 8.8mm thick, make it 33% thinner than iPhone 4. Also while the cameras aren't HD, the inclusion itself provides an opportuntiy for Facetime, which is actually more interactive than what we've seen so far on other Apple devices."

Existing subscribers, and subscribers who sign up using say, a non-iOS device, or the service's website, are exempted from this requirement.

It may affect prices, or services may try to keep their revenue streams intact by adding new subscribers to offset the lower revenue-per-subscriber. Apple's betting that their services and their customers will help developers do the latter. Aggregator / Middleman services like Readability will probably have to rethink their business model, unless Apple relents, and either change the proportion they pass on to publishers, or move away from subscription billing. Yes, the Xoom has a USB port. That is a good feature and I like it. The iPad has a USB port, but only if you put a special dongle on the special Apple connector. But I guess your point was that it would be silly for a rifle to have a USB port. In that case, please list the actual features of the Xoom that are silly. You might, for example, mock the Xoom for having a barometer; but it adds no significant weight or cost, and it will be very useful for certain applications, and I don't see how you could claim it makes the Xoom harder to use, so perhaps it's not that silly after all.

As for batteries, the Xoom has built-in sealed battery pack, just like the iPad. The iPad claimed battery life is 9 hours for the 3G model; the Xoom claimed battery life is 8 hours, with a faster processor. The iPad 2 claims to have 9 or 10 hour battery life.

Maybe you can go by a Xoom. I think it does everything you want and it's just $170 more than a comparable 3G iPad. Then you can start saving money with your $50 SD cards. IMHO excluding flash is one of the best features of iOS.

How exactly is "excluding it" superior to "not bundling it, but allowing people to get it if they want it"?

I guess it is good that you can actually already do this with a dongle that weighs like an ounce. Cool thing is your whole tablet does not have be bulkier to support the slot when you are only going to use it once a week!

No its is not good. Does anybody LIKE dongles?

A dongle is a clumsy solution.

They are far more prone to break, or break the port they are sticking out of than a built in slot. They are far more likely to not be around when you need it.

    They cost far more.

They have to be in your pocket at the ready for them to be useful. An ipad's light sleek design is somewhat negated if I'm have to carry a bag of dongles around to use with it.

And its still pathetic and slow as molasses. A worthless iReview on iLounge was glowing about how it transfered 500MB in 2 minutes and used only 2% of the battery.

My current camera uses an 8GB card. So apparently I need to wait 32 minutes and consume 1/3rd of the battery. And that's assuming there will be room to copy it over, which is not a safe assumption at all.

Surely it would be a lot better if it just let me access it where it was right on the card.

I believe the exact wording is that it must have a persistent connection. it is why none of the archos tablets have marketplace, or google applications.

There is another restriction on developers that if you use google marketplace you can't use any other marketplace.

Apple may seem hostile but google is trying to actively kill development.

Of course you do choose to exclude yourself from the marketplace that includes more than 90% of the paid mobile apps sold in the past year :)

That might bother me, if there were any apps that I care about that are not available for Android. So far, the Android Marketplace seems to have everything I want.

Also, if you choose to get an iPad, you are letting Apple veto entire categories of apps for you. Specifically, I want Python on my tablet; and Apple's rules forbid ever having Python on an iPad. (It is an interpreter; Apple forbids all interpreters and emulators.)

So from my point of view, availability of the software I want is exactly the reason I would rather have a Xoom than an iPad 2. It is ironic that you tried to raise this as a negative.
