That fucking job should be paying at least $75k. Disagree? Fucking applying! And don't cry to me when you're at the office for 80+ hours a week!
Common, dude! This is nothing less than a transparent scheme to get highly qualified persons work for free. Why does this remind me of IBM and Linux?
And, Goddamn Richard Stallman! Him and His "software needs to be free" !
yEAH, Yeah, He doesn't mean that software should be given away - but, tell that to all those "free software" folks out there!
Please!, you F/OSS folks! Take pride in your skills! CHARGE - at least SOMETHING for your work! YOU are creating a supply that is outweighing demand - READ up on your ECONOMICS!!!
Andromeda. The hundred-trillion-gagillion dollar prize would be worth it then.
Ok, dumb joke. But, it's like the X Prize Organization is escalating it's spnsorship to new heights. I find this quite encouraging. What a way to push science and engineering. This really tickles my libertarian bone - no government involvement.
Oops, I forgot! There's some real libertarian haters here on/.. I guess because they confuse Libertarians with conservative Republicans?
NOTE: Using a lowercase 'l' when describing my Libertarian tendancies was to hint that I haven't quite drank their Kool-Aid (TM).
Many so-called "ordinary" users think that they prefer a power vs time curve that grows logarithmically so that they can learn it quickly.
It's really easy to pick up by fucking around with it.
The developers of FOSS, on the other hand, prefer a power vs time curve that looks more exponential, so that as soon as they invest a little time learning how to do something, they can accomplish tasks more quickly, and save more time overall.
You have to RTFM, study it, and memorize a shit load of commands, but when you do, you're a fucking speed demon on that software and you get your shit done much faster than anyone on a GUI.
But from reading the summary, he just uncovered sloppy security - breaking in using default passwords?!?
The other thing is about the "airbrushing UFOs out of photos.."
A UFO could be anything - Unidentified Flying Object - doesn't mean flying saucer from the planet Krypton. AND...if there really was flying saucers from Krypton out there, who's keeping the Europeans, Chinese, Russians, etc... from publishing those photos...
I agree with previous posters - BS.
The guy's trying to make a living on the talk-show circuit - somehow. Is there a way of finding out if he's being compensated for these "interviews"?
I took it that he was reassuring folks that right now, there's no need to panic or anything like that. I'm sure there's plenty of folks who lived through the first eruption are getting a little freaked right now.
Basically, it's a quick way to get out of thinking and go back to watching nascar.
I once knew this young woman who dressed like white trash, liked NASCAR, and was actually pretty! I almost shit in my pants when I found out that she was finishing up her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at GA Tech!
Stereotypes are based on truth, but when someone doesn't fit a stereotype, it kind of makes me question my whole perception of things.
BTW, I agree with you. Now, I think I need to enter into some deep contemplation....
but I'm sure that Google neglected to "donate" to Republicans.
The guys at Enron "donated" to everybody and look where it got them. I still remember IIRC, CNN posting the contribution that each congressman got from Enron when they spoke. If something is really politically unpopular, you make campaign contributions until you're backrupt and it won't do any good!
If I were one of the Enron guys, to make a point to all of those grandstanding sanctimonious politicians I would have yelled out "I've paid good money for you people! Now, fall in line!"
AND? What happened then? Did the girls go back and have wild sex with him because, ya know, the shock that he wasn't a 17 year old studmuffin must have made them lose all judgement? Did they choose to meet him in a secuded area, or out in a public place where he couldn't exactly just grab them and shove them in his black van?
He used his handcuffs, THEN they had wild sex!
Ok, bad joke. The girls joined the cop for a few (I don't know if they still do it) lectures to students about the dangers of MySpace, the internet, and publishing personal information. That's all that was said on the program.
Thinking about it overnight, I think it was on that NBC "Dateline" show. They've been doig this series on predators.
some girls and their parents how dangerous it can be.
A local cop in Middletown, CT posed as a 17 year old. He just struck up a conversation with one girl. He then ask to be her "friend" (a MySpace term to be added to a buddy list). After the first addition, he just kept sending emails to the initial contact's friends asking to be put on their buddy list. The cop also pointed out that there was enough information on the web sites to actually find these girls. When they finally met him, they were shocked to find out that he was this pounchy thirty something.
Anyway, a lot of it is social engineering. Once you get into a circle, you're have access to a ton of stuff. It also happens to adults. ONe of the best ways to start a con game is to go to church! A con artist will get involved with the minister or someone else at the church and then others think that this guys is "alright". The con artist just starts reeling'em in! No tech required!
BTW: I saw this on TV and I don't remeber the show.
I've been thinking about it - here's a karma story for you!
Many years ago, I was in an elevator. There were 3 people: A fellow programmer, a secretary, and me. I asked the fellow programmer if so and so were still there - innocently enough - I was wondering if he went to lunch or left for the day. Maybe a stupid way to put it, but I was on a death march and I wasn't thinking too clearly - kind of like now:-) Anyway, the secretary went ballistic. She started yelling at me, "So you think your sooo good! (We just had layoffs at PMSC) You think that you're..." I can't remember the rest, but I still remember how pissed I was at her for misunderstaning me. And now, I did the same to someone else.
I recognize that the original poster already said that wasn't what he was going for, but being someone who works in tech support, I have to disagree with you.
I'd like to point out that your sample is folks who call into tech support - not exactly random.
FTFA: Google believes Microsoft is trying to make it difficult for users to choose any other search engine except Microsoft's on the browser by making its own product the default search window on the toolbar.
Parent: This is a relative measure, and probably 99% of slashdotters would change the search engine default with no difficulty. But one step out of the cozy techno-geek door and easy becomes Partial Differential Equations to many casual users.
I've never even heard of "Dogpile" until a 'casual user' pointed it out to me. People (non-/. readers) are not as ignorant or stupid as a few arrogant folks here on/. believe. Those people do not have any problem typing in whatever they want. Browsers and search engines are so common, people use them as easily as the TV.
Italics were used to point out the typical "us" (smart people) vs. "them" (stupid people) attitude on/..
I have lost over 40 lbs and my blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight is now back to normal. I have always exercised but when I got into my 30s, my weight became an issue. So, in other words, by changing my lifestyle, I have reduced sooo many health risks (renal failure, diabetes, heart attack, strokes, etc...) that I can (hopefully) have a higher quality of life when I'm older.
My gf is in medical. When she is informing her patients she tells them to stay away from a bunch of foods - she has some really cool props that shows how much sugar and fat is in the US diet! In short, you are absolutely correct in your assessment of the US diet!
From what I've gathered from folks who treat heart disease and other weight related ailments, the access of evil is: Coke, Krispy Kreme, McDonalds (of course, everyone else in that industry!) and ALL of the cigarette corps! It's funny, all of the firms I mentioned are also some of the rischest and most powerful corps on the planet - with the influence on our politicans to match!
If code looks 'dirty' (hard to read), they will often rewrite it so that it's easier to audit for bugs in the future.
That is one brilliant policy! Kudos to whomever implemented that!
It reminds of an incedent about 12 years ago. A bunch of us entry level programmers were sitting around and this one guy pipes up and says "Look! I wrote an entire function (it was C) in one line!" He did, too. It was one of those 'for' loops with a 'while' and a bunch of things in one line. It was impossible to read. I just shook my head and said, "If there's a bug in that code, and I get assigned to it, I'm coming for you!"
I used to get $120K for that work.

Yes, sir!
Maybe. That's why I'm hesitating to drink the Kool-Aid.

What are we supposed to look for?
BTW, "The Fedora Core 5 Install Experience" sounds like a Fusion group's name. It probably work geat in Silicon Valley!

Again, my apologies.

I guess that I'm a little, well, "punchy" regarding this.

This is an example of when business needs outweigh the tech needs - which, unfortunately, is always.
Fucked.
I read that as:
VoIP creates new ways of delivering filthy-featured phone services that promise big cost savings...
Oh-boy.
It's supposed to be: Sick, fat, AND ugly! Those things have a high correlation.
My gf is in medical. When she is informing her patients she tells them to stay away from a bunch of foods - she has some really cool props that shows how much sugar and fat is in the US diet! In short, you are absolutely correct in your assessment of the US diet!

That's nothing! There's this guy that keeps sending me p3n1s enlargement ads. How did he know?!? Do they have access to my medical file?
