The first 9 or 10 moves come directly out of an opening book. It knows what the best results are from games where these openings were played. That is why it choose the position. Kasparov continually tried to do something slightly unorthodox to throw the computer off.

  6. MIS not the way to go. on On the Differences Between MIS/CIS/CS Degrees? · · Score: 1

I went through the MIS side of my school's program and I regret it. I originally did it becuase the professors touted all of this talk about how the MIS majors will be the managers of the CS people. I wanted to do some management over software eventually so I took it. But what they don't tell you is that YOU CAN'T GET A JOB. I think at my school the CS majors had a 95% placement (if not higher) and the MIS probably had only 50%, if that. This was this past spring when people were not hiring that much. They had to be picky and they picked people with more technical background.
I know that I was better at programming then half of the CS majors but companies didn't care, they wanted the classes that you have taken. Luckily I had taken my minor in CS so I got some good programming skills and that helped me get my job.
My recommendation is to take a CS major and go for the easier MIS( or even plain old business minor) so that you have some of the business classes.

  10. Installed it, No Better on Download.com Features Linux Distro · · Score: 2

I installed Armed linux after I read a post last week dealing with WinLinux. It installs from the DOS prompt. It is based on Red Hat from teh nearest I can imagine. It sets up everything (mounting file systems and all that) without the user. Then it goes to a nice graphical interface to set up mouse, keyboard, video etc. That of course didn't work for me for some odd reason because it wouldn't boot into the system. So i ran x86config and set everything up and it worked fine. The video was still really bad, but I couldn't find my exact monitor specs and I think that was the problem. This is my second linux install. I installed RedHat early this summer and this install was no easier. The only problem I had last time was getting the video to work and that is my same problem now. So I guess what I am saying is that from a newbie standpoint this install was no easier than the real one. And Armed Linux has a very slimed down version red hat, it is missing some software. So overall, I don't recommend it.

  11. Chess as trivial as tic-tac-toe?? on Kasparov vs. The World: It's all different · · Score: 1

First off, I think Kasparov has the game locked at this point. I let Chessmaster play the game out between itself and after about 10 hours and some 50 moves later, Kasparov won with a queen and a King. He has much better positioning. Now my other thing is sort of a question. Judging by the fact that chess is all based on mathmatics, I have heard that there is a specific algorithm for the game. So I have been told that there is a specific set of moves (not known by us or even the fastest computer) that will always result in a win or a tie but never a loss. This is the tic-tac-toe theory. Does anyone have any comments or info on this subject. I don't completely buy it but I would like to learn more about it. Anybody heard of this theory before?
