Speaking as someone who has a few (now expired) MCSE & CCNA certs, and a B.S. from a State U. I would say: forget certs AND school, and open your own business.

Don't get me wrong, college was a blast, but I've been kicked in the pants twice by higher education- being certified right at the tail end of 1999 (before the bust), and then graduating into the robust job market of 2005. Call it poor timing, or just plain old bad luck.

Start your own business, learn to read, and network with competitors and other professionals in your field. These days, some guys I work with are HS drop outs, others have advanced degrees (PhD/MBA/MS), and I find myself learning different things from all of them.

On the other hand, my wonderful 6-week certification "training" has rotted out of my brain long ago. And the only thing I learned at state school was how to build a bong out of old Romen noodles.

Like I said, it was a blast- but not worth the $30k in loans I'm repaying now. (IMO)

Oh, and on second thought- my A+ cert will never expire. But don't expect to get a lot of attention for an A+ cert (I've never had a client who even knew what it was, and most employers don't do a lot of work on DOS these days, strangely enough.)

I've been watching "The Simpsons" on DVD this chilly Saturday morning, and I think Bart Simpson said it best:

"Lisa, if you don't watch the violence, you'll never get desensitized to it."

As an American, my biggest beef with the way sex is handled on TV is the BLATANT hypocricy. A legal-aged (and IMO beautiful) woman like Janet Jackson has a nipple slip out, and we scream bloody murder. Then, we dress our best-looking 15 year olds like whores, and parade them around endlessly during prime time. Finally, we arrest and scorne any of those among us who dare to reach for the forbidden fruit.

Don't get me wrong- sex with kids is bad. But sex isn't. In fact, sex is how we got all these 15 year old in the first place. I'm not about to suggest that TV or video game violence is "rsponsible" for anything- unlike you, and your kids, it lacks free will. However, simply looking at the variety of violent acts among children, it is clear that something very bad is going on here.

If I had a daughter, I would prefer she stay at home, dressed in sweat pants and 40 pounds overweight. However, given the choice between buying her a box of condoms, and driving her to the emergency room, I'd rather bite the bullet and suffer a few minutes of embarrasment explaining how a "winky" works.

In my opinion, this "Hillary is a woman" and "Obama is black" chatter is insulting to women and blacks. So what? OF COURSE a woman/black is just as capable, just as deserving of our consideration. To suggest anything else is silly.

That way, I can point to her in shining example and say: "See! See! She made it. I'm not buying your excuse. Sorry."

I'm not keen on Obama's stance on gun control, but I still hope he wins. If for no other reason than to lay this "black" issue to bed once and for all.

If any "standard" is proposed, it should be a mild, behind-the-scenes change. Perhaps a META TAGS header, i.e. rss/application or META KEYWORDS. And only to make it easier for scrapers and aggregators (and of course, our beloved Google).

If anything, we need to be focusing on "concept" mining. Synonyms, slang and syntax must all be considered. For example: "President Bush", "George Bush" and "W" might all be used to categorize the President (#43). However, on some pages, those same tags might be referring to H.W. Bush (#41) AND his son (#43). In other words, on site #1 these tags would refer to one concept, on site #2 they might refer to two distinct concepts.

On the other hand, it would be fantastic to click on the tag "funny", and immediatley see a list of all "hysterical", "knee-slappers" and "yuks"- all contained in a single "concept" list.

Knowing when to combine a concept, and when to "split" it into multiple concepts, is what the "intelligent web" is all about. I believe this is not only possible, but inevitable- and it will make the current web look like an Apple IIe v. a MacBook Pro.

Mastering the grouping of tags will provide a fantastic step forward in this pursuit.
