As a question for the geeks and engineers of the community - how truly difficult is it to make one of these voting machines safe for use? Is there something I'm missing that would make it difficult to have a kiosk with an imaged system that's been certified, locked down, and can print out results, without it being easy to tamper with or easy to fudge the numbers of? It seems like this is something that engineers could have designed to be foolproof by now, and at a fraction of the budget. How truly complex is the problem they're trying to solve?

  7. Consolidation on Book Review: The Information Diet · · Score: 1

There's a lot to be said for the "personalization" trend of places like Google and Facebook, where they shape all of your results according to what their algorithms think is most important to you. Can readers weigh in on how the consolidation of the internet has affected their own use of it?

I've found that rather than randomly browsing the web at large to find any particularly interesting page, my needs are primarily met by Wikipedia, Google's suite of apps, Facebook, Slashdot, and YouTube. Between the five of those, I've got almost all the bases covered, and my habits have *shaped* to not really imagine needing anything outside of those things. Other websites have become the outliers instead of the norm, and so I would say my "diet" has shifted because it's got a more consistent stream of media from these sites, but it's also being tailored to fit what I've become accustomed to. and I can actually mentally perceive my perception of the internet changing to accommodate it. It's erroneous I know, but I occasionally feel like the internet equivalent of a couch potato because the whole of the web is at my fingers, and I don't really browse to any of the other sites without a more specific need to. Things like Stumble are used by a lot of my friends, but most of the main information comes from those big five. I'm curious to hear the thoughts below.

Anyone in the industry or in the know want to take a stab at where the numbers come from? It seems that 5GB is a common enough number for phone carriers. Asking a question for the community here: how did Hollywood get the kind of power and leverage that it has? As a major source of media I can see how it would be valued by government but the stories you hear these days of the lobbying power and secret international cables that surface make it seem like they are constantly overstepping the norms of most other industries.

How did it get to the state that it's now, and why is government working so hard to protect media interests internationally so often? Is it the size of Hollywood and consequent lobbying power, a belief that Hollywood is a/the important industry to protect, or something else? Hollywood seems to receive the most benefit from all copyright laws and protections, so how did they get to this amount of power that they can exert this much control over legislation? Even in the old days I know they had the ratings boards that could strong arm quite a lot of policies.

Because the water from precipitation is so low in Colorado and we're in a semi-arid climate, there's a lot of concern for the watershed and depriving the people downstream of water. Rainbarrels are technically illegal because that moisture is needed to maintain the natural flow of streams - damming, controlling, or restricting its natural flow can cause problems further down the line, or so it's proposed. But it's scarce enough on a climate level that even the rain is considered necessary.

It's been stated on here before that there's been the trend of the phone industry to keep going through these mergers. I remember somebody posted a great flow chart of the monopoly breakup of old Bell and the subsequent acquisitions that followed.

Is there any reason why this industry in particular keeps splitting and then gradually getting re-merged - is it any different than any other industry and just more publicized, or is this industry prone to more consolidation over all? Seeing as it all seems to be the derivatives of the old regime AT&T that were gradually reacquired, why is all the power gradually flowing back to AT&T over time? Is it patent control? Aggressive marketing driving out competitors? The company mentality? What makes AT&T survive getting split up, to being back to its current state and trying to acquire T-mobile now? I'd love any insight you have to share!
