Bookmarked this post. I am willing to bet 100 dollars that when Apple comes out with a touch screen Mac that you completely flip flop and claim its the best thing since sliced bread. Care to take me up on that?

I will only do that if they don't do it stupid like I see HP and others doing, with the damned "flip the screen over so the keyboard is on the OUTSIDE of the "tablet" ".

    "Tent mode" indeed!

But seriously, don't you think that if Apple was going to enter the "convertible" market, they would have done so by now. And besides, they don't want to eviscerate the market for iPads. Apple is VERY conscious to NOT compete with themselves. Haven't you noticed that? Jobs even talked about that in the Keynote where he introduced the iPad.

BTW, in case you didn't know, Apple makes at least 3 "desktop" machine-lines; and one of them is pretty damned powerful, and the other isn't so bad, neither. The third one is the economy model; but for a lot of uses, it does just fine.

So... don't rely on the page breaks. You can use hard breaks, document sections, template formats, etc., and not deal with that issue.

That was the first thing that came to mind for me also. And what expectation can anyone have that brute-force pagination done on desktop MS-Office will be identical to what comes out of Office 365? The font metrics could be entirely different. Especially if the exact same font definitions aren't being used on both.

Someone was looking for an excuse to pitch LO, and the Pagination "issue" was easy to show "the Boss".

    Nice job, Microsoft...

But you are right. A properly designed document should not depend on hard-pagination. Sounds like someone doesn't know how to set up a TOC.

Since Apple is the King of Touch; how many Touch-hybrid Macbook and iMac prototypes do you think are lurking in the Apple Labs? Do you REALLY think they've never generated an internal Touch-based version of OS X?

There is a very good reason why they have kept Touch out of OS X. But use their Trackpads and Mice and you'll see why "their way" is actually better in most cases.

And "Gorilla Arm" is a real thing. Don't believe it? Hold your hand out in front of your chest for about 2 minutes. Even after about 30 seconds it gets to be tiring. It works for Tablets because you don't use them at the same angles as you do a laptop. And imagine owning a Touch-enabled iMac. I used to think I wanted just such a thing; but after experimenting with my (non-touch) monitor, I quickly realized that Apple knows what they're doing in not jumping on the Touch-hybrid bandwagon.

Actually, Apple does have the settings. In OS X, since 10.10, it has been due to Spotlight doing online queries. In iTunes, for many years, it has been due to their suggestions system and retrieving additional data about your music.

It is, as the article suggests, the price of convenience. It would be nice though if you had the option to turn off those conveniences if you don't want them.

There is a Vas Deferens between what Spotlight (for "Spotlight Suggestions") and iTunes does and what Windows 10 is doing. For one thing, Apple is straightforward about what is, and what is not, sent to Apple and/or Microsoft from Spotlight. And more importantly, Apple has a nice, simple GUI way to disable "Spotlight Suggestions".

As far as iTunes goes, if you are referring to the "Genius" feature, unless you turn on iTunes Match, you can disable the Genius feature (which I think is now called "Share details about your library with Apple"). If you are referring to retrieving CD Song Names and other info from the internet, you can disable that, too. Both are available as simple GUI checkboxes in iTunes' Preferences, along with the SWITCHABLE "Share details about your library with Apple", "Limit Ad Tracking", "Automatically download album artwork", "Always check for available downloads", "Sync playback information across devices", "Sync podcase subscriptions and settings", and "check for new software updates automatically".

So, compare that with what TFA says about Windows 10 still leaking data no-matter-what, and I think that any sensible person will agree that there is virtually no comparison between the two "mindsets".

Are Live tiles pinned to your start bar completely independent of user, or do different users have different settings for that? Response times and reactivity are king. Making sure the data is already there when a different user logs on, or when you go to the page to see what's available, is a thing.

Not saying there shouldn't be an easy way to really turn it off, but "no obvious need to poll" is a little disingenuous unless Windows 10 is a truly single-user OS.

Windows 10 (a/k/a NT v?) is actually a server-class multiuser OS, that has been hamstrung by greedy Microsoft Policy into behaving like a one-user-at-a-time OS.

    Sad, actually.

Unlike OS X, which, while also acting sort of like a one-user-at-a-time OS, at least lets you spawn additional simultaneous User Sessions via Remote, if you wish. And even when it is acting like a one-user-at-a-time OS, I believe that the other Users' sessions are kept alive and logged-in, which I'm not sure is the case with Windows "Client" OSes. In fact, I used to use that feature to create an ersatz "iTunes Server", by simply having iTunes (with home-sharing turned on) running in another session. A little cheesy, but it worked pretty well.

The only way I could get my iPhone 6 Plus to last only 6 hours was to do turn-by-turn navigation; which not only cranks up the high-current-draw GPS hardware, but more significantly, wants to keep the backlight lit so you can see the scrolling map.

Otherwise, my iPhone gets about 3 to 4 DAYS of average use. I chatted the other day with some friends on a cellphone call for nearly 6 hours, and it STILL had about 30% left, and IIRC, it only went into that call with about 62% capacity.

You realize you're killing your battery with that quick charger. It's ok once in awhile; but I try to avoid using my car charger with my iPhone, because it gets broiling-hot. And that simply isn't good for the battery. In fact, with ALL battery-types, the slower you charge them, the better.

You must also mange your radios well - only enable Bluetooth and GPS when you need it, otherwise keep them off; toggle mobile data and wifi when you roam which means don't leave wifi on while you leave your residence or workplace, and don't leave either on at night or for extended time. (Yes there is a lag in the morning when you turn on wifi and all the background apps sync at once to get email, messages, updates, etc. but you trade that for longer battery life by not using as many charge cycles.)

Managing both software and hardware is a bitch, but if you spend a bit of time to learn, you can get great battery life and overall performance (less background apps), and enjoy enhanced privacy (block ads, prevent data leaks, don't respond to wifi/BT pings, etc).

Or you can just get an iPhone, and have an OS that knows how to do all that shit for you.

And oh yes, iOS has plenty of Multitasking ability (It's UNIX, FFS!!!). It just knows when to crank it up, and down.

For example, the only thing that sucks battery on my phone is doing turn-by-turn directions, and that's mostly because it wants to keep the backlight on to show you the pretty scrolling map. Otherwise, I get about 3 DAYS of average use from my 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus before it's down to around 25%, and even doing something like streaming Apple Music all day long over WiFi at work only eats about 30-40% of the battery. And in case you haven't noticed, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are pretty damned thin.

So the OS's Battery Management DOES matter, and Android sucks donkey balls in this regard. And in security. And in updates. And...
