I for one would love to have a version of Logic Pro or Photoshop that could put up custom "keytops" on the F-Keys. And if the rumors (probably untrue) about having e-Ink keytops on the REST of the keys are true, then that would be truly unique for a standard keyboard offering.

That's one of the biggest "problems" with Apple, marketing-wise. Not only do their newer designs look almost identical externally to the previous iteration, they also have the somewhat maddening propensity to keep the product-names the same, year-after-year. So it is easy to ignore/forget/miss the fact that the internal design has changed nearly every year.

Now in the case of the Trash Can Mac Pro, I think there might be a legitimate concern about the lack of updates.

Torx screws have been in common use in the automotive (and many other) industries since the 1980s. They are used because they are far superior to Phillips in every conceivable way. You literally can't buy a screwdriver bit set or toolkit that DOESN'T include an assortment of Torx bits. So get over that one, willya?

And the idea that Apple engineers their products for premature failure is laughable. You do realize, of course, that Apple actually has the opposite reputation. And it is well-deserved.

As far as "upgradability" goes, outside of Slashdot, you will find that there isn't one computer-owner in 10,000 that ACTUALLY upgrades their computing hardware "piecemeal". If they have performance issues, they generally just replace the whole thing. Just like you don't "upgrade" the Magnetron in your microwave oven, nor the Display Panel in your TV or Monitor. But nobody seems to worry about those things, even though they represent purchases that cost as much, or sometimes even more, than a computer.

As far as pulling the front glass to service an iMac, it is actually a pretty simple thing. And considering that most people never have to do it, it is a perfectly-adequate access method.

With PCI slots room for multiple video cards and several hard drive bays. You know, a proper workstation.

Proper for you, maybe. Not "proper" for a lot of people.

Last night I was watching a "60 Minutes" report on Apple that they aired last December (yeah, I'm slow on catching-up to my recorded shows. Sue me!). Part of the piece contained an interview with Jony Ive, and a (pretty guarded) peek at some of the people at work in his Design Group. It sure looked like the Workstations they were using with whatever CAD/CAM/CAE Applications they were using (VectorWorks? Inventor? Siemens PLM? Other?) were being run on Trash Can Mac Pros. And they were nicely whipping around some pretty complicated and finely-detailed 3D solid-models on the screen with complete fluidity.

So, apparently, not everyone that needs some workstation-class compute-power and graphics needs a big tower with a bunch of random cards stuffed into it, and a fan that sounds like an airplane takeoff.

  13. The problems that have been announced almost invariably revolve around the connectivity provided in the stadium, rather than the tablets themselves. This is an NFL problem.. iPad, Surface, Galaxy Tab, whatever.. not going to be different until the NFL forces teams and stadiums to provide adequate connectivity.

    That's not necessarily true.

Even if the root-cause is poor connectivity, how the software (and hardware) handles the situation can be GREATLY influenced by the particular device. Perhaps some Slashdotters that own both an iPad and a Surface Pro can weigh in on this...

  14. I mostly see cult like devotion from Apple aficionados, who's typical answer to question "Why did you choose iPhone" typical boils down to "because Apple".

    Are you serious?

I can boil down my choice of iPhone in two words (and I'm REALLY not trolling!) :

    "Because Android".

  15. I really don't get this story, honestly.

Is Apple being a "Cult" for wishing to protect possibly marketable trade secrets that were created by its employees on the company's dime?

Is OCP (didn't they buy-up Detroit?) being a "Cult" for engendering a sense of "loyalty" to an ideological position on technology?

Are the ex-Apple Developers being a "Cult" for expressing solidarity, even if it costs them their jobs?

None of those seem to fit the definition of "Cult-like" behavior.

  16. Let's try to use words with some integrity; bribery is a criminal offence, whereas what Samsung allegedly did was to try to buy the guy's silence, which is merely odious, but not a crime.

Here's the problem with your argument: If there had actually BEEN a word that described this "buying of silence" other than what you are describing is a "term of art" for the "influencing a public official", you would have INCLUDED that word in your pedantic diatribe.

The fact that there is NOT a separate word for "bribe as a tort" (essentially), means that the word "bribe" is used to describe BOTH the CRIMINAL and NON-CRIMINAL acts.

They did? I can just go to an alternate app store and download an app to my phone and run it? I mean, I can do that on my Note 5, nothing else needed! So iOS now allows that, too?

More or less. The "official" way to do so is to use XCode 7 or later. Which means that you will be compiling from Source. Here's a list on github of Open Source iOS Apps. Some (indicated) are also in the App Store, by some are not. By the way, it is also a good way to learn how to code iOS Apps in Swift or ObjC. By the way, you will note that one of the Projects is for VLC, which famously withdrew itself from the iOS App Store.

However, there is also a tool called "Cydia Impactor" for Mac, Linux and Windows. While I don't know much about it, it purports to work to install non-blessed Apps without the need for jailbreaking, nor need for a Mac, nor XCode. It is supposed to be able to Install non-blessed IPA files. Here's an example of installing Moviebox using Impactor.

And now we're past the end of my knowledge on the subject. But it does appear to be as open as say, Linux, at this point, as far as App installation/development goes. No, you still don't have the source to the OS; but you don't have that with any DELIVERED Android version, either.

Apple tore down the walls of its own garden a few YEARS ago, when they started allowing full-blown Sideloading of any ol' iOS App the User wanted.

And why wasn't their an outcry when the headphone manufacturers started putting 3.5 mm plugs on headphones, when a large percentage of audio equipment was still shipping (and some still does!) with 1/4" jacks? Why wasn't THAT seen as "Giving the finger to any semblance of industry standards", when the standard HAD been 1/4" for DECADES? You know why? Because, JUST LIKE APPLE, the headphone manufacturers INCLUDED AN ADAPTER. So, pray tell, how is this ANY different?!?

And don't bring up the ridiculously-overblown bug-boo about "Charging while listening". First off, the iPhone 7 is spec'ed at FORTY HOURS of music-listening time, and the iPhone 7 Plus is rated at SIXTY HOURS. Second, there are about a dozen adapters, some as inexpensive as $10, that allow doing just that.
