  1. High speed? on Washington DC is Most Wired Region in the U.S. · · Score: 1

With all the hoorah about it being the most wired community, I can't help but wonder where the most "wired for HIGH SPEED" community is.

I heard something about (Oswego, Oslo, something like that), KY being heavily wired up, as their cable access is provided by their electic company, who also provides their internet. I know they have, what I consider to be very low ($20 a month) access charges, which probably makes a big difference.

I guess what I'm getting at is, what city uses the most BANDWIDTH. I don't care about how many homes get on the net to check their email, or chat. I wanna know WHERE the most HIGH SPEED GEEKS are.

Besides (and yes, I know all politicians don't live in DC, but I used to live there, and there are quite a few), I'd bet that the same cities that were listed highly in the article are also in the same contention for MOST WIRE-TAPPED... hehe. Oh well.

  2. Interesting point... on Apple Re-Reverses G4 Order Cancellations · · Score: 1

I think it's an interesting point. I really hadn't considered how many *new* users the G4 is attracting. It certainly looks good enough on paper, and even I, PC user that I am, have considered getting one if it delivers it's promises.

I can't help but wonder how many more people are in the same boat as you, and even more die-hard MAC users that also refuse to reorder the system yet again. I can't help but think this is going to do irreperable damage to their ESTABLISHED customer base, as well as the NEW users they had attracted. Oh well, just my thoughts.

  3. Hard to imagine... on Apple Re-Reverses G4 Order Cancellations · · Score: 2

It's hard for me to imagine a company's marketing dept. allowing someone to go public, and change their minds this much in a row. Seems to me, in order for marketing, PR, and other such departments to allow this, there must be some real NASTY delays. Perhaps more than what we're hearing about?

I for one, don't use a MAC, so it's no sweat off my back. However, I can't help but feel for the mass of business owners that had theirs on mass order, awaiting their arrival. Oftentimes, as is happening where I work, companies make plans AROUND the fact and around the date they are to receive new equipment.

Point? Well, don't really have one. But you've got to wonder how many hard core MAC users this is upsetting. Quite obviously, to have something pre-ordered, you either REALLY like what it has to offer, are REALLY devoted to the organization, or simply NEED it BADLY, and very fast.

I'd love to hear from some MAC users, perhaps even some people who had these on pre-order, and get their take on the situation.

  4. Re:Not much to go on... on The Who's Reunion Concert to be Webcast Live! · · Score: 1

Okay, so I was wrong. There apparently IS something of use at the end of the multimedia assault on the pixelon site. (nothing against multimedia, but I prefer to have a choice of bandwidth options.)

I still, however, couldn't find anything related to the WHO. Closest thing being the Spice Girls, and a Will Smith music video broadcast, but still, I didn't check that hard. I was already frustrated enough with the site as it was. Anyway, just wanted to make amends for my rash post earlier, and my impatience.

  5. Not much to go on... on The Who's Reunion Concert to be Webcast Live! · · Score: 2

I read the article, and really, (no offense) but if the authors themselves didn't think enough of it to get a full-page, or even half-page article instead of the blurb that it got, I can't help asking, is it really that important??

Anyway, in an attempt to get more information on the matter, (prepared with my Winbox up here at work, and I do like the WHO.) I went to pixelon.com, which appears to have no more information about it. All I got was a bombardment of Flash animation, and a big commercial before I got fed up with them.

As a side note, how smart is it to market for the "highest end" of technology users. I mean, it was lagging pretty good on the T1 here at work, and I was really disappointed in the way I was _forced_ to view what I considered to be a very small window in FULL SCREEN! How smart is that? I for one think it's stupid to FORCE someone into viewing a window full screen that could easily fit into a 320 screen. Oh well, just my theory.

  6. But what if? on MS Attempt to Find Pirated Software Fails Miserably · · Score: 1

Okay, so what if... (you'll have to imagine here with me now) I use Linux. Let's say, Redhat 5.2, and use that for all that I do with my computer. Let's also say, that I'm a programmer, developing for M$ Windows. Okay? With me so far? Let's also say (keep in mind that all of this is theoretical) that I don't like Windows, wouldn't ever pay for Windows, and don't need Windows to do any of the things that I use my computer for. HOWEVER, (and this is where it gets hairy) I DO need a copy of Windows so that I can code for it, obviously. Would it not make sense, that for me to have a copy of Windows so that I could code for it, thereby propagating the Windows (based) economy, and adding to the (sarcasm)ROBUSTNESS(/sarcasm) of the M$ Windows environment, that it makes sense for me to have a copy for free??? I mean, quite admittedly, I would NEVER pay for a piece of software as bug-riddled, weak, and insecure as M$ Windows is, but still need it to propagate it to its own benefit?

Anyway, just think that it's fair. Maybe I'm just screwed up.

The opinions expressed in this post are not necessarily the opinions of slashdot. Hell, they're not even necessarily the opinions of myself, I assume no liability, and refuse to warrent any truthfulness to this post. -i9mm-

  7. Cheap... that's why.. on MTV Profiles "Hackers" · · Score: 3

Everyone wants to know why MTV is going to do a show on 'hackers'? Cause it's cheap. I don't know if anyone has noticed, but MTV's shows are becoming, by practice, cheap shows. Think about it. Doesn't REALLY cost a whole lot to produce Beavis n Butthead. Marketing and air-time aside, not a whole lot just to produce. B&B were out the door when they got too expensive. Replacement? Sifl n Ollie... c'mon, ya can't get much cheaper than that. (not to say it's not funny tho. cracks me up.) Big shows? Lessee, Real World is a pretty big show right? They take seven people (who they're NOT paying), and stick em in an apartment. What's that cost em? Rent. Road Rules. Kay, I'll grant that a Winnebago probably costs a lot of money, but still, I don't even think that they put gas in it. (or maybe they do, I dunno.) Anyway, that's my take.

  8. Start our own ASME? on No More Suits; IT Worker Shortage Will End Soon · · Score: 1

Why not start our own ASME, or more accurately, ASOME? (with the 'O' being thrown in for "online") Granted, I'm an idiot in the means as to how to do this of course, but I'd say between the editors/posters/readers of Slashdot, we've got enough online pull to get a couple of other big names aboard at least. Once the ball is rolling, who knows???

{include_ps.h)Nice article Rob. Very well written. I think maybe /. oughtta have an "article" section tho maybe? It's not all the time that I wanna read specifically news, and should have some way of distinguishing. The main difference being, articles wouldn't go out of date as quickly. Anyway, guess I'll get back to work now.

  9. Re:Privacy??? on Canadian Post Office Moves Online in a Big Way · · Score: 1

Maybe I stated myself incorrectly. As the victim of a recent robbery, I understand how fragile paper checks are. Yes, I was able to put a stop payment on it, but it was an IRS check, so there's no telling when I'll see it reissued. So, in a lot of ways, I am for this change (even if I show it poorly). If our government were set up similarly, then my account would simply have been credited, thus never needing a check, thus never having had it stolen.

Another aspect of this tho, is how many mailmen are going to lose their jobs to techies? I mean, surely they can't migrate someone from a postal courier position into an email administrator. At least, I hope they can't. Not with my money.

  11. Privacy??? on Canadian Post Office Moves Online in a Big Way · · Score: 2

Okay. First and foremost, I'm just a tad bit confused. Is the only method of online mail delivery related strictly to bills/payments? or does it extend to normal mail. I thought the article rather vague.

If they ARE truly thinking about delivering mail online, then how are they going to get mail online is probably the biggest question. If it's sent online, then it's really no different than email already in place. However, if it is scanned and then sent to the receiver, then that has to be a HUGE breach of privacy. In order for someone to scan, then they must first open right? (Or did I miss an article on how to NOT open mail before reading?)

Also, just out of curiosity, how exactly ARE Canadian residents going to be punished for late payments if the server goes down. Given the proper scenario (ie, server goes down for a week due to Hurricane Gates, and bill was sent online to begin with), then the user positively COULDN'T pay the bill on time, through no fault of their own. I dunno, just seems a little sketchy to me. Not enough paper trail for government work I guess.

Cracking??? Yeah, sounds like fun. Thanks DOJ" type of person. If by some remarkable chance they ever actually DO get to teach someone already involved in either cracking or hacking, there's simply no way in hell some guy in a suit from the DOJ is going to dissuade them. No matter how bad they make it look, or how fun they make the class.. Anyway, told ya it was "less than educated", but there it is. My opinion. -I9mm-
