Well IM sure if you want to do that someone will cater to you.

Oh, sorry you were trying to be a smartass.

Games will have adverts. I don't like it, you don't like it, but I would rather have something innocuous and unobtrusive as opposed to splash screens I have to look at 10 seconds every time I start the game. What is more aggravating, being forced to watch the previews before the movie or the product placements you see in the movie.

A new rating? Maybe a descriptor but not a rating. We already have idiots who are confused by a "mature" or can't be bothered to even look.

The fact is advertising is going to be in games. Unless of course we all just stop buying games... yeah not going to happen. To many people buy sports games from EA for that to happen.

The issue is, advertisers want to put product adds in games, product adds hurt the game unless you have a current day setting, even then its very iffy. The best game ads are innocuous and they promote a brand, not a single product. If I'm walking through a city on an earth that was destroyed in 2014 and see a faded and burnt billboard sitting at and angle half on the ground with an advert for an xbox 1080, I'm not really going to mind, it doesn't look out of place and it fits the time period. If the billboard is clean, bright and shiny.... im gonna be pissed. Who the hell keeps the billboards clean and up to date, don't they have better things to do like scavenging for food?

If I'm traveling between worlds in a space game set in 2231 and I go near a large space station orbiting a heavily populated world (Think Coruscant)and see a coke advert that says "Coke Classic, for that turn of the millennium taste". I wouldn't mind, heck I might even grin a little.

The problem is this, what dev has ever said "you want an advert in out game? Then these are the rules you follow, go talk to your add agency then let us look and we will approve it." If they really want to get that advert near your target audience, then they will do it.

IN game advertising doesn't have to be stupid and forceful. The problem is, that is how it is typically done right now.

Well done in game ads are more effective and less distracting. The next step is for them to lower the price of the games, or give better support/updates/content because of advertising revenue.

Yeah, I know I'm a bit crazy with that last part, it would just be nice to see a bit more benefit trickle down to the consumer.

  6. Re:Don't break it on Boeing's New 787 Wings — Amazingly Flexible · · Score: 1

    ..No.

The nature of public opinion and perception creates an environment that can destroy a well engineered passenger aircraft.

A situation where the wings break would never happen while the plane was actually flying or in a recoverable non flying state.

You test the wing to the theoretical limit of the forces that would occur during a flight, controlled and not so controlled. Then you design the wing for 150% of that or some number like that. Now if it breaks during the normal testing then by all means go back in fix it.

Think of it this way, if any thing on the aircraft was going to break and cause it to crash, the last thing to do so would be the wing.

Nothing good would come of breaking the wing if it does what they claim it does. Also, they do care about passengers, because the continuing safety of the passengers affects their bottom line. If a design flaw in the planes kills passengers, they have to pay for it.

Might I suggest a book for you. Its called airframe. Crichton wrote it.

  7. Don't break it on Boeing's New 787 Wings — Amazingly Flexible · · Score: 5, Insightful

A bit of wisdom from a Retired Boeing exec who I forgot the name of.

The story was about one of the earlier Boeing's, they had stressed the wing to like 10 times any theoretical force that could be possibly placed on it during a rather publicized testing of its strength. They test folks were all about trying to break it.

During the process of doing this an exec asked them what they were doing. "Breaking the wing" they replied.
The exec said No, stop the testing.

    Why? the testers asked.
Because the headline won't read ,

"Boeing wing breaks at 40 times the stress encountered during possible flight conditions",

    Instead it will read

"New wing of new Boeing Jet Breaks".

Please note Its been awhile since I heard that story, but I think the point is pretty clear.
