I'm going to have to take your word for it but I am a mathematician and I don't really think we've got anything that's truly random. We have unpredictable pretty well covered but not true random. That's why most anything is a PRNG or CSRNG. In math we have some unpredictability that appears random, such as the occurrence of the number nine in pi. There's pretty good improbability results from decay - that *might* be random but probably isn't, we're just not able to know why so we still call even that pseudo-random. Maybe I'm missing something? Contrary to popular opinion, I do not know everything.;-) But it seems likely that, with enough time and enough compute power, that if you sent a message to Tim and Tim burned down a house we'd be able to throw out any results that look like the Mona Lisa.
I used to put my two quarters in and play for hours as people would come try to win. Gimme the stand-up and we'll talk. Technically, I have a cabinet and the boards (no screen) and whatnot. However, that's to be a MAME box some day. Errr... I've been saying that for like ten years now. That day doesn't appear to be getting closer.
Sort of true. I mean, yeah, it could turn out to be an effect caused by purple unicorn farts and it would still be dark matter. That's unlikely, and all, but it could happen. Something is causing this effect. Of course, some people seem inclined to not know the difference between dark energy and dark matter but that's a topic for another day.
I am not a physicist. I am a mathematician. I do find it fascinating but it's just a hobby.
Someone will just write a tutorial on how to disable it in their router and, sure enough, it'll keep going. It's gotta be done at the ISP level, I think?
Anyhow, I heard windows are vulnerable to bricks. It sure would be insightful and making a statement to penetration test those windows.
I'm just waiting for someone to pipe up that DM doesn't exist while not actually knowing what DM is. There are a few people who have valid opinions on it but almost all of the ones that I've noticed don't actually know what it is. (It's not really anything too specific yet, but we've got some ideas and some math. It's a placeholder.)
I am just disturbed, disgusted really, by a pillar of the freedom's we enjoy with software is so ready to take other people's freedoms because of his fear. I wonder what he has to say about the government backdooring encryption?
Wait, no I don't. I've since thought about it some more and I'll simply conclude that I was mistaken in my beliefs that he was actually concerned with freedom and I can safely discount anything more he says because he's now suspect. Any time he has fear as a motivation, he'll fall on the side of reductions of freedom. I can not respect that kind of person but I can respect that we have a different interpretation of freedom. So, I'll just ignore him. It won't change donation habits, it won't change how I feel about anyone else, it simply has made it so that I can no longer take him as anything other than a caricature.
I could have sworn that I'd seen some of this discussed and maybe it's never really just clicked. The problem is, I don't have a clue where I read it. It might have been here? It might have been a scholarly work?
Thank you and that confirms that I had thought to understand but can't one still crunch and then look at, systematically, to throw out all probable gibberish and then use machine learning, or similar, to make probable guesses and then keep refining either by human, circumstance, or additional metrics to reduct the probable answers until you can make a few educated guesses?
Of course, that would probably be defeated by making the code gibberish to begin with. Maybe that's what I'm missing? "PINKANDPURPLEGARBONZOBEANS" might not mean anything to you but it makes like five of us giggle like little school girls. (I can not explain, you would not understand, this is not how I am... *nods*)
So is that what I'm missing? 'Cause if the answer is no and the resulting text is "IMGOINGKILLHIM" then someone's eventually gonna figure that out if you've got patience. Unless I'm seriously missing something. I don't care enough (or know enough) to work on this but, it seems pretty likely that they'll still be able to, eventually, figure it out. Even if the phrase translated into 3,12e3 results that were in the appropriate language and with words that make sense, and person A sent a message to person B, and then person B died, well... We should be able to figure that one out.
At risk of sounding pithy, umm... You're gonna need a gun to do that. Many of us firearm owners aren't going to let you just take them. It's going to go really poorly for everyone involved. I hope you're aware of what you're advocating.
Me? I'm a patriot, I spent eight years in the military and even had the misfortune to see combat whilst I served. I'd hate to ever harm a human but, you know, I just might not move and take my firearms with me when I go should you try to take my firearms. I may decide to do my patriotic duty and accept that I may end up on the losing side. Some things are worth fighting and dying for.
One of those things is freedom. Freedom comes with risks. You can have secure or you can have free. Overall violence is trending downward as is firearm related violence. No, I'll take the risks and take freedom. I accept that it may result in my death or harm. I am aware of that risk and you don't get to take my freedom for your cowardice.
On a more personal matter, and unimportant, I've lost all respect for you today. I held you in high esteem and as a pinnacle for freedom, specifically with software but freedom as it is. I see now that this was ignorance on my part. It is both saddening and disappointing, all at the same time. It's actually almost painful to type this out and I may regret it but I'm inclined to say it. I've spent a while typing this and thinking about it... Yeah, I don't think you can earn that respect back. Your fear cowardice is not an excuse to take away my rights.
Stop pissing your panties about a rather minimal number of deaths and injuries and accept that risks happen in a free society. Also, note the trending downward numbers for crimes and shooting crimes in specific. You're just noticing them more due to confirmation bias. Hell, you should have seen Detroit in the 70s and 80s.
I don't see any mass murders at that link. I also don't know why we're discussing this when this is a Sikh child with a charger that someone believed or pretended to be a bomb.
It's odd how quick we are to make judgment on this. I'm inclined to agree, it's Texas and they've been making us look stupid for years, but there might be more to the story that hasn't come out. What you are claiming may not be the case. TFS makes it quite clear that few facts are verifiable at this point.
I mean, yeah, I like a lynch party and all and don't even mind Sikhs at all or anything - and I don't even like cops but, I mean, can't we wait until we've got some facts before starting the torches alight? We should probably prepare them but, you know... Maybe wait to light 'em until we've actually got a reason to be outraged.
I generally wear socks even when in bed in the summer - even when I lived in the south. I've a pretty pointless saying that I use with alarming frequency when someone asks me what I think.
"What do you think?" "I think most people's feet are ugly and there's not a damned thing they can do about it."
I'm not sure where I picked it up or if it's something I've always thought but I've been saying for probably 35+ years. I have no idea if the dress code is the same way but when I was in school I had to wear socks at all times - except on a beach or at the pool. Then, in the Marines, I was *technically* supposed to wear them at the beach. (I'm not exactly sure how we were supposed to swim and we didn't wear them for our swim quals unless they were full dress quals.)
Hmm.... I dunno? I'm used to wearing socks. I've had more than one girlfriend tell me that I'm odd. I take off my socks and wait a while and then I put them on their feet. They tell me to put my socks back on.
Come to think of it, I think we were supposed to wear our socks still in full-dress quals - some of them. One of them was rather silly but effective. You take off your boots (but not your socks) and your pants. Then you can blow your pants up and make a life-preserver out of them. You tied the ends, cinched a belt (maybe? this was a lot of years ago), and then kept blowing into 'em to keep them inflated.
I can't say that I ever found it particularly useful or maintained such a skill. I guess, I could probably go hit the pool and try and figure it out and make a video.:/ I don't think I've brass berries enough to share said video of me spending an hour treading water while figuring it out. It might just come back? Also, I don't think I have any gabardine fabric pants with me.
I don't think that I've maintained many of the skills learned. I'd be really pissed if someone made me dig a foxhole with an e-tool. I own a tractor. I'm sure as hell not using it as an ax. I own a chainsaw. I might kill someone with it but, really, I'd rather not??? I've got better tools. I could probably still manage a bayonet attack if you don't mind me stopping for a smoke along the way. I'm skinny but lazy as all hell now. If I can drive there then we're good, I'll bayonet them then. I'm pretty sure my MCT is still squared away, that seems to stick with you for life. I can still take out target after target from a prone position. I can drive, that was my MOS for quite a while. But I don't think I can turn my pants into a flotation device.
No it isn't. Someone would have emailed me. I go almost every year and I'm not even "in the business." I just find it interesting. I play, "Spot the Fed." Actually, I've missed the last two but, still... I'll be attending this year, missus can stay home or come with me or do whatever. I'm still going. I will not be attending CES this year but that's because I already wasn't planning on attending. I've not been for a few years as it's not that important to me.
I am a Libertarian, not a Randian, and I've sent money to Sanders' campaign fund. However, I'm far to the left of most (all?) elected Democrats but for very different reasons.
I believe the theory is that one-time-pads can be broken, eventually, by throwing enough at them until they stop spitting back gibberish. It's just a long and complex process. At least that's my understanding. I'm a mathematician and even I get confused with cryptography. I understand that certain letters are also used more frequently so that they can tune things to get a slightly quicker result but that it is still a lot of compute power.
I dunno but I'm pretty sure Mao is dead. Other than that, spot on. I'm just hoping it wasn't knowing collusion with Juniper 'cause I'm kind of a fan and it would make me sad. They really should do a checksum type of thing before rolling that shit out. I'm hoping that it could have (should have?) been caught with a bit of oversight.
I was so excited to get off Cisco gear and onto Juniper (way back, a very long time ago and in a galaxy far away, namely - North Carolina) and the savings were so lovely. I was able to resell our kit and almost pay for the Juniper gear. And, oh, even *I* could figure out how to use it. We didn't fire our CCNA but we did move him into a slightly more productive role - he did more than manage networks after that. He was up to speed with Juniper before their reps left the building. He was then able to do a few other things with his spare time as we had, at that point, three satellite offices (eventually we had two more).
I've been a Juniper fan ever since. Not quite fanboy at the level of a Mac fan (yes, I had to mention that 'cause, you know) but a fan nonetheless. I've spoken with people and they've gone ahead and moved off of Cisco kit where they could. I didn't, personally, do much of anything with it but I know we got the entire functionality, easier, at a price point that's far less than it would have cost with Cisco. I do think we did end up with some failing hardware but it was still replaced and we had enough to have some redundancy in place.
God, I don't even know when that was that we had a Juniper rep come visit for the first time. Even our CCNA was impressed. (Or was he a CCNE???) I don't know but if you've ever compared the prices then, well, let's just say when you're rolling out a remote office you can literally save many, many thousands of dollars. It is true that you get what you pay for but they were good enough and did just fine for our needs. (Kind of like MySQL worked well enough to not give Oracle any money, I hate Oracle but that's a story for another day.)
To the point!!!
This is disheartening and unfortunate. It is not unexpected, however. They were the underdog when we bumped into them. I'm a pretty geeky guy and I'd never heard of them until getting a cold call and opting to call the number back as the timing was rather convenient. I imagine it's a larger company now and that they've got more holes in 'em than they used to - including hiring someone from a TLA. I'll be interested in finding out how this happened. I can only hope that they release that information and that it was not done as corporate policy. If it turns out it was corporate policy then I will be sad. Anyhow, I'm going to *guess* that I bumped into 'em in 2001-2002 range? I've no idea but that *feels* about right.
Heh... It has all sorts of funny and incorrect information (which is not its fault). I'm using a VPN and I'm connected by VNC to my home in Maine, and I'm using a VPN from there. (It's a long story, boredom was a big part in that choice.) But, I have a connection at my place here so I guess I can stop connecting to my home. Of course, the few computers that I had here are horribly out of date and the house cleaners didn't quite get everything ready for me in time (my fault) and now I have my doggy back with me. So, I'll get to getting these squared away...
Anyhow, to get to my point, the test there was kind of nice. I enjoyed it, thanks. I'll check into their paid service after I see how well it works on Linux and when I get the time. It takes a few days to get a whole separate house up to speed. Add in a new lady friend, a dog and his human friend who rode down on the plane with him, and it gets hectic. I did download the.deb file and I made it a point to save it locally and at the remote site.
In other words, if you're the owner of this site - then you may have made a sale. I'm usually spam averse but I do, at times, enjoy topical ads. If you are the owner then, for better or worse, I'd actually probably buy the product outright today (with less testing) as a backup had you simply disclosed that you were. Dunno if you're the owner or not but I figure I'll add that as it's topical and important to me.
I'm going to have to take your word for it but I am a mathematician and I don't really think we've got anything that's truly random. We have unpredictable pretty well covered but not true random. Oh, it's almost a certainty that it will happen again. Yes. I'll check back in a while and see. Maybe, just maybe, it will have been prevented.
Someone will just write a tutorial on how to disable it in their router and, sure enough, it'll keep going. It's gotta be done at the ISP level, I think?

Open Thunderbird and do a plug-in search for enigmail.
