It looks like these items (from following a few links posted in the thread) are not - in fact, taken as civil forfeiture or as ill gotten gains but are from judgments handed down with due process. Hmm... I don't know if it's possible to be sure but it looks like there is some information attached. Heh. Maybe I can buy some stuff and not feel like I'm contributing to the process.
(I felt obligated to make this clear, my first post was under the impression that that's what it was - given the summary and I sure as hell didn't read the article or do one iota of research.)
That's included too, as far as I know. I've seen lots of nice stuff - at great prices. I will not buy them. I will not contribute to this, I find it abhorrent. You go to prison as punishment, not to be punished. If they can prove they are ill-gotten gains then the funds should go towards the reparation or rehabilitation but that aspect seems to be lacking. "Oh, no receipt? Well, we'll just be taking this." There's no real due process there and, as such, it's deplorable.
I can buy lots of this stuff - some of it is nice. I don't. I won't. *sighs* Someone else will but it does make me feel good to not contribute.
The people who complain loudest about Microsoft don't buy Microsoft products. The people who complain most about Apple don't use Apple products. The people who complain most about Linux don't use Linux.
I may be noticing a trend - one might even call it trendy.
Aside: Some systemd users are really vocal about using it and not wanting to use it.
So, there are some exceptions (like game console owners who don't appear to ever be happy but buy regardless of their complaints) but it's seemingly true that the loudest complainers are not the target market but feel obligated to bloviate as though they *should* be the targeted group. It might be entitlement, it might be ego, I don't know - I'm not an expert. 'Tis just an observation.
It's not a loss of personal information, it's just a copy of the information and information wants to be free. Once you have a thought and share it, it is no longer your's. It belongs to everybody. You don't own information.
(Yes, yes I am kidding - but, well, it's an interesting line of thought to see if anyone will actually defend this as such.)
Conclusion: This material should be covered under copyright laws and should not be able to be willed away by the parent of a child by something so trivial as a EULA.
They seemed genuinely interested and asked because they didn't seem to know a whole lot either - enough to email me for it. There's a HUGE amount of data to digest and process. I kind of want to get some source material, build out something close to spec (I've got time), and run some of these models myself. The data is scattered around, all over the place, and my contacts with the journals haven't been forthcoming. I'm likely to pay for some papers out of curiosity or wait until I'm home and have the University access.
Hmm... New thought... I know some admins at the Uni. Maybe I can get access from them.
We're geeks and nerds. We don't get out much. We kind of expect everything to increase at a rate similar to Moore's Law and anything less means there's a conspiracy (involving one of two major US political parties or secret organizations). Once in a while, we're right! We then tout this out proudly as a means to show our wit and insight - also to validate any other theories we might have.
Personally? I'm pretty sure we'd have better battery tech but we don't really understand it as well as we pretend we do. That's because the tech is handed down, at a controlled rate, by aliens who live among us but have secret bases in the oceans. Some of those aliens can shape-change and appear as humans (if you're careful, you can tell the difference between some of them but they're getting better at it) and they've been controlling humans as a controlled scientific experiment since the dawn of written history (which isn't all of our history, mind you).
I should also add, that written history and archaeological "evidence" is also, frequently, planted. Presumably, they want to be able to feed us controlled stimuli and see the results in a timely fashion thus we're enabled to "discover" certain things as they wish to acquire new data. It's likely because we'll be used as a proxy war with another alien race at some time in the future.
Want some evidence? Obama... I bet you never heard of him before his senate race, right? Yeah, I thought so. There was a real Obama but he died in a car accident and was replaced by an alien who assumed his likeness.
And that's why we don't have the battery technology we're deserving.
It's funny how we criticize terrorists for hiding behind a wall of children and using them as shields. I wonder how much manipulation has been done here.:/ Ah well...
I do have a few reports to read - I'm trying to learn more about this global science thing so I can more accurately opine on the mathematics in use but there's a lot to digest and, frankly, I'm a bit disappointed in the maths involved. There is not only not one standard, they appear fond of not publishing what they tried before reaching their results. It is greatly beneficial to see what was tried and failed or, in my case, what the results were that they considered failing and then what changes to data or modeling were chosen as well as why. I'm not sure if I don't have access to this or if it's not published anywhere.
There are a myriad of models in use, some of which I'm familiar with conceptually, but they've all got their own individual tweaks (as they should) but something isn't adding up - alas, I don't have the domain knowledge to spot it yet. It's chaotic and a lot to figure out. I may have bitten off more than I can chew but I am being entertained and learning stuff.
Oddly, it was a Slashdot poster who gave me this challenge. Heh... I thought it would be a little quicker but there's a lot and I'd really dislike giving a poor reply to a question posted seemingly without bias and with a scholarly intent.
At his age, I had all the answers. I was also witty, insightful, and never wrong. Oh, I was devilishly handsome and my philosophical works were fantastic and original. So, you do have a point.
Also, I was wrong. Well, except for the devilishly handsome bit.
Yet you stated such in a civil way... IOW, I disagree. You can have decent, thought-provoking, insightful, and original thought in a civil manner. It takes effort and the parties should all be civil but, it's certainly feasible. For that matter, I've had lots of it - with people I didn't agree with. But, yes, you must put the effort into it and the other participant(s) be receptive of such.
I will not use a system (for conversation, this sort of site - as an example) that does not allow me to sort (oldest first), thread (oldest first - still), show all (-1, here), and allow me to have a metric ton (preferably all) comments loaded at once. I read. I read a lot - an unhealthy amount, really. Since the days of yore, I've read comments at various sites. This system works for me.
Sometimes the longer and more involved topics can make threading difficult but Slashdot deals with this nicely with a link to the parent post. I don't want to click next page, that breaks threading. I like clear breaks to show me where the threaded comments start and end (the lines on the left are nice). I do tend to like AJAXy stuff that inserts new comments as they're added - there's that. Highlighting new messages is another feature along that bent that I like.
I've not been to DEFCON in a while, three years ago actually, is "Spot the Fed" still a thing? One year a few of us made an effort to get 'em all in photos without being noticed and we'd compare and contrast and had special names for 'em. I don't remember the points value we had but we'd made a bit of a drunk-game out of it.
You'll want an image file that's compiled to work with the Atom, I am pretty sure. ISTR they call *some* variants "linuxium" and that should get you started in a search engine. You probably won't find the short-term builds, compiling everything is a long process, but the LTS is likely an option.
That? Oh, it's my stalker. Don't mind them. I kind of admire the attention and the ability to control them. If they waste their mod points on me then, by all means, they're just wasted - I've got karma boost enabled just to spite 'em and 'cause I like poking things that think they're important. They used to get five mod points but now they get three. I assume they've been whacked with meta-moderation and it will be a sad day when their mod points are no more and they'll need to resort to going back to telling me to go away. (They really do hate my off-topic novellas which I'm certainly guilty of and take great pleasure in writing - and some find them amusing/insightful.)
Anyhow, it's not really a big deal and I don't mind. It gives them something harmful to do. On the other hand, if they can encapsulate this idea as an emoji then I'll be impressed.
You should probably do it while naked, cold, hungry, and being beaten every time a verbose compiler flags an error. You should learn to code as if your life depends on it. Except no substitutes!
This is my Hello World. There are many like it but this one is mine. Without my Hello World, I am useless. Without me, my Hello World is useless.
Alternatively, you can get out of education what you put into it.

Fuck the trophies, how much for the house?

An observation about your complaint comment;
The people who complain loudest about Microsoft don't buy Microsoft products.
The people who complain most about Apple don't use Apple products.
The people who complain most about Linux don't use Linux.

Presumably someone is and, I suppose, therein lies the root of the complaints.

And I don't use them - I do use AU which is part of SO/SE.

Pfft... We're proud of the fact that we're not even regularly literate.
I should probably be tied to the post and lashed. Usually I'd pay extra for that.
SO is not for conversation. ;-)

That is only because you've never seen Emo's skit:

If you coded at Microsoft then you'd have had access to the MSDN library on CD/DVD or installed locally.

I wonder if they own any power companies? I must confess, I like the movie more than the comic.
Nah, I clicked your link. It says "AR-RAHMAN" on it. That's Arabic for "Our Ramen." It's a prayer to FSM.
