Ah good. It was on the news while I was there last. I'd come in through Canberra and gone down that way. The first time I came in through Melbourne. It's kind of strange but interesting in Australia. Everything was pretty much deadly or straight up evil.

After I left the second time the chick I'd been there to visit was on her way to a coffee shop where she worked. While she was walking to work a magpie straight kicked her ass - damaged her face a bit though I guess the scars buffed out over time. I have since come to understand (but haven't returned to visit) that magpies regularly assault postal delivery workers as well. This is, I am told, regular enough to where some carry sticks on their route just to thwart the magpies.

I'm reasonably tough, I suppose. However, I'm not stupid. I don't think I'd want to live somewhere that the entirety of nature is constantly plotting new and interesting ways to kill me. Anyhow, the second trip was nice. I rented a "Ute." I drove from Victoria all the way to the tippy top of the country. I forget the name of the peninsula but you drive through a wildlife preserve to get there. There are some old, very old, roads where they still have telegraph poles and there was some history in a guide book about the poles and lines. I'm pretty sure they were no longer active but it was an awesome drive.

There had been a fire in the preserve not that much prior to my journey but it was still beautiful and there were still lots of critters to see including some nifty colored snakes and lizards. Being neither suicidal nor an expert, I generally observed all wildlife from a distance.

Somewhere, on this thing we call the internet, should be a pile of pictures that I'd uploaded so that some forum members could see them. I imagine Google knows where they are as I've long since forgotten. I've never really been a big fan of pictures, I prefer to store things in my head.

Thanks. It was awesome. It truly was. It was an epic failure, in today's nomenclature, but that they actually allowed someone to act out on that idea - to experiment, as it were, is beautiful. Some of the best inventions are originally tasked with taking the lives of other humans in new and creative ways. I'm, by no means, a fan of violence or of war. However, it sure looks like there are some very fun times to be had and there are often some great inventions that come out of conflicts. Sometimes I wonder if a tranquil society will be a stagnant society.

Anyhow, one of the beauties of Slashdot (and other parts of the internet) is that there's almost always someone who knows what I'm talking about and can fill in the details. As I mentioned earlier, I don't watch these things or read about these things to learn but as passive entertainment. It's just what I enjoy watching and reading. I don't really know why - I mean I do learn a great deal but I only keep the basics stored.

I think maybe it's like keeping the data in RAM while caching the rest. Eventually the cache gets dumped to backup, eventually to tape, and eventually discarded. However, there's usually a remaining unique identifier in cache that enables one to recreate the information with little effort or with the help of others. The communications on the internet are one of those ways.

I'm somehow reminded of an image I saw of a "Yahoo! Answers" post. Someone asked, "What song is this? It goes boom dum dum dummm dum duuumm da dum dum." Someone piped up with, "Great White's, ____________." I'm not sure if it was the real answer but the person accepted the answer and I want to believe. I'm, obviously, the person asking the retarded question.

I do. I do indeed. I love it. On very, very, rare occasions you can find me smoking a pipe that doesn't contain marijuana. I inhale that too.

I love the burst of cigar smoke in my lungs. It doesn't make me cough or anything and it tastes great. I used to like a fine cigar with rum and would sometimes dip the end in my rum (not the lit end, silly goose). Then I realized I was wasting good rum and ruining a cigar that I'd spent like $10+ on, sometimes much more than that.

I live quite a bit north of there but there's a tobacco store in Farmington, Maine. It's right off Route 2 - nice place. And they have a nice, humidity controlled, cigar section. Even better is when I can make it down to their store in Augusta - they have a walk-in humidor. It is as awesome as it sounds. I've actually considered turning a room in my house into one but I'm just not that picky.

I do have a portable humidor and it's pretty good sized. I take it with me when I travel - it's with me right now. I've decided to stay in Buffalo another night but I have to change rooms as it seems this room is promised to a couple who have some sort of sentimental attachment to this room. I am probably going to stay another night as well - I've got my reasoning.

But, yes, yes I do inhale cigar smoke. I know of some who do not. I don't really understand that. That would be like eating fat-free ice cream or drinking alcohol-free beer or decaffeinated coffee.

As an aside (like that's ever bothered me before) the Cubans do make a good cigar but I really don't rank it up there with the 'best' - at least not those that I've tried. No, I've smoked them but that was just because they were illegal and then because I could. It was a matter of the experience and not the quality. They're not bad, not by any means, but they're not the best. I'm not sure if I could say what I think is the best (and often price is secondary, some of the more expensive taste like ass and you get more consistency with a major commercial label) but I can firmly assert that it is not any specific Cuban that I'm aware of. Too bad, too. I like Cuba. I wish I liked their cigars more.

Umm... Assuming a proper emergency plan is in place (a big assumption) and that it is followed you certainly can have someone directing without knowing the larger events - so long as they all follow a set of rules for a given situation. Whilst my career was largely based on vehicular traffic we did expand into pedestrian traffic modeling as well - compute resources advanced and made this realistic. So, while it's an appeal to authority I do submit that I am an authority. Albeit a tired one.

Basically, you have trained staff with a set of criteria - if this happens direct traffic this way and in this manner. If shit hits the fan don't run for the hills, direct traffic towards unknown emergency exits or ignored emergency exits.

Now, in a true catastrophe this isn't going to be 100% effective - it never is. There is nothing to be done about that. However, proper policies and throughput designs can, and has, saved lives in the exact situation you seem to be discounting. If the event staff know how to manage traffic and where to direct it then they needn't know the entire scope of the disaster to affect the outcome.

I'm tired so, please, forgive me for being short. Hopefully that is neither condescending nor inarticulate.
