  1. Re:the easiest way to stop nuclear aggressors on Forget Hashtag Activism: a Millennial's Guide To Nuclear Weapons Realism · · Score: 1

It took me a moment to find your most recent post - I'd neglected to add you previously. I'm not sure if you recall a conversation we had (about selling my business, having some access to capital, relationships, life changes, expectations, the universe, etc.) but I figured I'd find some way to drop you a line and say that I've found a way to act on your suggestion - to some extent. I am out doing my wanderlust thing again (I do this every couple of years, or so it seems) and I'm just driving around at random. I am in Buffalo, NY, and traipsing along with absolutely no goals or destination. I have no designated time to return. I have nobody specific to meet.

I am just going where the road leads and, if life should grant me interesting choices then I'll make those choices when I come to them. I am not, specifically, searching for anything - when asked I am simply seeking to discover real America and where I belong in it. My journey brings me to places where I have not been and to to places where I have been many times already.

The goal is not to meet someone or anything like that. The goal is just to be out there. I left the RV at home and I'm not even staying in particularly nice hotels. In fact, I'm in an EconoLodge on the outskirts of Buffalo at the moment, not far from the arena, and went to Niagara yesterday. Who knows? Maybe I'll meet some hitchhiker that is meandering the globe or country and headed exactly nowhere - just like I? Maybe I'll stumble into someone at a club, bar, a diner? *shrugs*

It would probably be easier if I drank but I'm not wiling to go down that road. If I drank then I'd be able to enjoy the time spent in bars or clubs more. So far, I've gone to a couple and met some interesting people but I've not actually met anyone that piques my interests enough to stick around. I'm thinking that I should spend more time in libraries and the likes. I'm really not suited for bars and clubs.

I did limit myself to packing only two suits. The rest of the time I'm in reasonably casual clothing. That way, I at least look fairly normal. I think a reasonable summary might be that we all have issues of some type. In my case, strange as it may sound, finding someone that's reasonably trustworthy could be difficult. I don't feel I'm being dishonest. I've not made anyone think anything that is not true nor have I been dishonest with anyone.

Anyhow, I figured I'd say hello and update you. It's a strange thing for strangers to be doing on Slashdot but I've done stranger. Life is too short to be worried about conventions and, quite frankly, I'm not exactly doing anything better with my time. So, we'll see where it goes from here. Having no specific goals, I really don't, means I'm not expecting anything so it will be nearly impossible for me to be let down.

If something interesting or amusing does happen then, well, life is good. If not then I have a place in Henderson and can just go up and buy a hooker.

Finally, as always, I'm enjoying the drive. I do this whole "wanderlust thing" fairly often and have since my youth. Whilst I miss the comforts of home, the familiarity, there's something equally familiar about going nowhere and sleeping in random hotels. I'm thinking that I may seek a nice tourist area that is mostly shut down due to the season being slow. Perhaps I'll seek a nice bed and breakfast or rent a small cottage and hang around for a while.

I am thinking of something along the lines of a small town with a general store that has a hardware store attached, a diner, a small bar, and plenty of broadband. I can stay for a week or two and see what local culture rubs off on me and meet new and interesting people.

So, thanks. We'll see where it goes from here. The ubiquity of the internet has made life so much more simple. The geek in me is insisting on connecting through my own desktop, many miles away, to ensure that I've truly got a reasonably secure connection. I'm playing with varied apps on my phone, things I'd never do at home. I've also found myself opening up an IDE at night and tweaking and poking - things I've not done in ages. Life is good, no? Alas, we've all got our problems.

I like the way you think. I really do. Which made me think of an answer to this non-question.

The answer is no, we don't need special regulation. What we need are intelligent and informed persons. Eventually, and this doesn't discount closed source, we could have open and interoperability-built standards that are published, vetted, and agreed on - or at least published and open. The idea being that, yeah, smart people would select to use such instead of insisting on reliance on closed and mysterious. This doesn't mean that the code, itself, can't be proprietary but the communications methods that it uses should be - they should be open, available, and free to use, even for commercial means. In this case, using this example, I'd suggest relying on the standards IPv6 and TCP/IP (or UDP, if applicable - does UDP support error correction?).

If there's any benefit to this new, proprietary, communication format then, by all means, share it with the world so that it can be reviewed, improved on, standardized, and benefit others. It's not like it will do anything more than help the company's bottom line to do so. If anything, it will increase their visibility and market share. Perhaps, I guess, they could license it for commercial use but, honestly, I don't think that will help. If anything, and this is important to me - at least, it's a municipal project (from the looks of things) and thus it should be open.

The summary mentions that it will be hacked, and it will be, so having other companies that can layer on security (if needed) or perform repairs prevents lock in and price gouging. There's a vested interest, from the people, to insist that these types of things remain open and rely on commonly accepted (i.e. standardized even if unratified and informally) and readily available information. Should this company go out of business then the tax payer will have to keep them afloat just to insure they can read electrical usage meters? Surely you jest... When a security flaw is discovered, and it will be, who is going to repair it and how much is it going to cost? Truly, I can think of no benefit to this being proprietary but, perhaps, I'm missing something.

Ah well... I should be sleeping, though I've called the desk and have paid for another night so I'll not have to be out of the hotel by 10:00 in the morning. What an ungodly hour to insist that I check out. I'll be in Buffalo for another night and that means I get to spend a little bit of time online. Yay...

I'm not really using the desktop, I guess, but am connected via VNC and using the desktop remotely (I'm on hiatus/wanderlust for an undetermined duration and want to maintain my own encrypted connection and I like this route).

I guess my point is that, yeah, as I save fewer and fewer things (I often don't even use the OS that is installed but just poke around with a Live USB/DVD/CD - usually the former) anywhere and I'm more a passive consumer, I really have, sort of, replaced HDD/SSDs with RAM. I might save a document, not often enough to matter. I usually don't even save many of those locally. Those get saved on a NAS that gets backed up to HDDs and, eventually, to SSDs that sit off-site and on-site in a backup scheme that a friend and I utilize. It's all automated and I don't really touch anything.

To be frank, I'd really kind of sort of like to get back into using Remote Profiles. I don't use many Windows products (not any at the moment) but, honestly, it was easier for me to do with Windows. It's nice to just be able to have the compute power to be able to do things locally but also have the availability of a remote profile.

    I digress...

Anyhow, in some ways, I have actually begun using RAM as my HDD. I know, it's pretty hybrid as I'm still loading the OS into RAM from a disk drive but it stays that way. Hell, I've got enough RAM that I no longer even bother with a /swap at all. I've yet to have any issues though, again, I am a much more passive user than I once was. A proper suspend state means that I don't even have to worry about keeping the USB drive in place. I've got enough RAM to throw at the problem. (I've never had this much compute power, these many resources, so readily available - my desktop that I'm connected through has more resources than many servers that I've used.)

I usually pay a handsome sum for the various snacks and they make a fresh thing of popcorn before they leave. The owner, his wife, or the manager will generally participate in the event. I'd say I average a month or two between visits. I am 100% certain I could set up and record. I am also certain I needn't pay but I feel obligated to. We do clean up after ourselves and have even helped staff clean up other parts of the theater so they could leave early. Under no circumstances would I record the movie even if I could get away with it.

In hindsight, I'm sure this is illegal as all hell (though he 'sells' us tickets - it's sure to break the contract which is likely a civil (or even criminal) offense. So, because of that - and that there's but one theater in that town, I've redacted the name of the theater. I've even 'sneaked' in the night before a new release was going to be shown and there were people already in line. I just walked in with the employees and a few of my friends went in with me. I don't feel bad, really, but it was kind of mean. I'm sure the agency that he gets the films for would be really pissed if they knew - so, yeah, that's the main reason for the redaction I guess.

I've thought about doing a remodel and having a screening room put in - you can actually get a license to get the full movies while they're still in the theaters though it's a bit pricey. I'm not that much of a movie buff and it's more an event than anything. I think I'd not use it much if it were in my home.

I tend to travel a little and one of the silly things I do is watch local television even though I don't really watch it here at home. I'm not sure what made the show seem similar, to be honest, as Lilyhammer is about a gang and the other is about a detective. I think it was the writing style.

Anyhow, I caught Lilyhammer in Norway, as I recall, and later found it had popped up on Netflix and watched a few more episodes. It's not a bad show at all. I wish I could remember the name of the other show... You might like it. *sighs* I don't know if you're from Norway or not but, if you are, you have a very beautiful country. I spent most of my time, during both trips, in a rented RV just traveling around and hitting the various quiet places while occasionally staying in an inn or a hotel. As I attempt to ski, badly, and do a little snowboarding it was a really nice place to visit and I got to watch a neat snowboarding competition whose name has also been lost to the fog of an addled brain.

Some of those streams looked like they'd make great places to fish but I have put exactly zero effort into learning about this so I have no idea what I'd be fishing for.
