  1. Thanks. I really didn't/don't have the patience to respond today. He's otherwise intelligent. I have no idea what the hell went wrong with their education.

I really don't think they understand the scope of WWII. The war did not work like that - nor would it have. Ah well... Your rebuttal is +1 in my eyes. (I gots me a friend modifier turned on.)

  2. LOL Everyone wants a simple answer and someone to blame. They really do. And there isn't one. Life is never so binary. The place was a horrific mess and, frankly, the nukes really didn't cause nearly the damage folks seem to think they did. It's important to note, there are people still living there today.

The things is, I'm old. I grew up on the Allied propaganda. Hell, I even served in the Marines and if you aren't familiar with them - let's just say we're keen on history. I've since learned a lot of truths. One of the truths I have not learned is that I can fault the choice to drop the bombs. There has not yet anything come to light that would make me even second guess that choice.

Of all the folks here, I'm probably one of the few to have the misfortune of seeing and participating in combat. I know what (sort of) it's like to be in a position where your actions will result in a loss of life. I regret that we're humans but I can not fault the choice to drop the bombs nor do I have any regret that my country did so.

Lots of people say, "America is the only country to do something so terrible!" To which I say, "Japan is the only country that has deserved it." I implore them to let that sink in.

  3. We can speculate all we want but it does us no good. It's one of the reasons I tire of the discussion with otherwise intelligent people. (No, not you - see thread for examples.) Unconditional surrender means just that. In the end, we decided it would help keep the population in check by retaining the Emperor. Truth is, it was probably *fewer* lives lost with the war ending the way it did than it would have been without the bomb.

And yes, the Emperor notes learning about the bombs and those having an impact on his choice - see said recommended documentary if you're needing a citation. I think most people just want simple answers. There aren't any.

Well no... There is one. War sucks.

    A *what* Porsche?
What year did you do it in?
What line did you take when heading into Adenauer Forst - assuming you were really in a Porsche (you know, a bit of a blind chicane on the Nordschleife) and what gear where did you enter in for your PB? (Hint: I've driven a Porsche at Nurburgring - technically two of them. I'll know if you're lying.)

And for bonus points... Name the defining features of said chicane.

Heh... I don't know what to say but I'm compelled to say something. I'm actually sitting here pondering the words to write, for another email, as I'm a huge fan of PAS (physician assisted suicide) and the right to end one's life with dignity.

My email is likely not to be completed but involves my not returning and running for State Senate - as I've hinted in the past. Reason is, it has come to pass, that I've a sibling who is going to simply stop using her TPN and enter hospice care. It's not easy to cope with but a decision that you accept and respect. One might even say that it takes greater courage. The expected date of refusal of care is the 1st of the month. It would appear that it can actually take quite a while. So, I'll need to be there. Meh, I hate politics anyways.

Still, the gist is this and I'm not too articulate, we *do* need the right to end our lives with decency and dignity and damn the bastards that make it difficult. Heh... I've still ample time to change my mind (Maine is not, shall we say, a highly motivated State in some regards) but I'm quite likely to be a wreck for a while. Still, hard as it can be, one has to respect that choice and, indeed, admire that courage.

As an actual automotive aficionado, with a fair collection of automobiles, I will say that I was quite fond of the show but only binge watched it. I'd do the entire season at once (once that became an option). I enjoyed the presenters. I also enjoyed the older version - I seem to recall it was from the 70s or 80s. That was a bit more technical and I preferred that information density but I admit that I enjoyed the antics of the newer show more.

Which is saying something - I'm not a television watcher. I've never really been big on it so I never got into the shows very much. I'm sure I missed many seasons. I did notice that they put the presenters under a great deal of stress. I'm not surprised that one lashed out and hit someone - I do not condone it, but I understand.

I have seen bits and pieces of an American version and it wasn't as bad as I'd expected. I understand there's a German version. And, for the record, as near as I know - I did not beat Jeremy's time when I went and played at the Nurburgring. Well, I certainly beat his van time. But, IIRC, he had an excellent (near record for the vehicle) Jag time. Even though I rented a few exotics, I'm reasonably sure that I did not beat his time.

As an aside, going and taking in-class and then in-seat lessons before renting and driving the ring was excellent. It's really not a tough track - it's just hard to memorize and there's a bit of variation depending on your line. Well, to be fair, there's more than one track. None are terribly difficult and I imagine just getting in there to practice for a few weeks would get someone up to speed - even if they'd never driven on-track in their lives. The crazy ones are the ones on motorcycles.
