In other industries one would say that a product which fails and potentially kills people just because someone turns on wifi or a cellphone was flawed by design and make the manufacturer pay to fix it. Don't get me wrong, I understand why planes weren't being made to deal with now current electronics 30 years ago. I even understand that it would be have been to expensive to immediately upgrade or scrap the then current airplane fleets as cellphones became popular.
But.. the FAA should have told manufacturers they wouldn't be approving any more planes or airplane equipment that isn't secured against interference at least 15 years ago! Actually, I think I am being very generous by saying only 15.
I know, it's the FAA. If you could make a plane from flakes of rock and sharpened sticks... I bet those guys would be all for it.
They are ordering that a manufacturer actually do something to make it's product safe rather than just ban wifi? It's not April 1st! Where did this new FAA come from?

What's wrong with calling Tesla a "fringe brand". Sorry but if you can afford a Tesla you ARE on the fringe!
I don't think that really says anything bad about Tesla itself. Any new car company in the US that can survive as long as Tesla has in the face of the big three has nothing to be ashamed of. The fact that the cars are relatively expensive.. of course they are! They aren't as mass produced as other cars are! Now if Tesla manages to get their cars to a point where they are no longer fringe and a regular person can and is likely to purchase one... that would be awesome! Even if they never get that far, even if Tesla closed up shop tonight I'd say lasting this long in the face of super entrenched and government supported incumbents was a good accomplishment.

I think sometimes new languages are being presented a a 'cure' to bad programming. new language constructs and rules are designed to try to force a bad coder to be a good one. As a result we get an endless churning of languages obsoleting old code and making more work for programmers to keep up to date. And yet.. in the end it doesn't even work. Bad programmers still find a way to write bad code. There is no cure for a bad programmer except to realize that they are one and make an effort to learn to do better or just quit.
Now that the Democrats have pretty much turned into Republicans who else is there? If you think our two main parties are bad have you ever looked at our third parties? At voting time we pretty much get to chose between plain self-serving evil and batshit crazy evil.
I think it depends more on the coder. Spaghetti code can be written in any language. Good, readable code can be written in almost any language (not sure about Brainfuck). Some languages go farther to force the user to write good code than others but it's still a choice.
Wireless will never have the same potential for bandwidth that wired internet access has. It's up to the wired providers to actually implement enough bandwidth that wireless can't keep up. Given the shitty near monopoly incumbent cable operators we have in the US there very well could be faster wireless providers.
Cities also tend to be dirtier. They are dangerous with high amounts of crime. They discourage innovation as there is little room for building things. They have nosy neighbors who try to mandate what you can do in your own home.

No, no it doesn't. Governments throughout history have proven that people given power without acountability will be corupted and do bad things with it. That's why we have laws mandating things like trials in order to imprison people. Now our wonderful leaders have found a way to side-step these protections. Even if they really did this just to protect us from the truly bad people I see no reason to believe that our current set of leaders are somehow better than ever other person who ever had the power to "disappear people" without accountability. Surely they have or will abuse this new power and put someone in there that doesn't belong.
They weren't trying to correlate intelligence with genes. They were trying to correlate educational attainment with genes. That is not the same thing. People don't always apply their full intelligence towards school. Also, doing well and going far in school doesn't prove much about one's intelligence. It proves one can remember facts long enough to regurgitate them in a test. I suppose that is a kind of intelligence but there is much more to it than that! I think that having an analytical mind and actually thinking about those facts can get in the way of the study, regurgitate, forget, repeat process and is therefore detrimental to one's grades.

How do you know? With all that secrecy anyone could be there for any reason. I have no problem with the government/military imprisnoning or even killing terrorists. But nobody except those directly involved know who is in Guantanamo or why.
I use my smartphone to study flashcards, browse the internet (somtimes for productive reasons) and more when my wife is driving. Would all of these things be disabled too?

(fill in the blank with cellphone, computer, porcupine, etc...) You have to outlaw the distracted driving tools, not the distracted driving! Otherwise you are so last century!
Outside of a few select cities it is quite a bit harder here to live without transportation. Homes, jobs and grocery stores are much farther apart. Public transportation is far less developed. Pull too many drivers licenses and you end up with a lot more panhandlers living on the street.

1) Not everyone in a moving vehicle is the driver. I can imagine no viable way for the cellphone to determine this.
2) Cellphones can provide navigation with real-time traffic updates and rerouting.
3) In much of the country radio really sucks. Pandora is better.
