See below for links.. these are separate organizations of government.

I think the congressional hearings are far, far too used. I watch as ignorant senators call up Goldman Sachs or Toyota and grill them on practices and safety. Meanwhile, they can't pass a budget for the bloated, ignorant government to run on. Senators act like royalty, yet they're the ones trading on insider information and often the ones who caused the problem with restrictive laws or regulations in the first place.

The gut instinct of all of us, when we see an article like this,l is to say, "My privacy is important!" and to be a little thankful for the government to be the oversight when we feel powerless, *yet* its the government who is tapping out phones, e-mails and electronic communication illegally. Am I the only one who recognizes how bad things have become??!

  7. iChat encryption? Think again, and pay the tax! on Mac OS X 10.4.3 Released · · Score: 0, Redundant

I got excited about iChat encryption - I think iChat with iSight is phenominal, and I regularly use three-way video chat with my parents and sister back in the States (from Japan). The video compression and rendering is excellent - it's saved a fortune and it's better even than the mega-buck one we use at my fortune 500 company. I regularly talk to upper managment (all who use OSX .. coincidental?) about it and they've questioned why we pay so much for VC software when iSight costs ~$150/camera (1 mac for each conference room would be a drop in the bucket).

So I thought encryption would help iSight/Chat move up to some of the security requirements some businesses may have for video conferencing software. I try to enable it at home and I got this:

"You need to sign up for a .Mac account to enable iChat encryption."

What the Frell? I have to pay the .Mac tax to get a feature on the core OS? For shame, Apple... for shame!

Additionally, I had a major issue when I upgraded, and I wasn't alone according to the discussions on the Apple support site. All my firewire devices freaked out and wouldn't come online. Not my LaCie, not my EyeTV.

I rebooted once, after the initial 10.4.3 reboot load, and everything started behaving. But now I'm a bit scared to reboot again. Lesson learned? Don't upgrade on the first day :-)

My wife and I share the same computer at home, and thank God for "Fast User switching" - especially because she's a Japanese native and I'm from the US. One click and a password entry and she's got her own desktop with menus in Kanji.

But the downside of sharing the same computer is trying to share the same files. Apple puts a "Shared" folder under the home directory root. Does this mean my wife and I can easily work on the same file? No. Permissions are a bitch - I fiddle and fiddle, but things always get reset and eventually gave up. I'm hoping ACLs are going to add a lot for collaboration on the same server.

Farscape is the only show I've watched, in the past five years, that I've followed religiously. It's hard to explain it to anyone how much you can get into it, but it was sooo well done; it's cancellation by SciFi really made me loose interest in T.V. -- besides The Simpsons, what shows are out there that are long lasting?

My girlfriend's Japanese, and she was telling me of this soap she used to watch that her father watches, that was on for literally 20 years. Unfortunatly, the tv execs don't invest in shows that much here. They want quick, easy cash... and eventually it's going to hurt them.

Anyway my point: it is not routine, they're considering making flights routine, and frankly I'm all for it. We need to prtect our airspace (anyone who doesn't agree with me has been in a coma for the last year and a half) and, most importantly now, our port security and waterways.

  15. LD not ADHD??? on Dealing with ADHD and Other Problems in Young Children? · · Score: 1

Perhaps it's a learning disability (LD), not ADHD (which is often over-diagnosed and trated with un-necessary drugs).

My sister has a LD and had quite a lot of trouble with school. She was very smart and still did poorly. Luckly, my mom found out some information about learning disabilities before she bought into the "ADHD craze".

Basically, with a learning disability, there's a sort of short-wiring with the way the brain interprets some hearing, so in effect, it's very difficult to hear things and understand them correctly. Often things need to be repeated two or three times in order to be comprehended or learned.

There are ways that this can be dealt with, suttle little changes that can change her life. For example, the doctor my sister saw suggested tape recording lectures in order to play them later to understand. That worked wonders. There are other things, and symptoms that you should check out, before you decide ADHD is the only possible conclusion:

Hope this helps and that you seek out alternatives before giving into the fad of ADHD and drugs as a treatment.

Thanks for posting this question, it's a good one. I have the same dilemma you have -- I want a window manager that I don't have to use the mouse to navigate and use. Additionally, I prefer a desktop without a lot of fancy icons or control panels that get in the way of the windows I'm working in.

A few years ago I tried out Window Maker, as I was looking for an Afterstep alternative. At the time, kde was an infant and gnome was in the same nursery. Afterstep was getting to bloated and slow, and when I tried out Window Maker I was in heaven! It was fast, lightweight and clean. My only complaint is that every time a new app is launched, an icon is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

As far as key bindings are concerned, everything is customizable. I use my keyboard to move virtual desktops all the time. Actually this is one of the things Window Maker wins me with -- I can jump from virtual window 1 to virtual window 3 by just typing "Alt-3" sort of a la Linux virtual consoles. I can also cycle through windows making them active "Alt-tab" or kill windows (read: Netscape annoying javascript banner pop-up adds)

I haven't tried the other window managers people have suggested, but I will be soon. If you want to get something up quick, without having to do a lot of customization, try out Window Maker for a while.
