i agree, and i'd add that if i wanted to run linux, the last thing i would do would be pay the premium for apple hardware. sure, it's pretty looking, but wouldn't you rather be able to replace just a small part of it if something breaks?

There's an awesome aspect in steampunk culture that is concerned with practicality as well, though...google 'steampunk keyboard' to see what I mean. IANASP, but the element of the steampunk aesthetic that really impresses me is the imagining of real-world devices with a late nineteenth century twist.

I agree with parent...these don't look practical at all; any self-respecting steampunk warrior would be better off with a trusty .45. ;)

I don't know what your system looks like, but if you have Pro Tools or any software that will run as a VST host, you can use Source-Connect to stream broadcast-quality audio from one of your systems to the other. Source Elements, the company that makes the software, claims that you need at least 300kbps down for it to work, although I would recommend going higher than that, personally.

The catches are that a. it costs $400 for the basic version (only allowing you a connection to one other user at a time), and you'll need an iLok, and b. there can be up to a second of latency. Due to the latter problem, I wouldn't recommend using it in a live broadcast setting, but you should be able to edit out the latency and keep it sounding natural if you're putting a podcast together for later distribution.

Hope this has been at least somewhat helpful--this is a fairly exciting new technology that's just making its way into commercial voiceover production, and once they iron out the latency issue (it is kind of annoying, especially for actors trying to do dialog) I could see it saving everyone a lot of money by doing away with ISDN entirely. And good riddance.

seriously. on top of short deadlines much of the time (say, newspaper design), most of these industries are so tightly woven that failure to finish a task even once could kill your reputation and your business permanently, especially if you're young.

without getting into anything of how i feel about computers, the consequences of a car not working are far, far beyond the consequences of computer failure. i can think of very, very few (like zero) situations in which failure of your personal computer would cost you your life. the comparison is a cute one, but i don't quite buy it. as far as linux vs windows, there's something to be said for standards--i love the idea of open source software, but when you need to do something that other people are going to have to work on, you really pretty much need to be running the same software as they are. it's the reason pro tools has remained so dominant in the audio industry (my field of relative expertise) even though there is software out there that arguably offers superior functionality, is cheaper, and doesn't require dedicated (overpriced, crappy) hardware. but everyone would have to switch at once, and that's just not practical--so here we are.

unintentional public performance or not, i imagine that the, er, rather elevated level of driving risk to both parties (viewer and unwitting broadcaster) caused by the viewer following the broadcaster closely enough to see the movie for long enough to make it worthwhile would probably provide a better incentive against this practice than the **aa could ever hope for out of any court...

To keep up with Mac OS upgrades (which is often necessary since back-compatibility is not a strong suit of Apple's), you end up spending $129 a lot more often than you spend $400 on a new version of Windows. Price ends up being about the same either way.

I mentioned above--I like both. But looking at any OS on the market as a silver-bullet solution is oversimplifying the matter.

My (extremely well-cared-for) XP install is by far the most stable system I have ever used. That includes every update of OS X since Jaguar (the only real competitor on the market, I'm sorry to say, for any but a relative handful of power users). If you run Firefox and decent virus protection, it is quite possible to be malware-free on Windows, and I have seen far, far more kernel panics than blue screens in the last five years. For reference, I worked in student IT support at a midsize university for two years and I am now a sound engineer and technician at a recording studio; thus, I am Mac-only at work and PC-only at home (well, I just inherited an old laptop from my girlfriend and installed FC6 on it to poke at, but that's not my primary machine by any means). I love Macs and PCs both, and the next complete computer system I buy (since my PC is a frankenbox) will likely be a Mac. Maybe if the price of Windows machines goes up, especially at the low end of the market, a Mac will seem a more viable option for some consumers--I know the price is what has kept me from getting one thus far.

most of the libraries i've been to don't loan the kind of music that the 'average american listener' wants. i've seen a lot of jazz, 'world' music, and orchestral stuff, but you don't so much find the latest popular releases there. as far as thirty-second previews, i suppose that works for music that has a single verse and a single chorus repeated constantly, but what if you listen to music that actually has some sort of progression in it? what if (god forbid in this day and age) you actually think an artist can put out a whole album of good music, and that an album might even be greater than the sum of its parts? then again, if that's the kind of music you listen to, most of the albums you're downloading probably aren't released on RIAA labels anyway, so maybe it's less of an issue.
