He also mentioned, in Fountains of Paradise about a news aggregation service that went out every day and searched the planet for stories that an individual may be interested in. I think his were, 'circle, squaring of the' & 'loch ness monster, discovery'. Not quite the same Google Alerts that I have (one is 'Arthur C Clarke' incidentally, but still good ones none the less.
All it would take would be a little wizard that runs when you try and install your new router that prompted for a router password, ESSID & security string so it can generate a 64-bit key, hell even email the bloody info to them once it is typed in. What the hell, give people no option, it'd be better than nothing.
I drooled over the ZX80 brochures, but didn't fancy my chances at building one successfully. I got my ZX81 a couple of years after. I bought my 16K RAM pack for £50 a year after that... the world was my oyster. If I ever have to use Tippex to mark the appropriate volume control on a portable audio cassette player again, it'll be too bloody soon.
I'm still perplexed by the lack of built in GPS in higher end digital cameras. I think location & orientation information would be huge, and surely doable righ now, especially with the recent advances in GPS technology. Imagine going on vacation and being able to pull all that handy GPS info right into something like Google Earth. Now thats handy.
I always check http://resellerratings.com/ for some kind of backup. I did buy a camera from 'bait & switch' mob a few years ago, I got it, but it wasn't pleasant. My last online camera purchase was from 'Beach Camera', no problems at all.
I had a friend who always logged in as root and su'ed around from user to user. He was in a subdirectory of his home directory as himself, trying to blow it all away. He didn't have rights as he had created some stuff as root. Remembering that he had su'ed to himself from root, he ctrl-d'ed back to root and successfully ran the 'rm -r *' command. Once the command had been running for about 30-45s he realised it really shouldn't be taking that long, and root had been at '/' when he su'ed to himself. A fair chunk of everything was gone and a complete reload needed...
I'll admit that it is very pretty looking and continues the whole desktop idea.
How about a, near, one time use tablet PC, lets call it paper, comes with number of user specified styli. You can sort it easily, put it in folders, filing cabinets, even on microfiche for high capacity storage. It is a 2D device that you can interact with in your 3D environment. Doesn't even need a jacked up graphics card. You can buy very cheap extensions that will allow support up however many bloody colours they have in the shop. Advaced users can create 3D models with it. Comes in packs called reams.....

We just came back up. The emails are flooding in, oh goody.
We're Sprint and we are still down.... :-S
As do we, but we are horribly, horribly, but a little refreshingly, down.
I'm a big Sun bigot, always have been. But where does this sit. Seems like a solution without a problem to me...
Being from Scotland, I can assure you that it just feels like 450+ days of rain in a year.
Speaking as a Brit who's parents bought the Sun while he grew up, was every any point in going beyond page 3... You know what I'm talking about...
... until the TiVo v's MythTV flamewar begins... for the nth time
You'll be moving to Texas then....

They do say that the first 0.00047% is the toughest so they're all set.... oh wait a minute.

If there's one thing Slashdot really needs, it's more references to Terry Pratchett
