A bit OT, but here's one for you: I had an MRSA, which was treated by IV Vancomycin. MRSA came back. Again, I was treated with IV antibiotics. This went on every 2-1/2 to 3 months for nearly two years, I nearly lost my leg and suffered a great deal of pain. Finally, after doing some research, I found that colloidal silver (only the kind produced by HVAC method) might work. It did. No doctor, no hospital required. So yes, that opened my eyes a bit. And your evidence is...?
Looks to me like this is an excellent time to read up on alternative treatment methods, as the barabaric, for-profit
US "healthcare system" appears hell-bent on becoming less and less available to those of us with imperfect health
and fewer than several gazillions of dollars.
I used to perchlorate my coffee every morning, but then I read that the drip method actually gives you more caffeine. So the mars people are stuck with 1960s technology then?
That's just silly. The numbers (if accurate) are very good news for Linux, considering the bazillions of dollars MS has put into pushing Vista. Of course their numbers are higher! Besides, every customer who goes home with a Vista box is an excellent candidate for using Linux in the future.
If FOSS were a restaurant, it would be of a type that if you don't like what's on the menu you may use the kitchen to make something else you prefer, with your choice of ingredients in stock or BYO. Since I doubt there are any restaurants like that, I believe your analogy fails.
I thought this open source stuff was about the fact everybody could contribute to the program if they wanted, but apparently I thought wrong. Apparently only uber-geeks with a masterful command programming knowledge can work to improve open source software.
Your high horse is showing.:) If you don't like my GPL'd interface, you are free to design one of your own and hire someone else to code it for you, if necessary. FOSS does not mean, "anything you want, gratis!". It means if you don't like something you have the freedom to change it. I have little respect for those who use the word "free" as an excuse to try to hold up developers with their limitless opinion-based suggestions. Some projects are very open to user suggestions, others are very tied to following a well-defined vision. Neither model is "incorrect". No-one is forcing anyone to use any GPL software "as-is", that's the whole point. It's not so you can get your way while contributing nothing but opinions. Though occasionally you may get lucky like that.:)
Okay, I know these are unpopular things to say, but I feel they need saying. These are just my opinions.
(1) "Usability" is in the mind of the user. If you learned how to use some other system first and now expect that any other way of doing
things isn't "usable" enough, that's just plain old resistance to change. It says more about you than it does about the usability of the
software in question.
(2) "Designers" who can't code have absolutely no business "working" in software. If you think you really know how an interface should
work and look, then learn to code it. Otherwise, you're just a critic of the kind that the NYT doesn't hire.
Personally, I find FBSD, Debian, Slackware, and the majority of GNU software to be quite usable. Of course, I don't expect everything to
be zero effort, either. Anything worth doing takes a bit of effort. Speaking of which, tried Windows lately? Now to me, that's really
hard to use! But then, I don't want to learn the "Windows way" of doing everything, as I fail to see the pay off in it.
...you can just hear the maniacal cackling of the engineers of the Third Reich. Weird how the more time passes, the more it appears they didn't lose the war, after all.
It is just as illegal to intercept US mail in order to open it, read or photocopy it, reseal it, and send it on to its destination. So that difference doesn't exist, and deletion/theft is not the line. Privacy is the line.
No, that's an incorrect assumption. What I'm doing is pointing out the equivalence of purpose, i.e., personal, private communication. It just didn't occur to me I had to specify it, as it struck me as rather obvious.
Assuming someone set it up as a POP account to download every minute
That seems like a silly argument. The default is usually every 10 minutes or more, isn't it?
I would expect most mail servers to block an IP scheduling a check every minute. I know mine would.
"I don't think people are of the understanding that this type of conduct is a crime," said Scott Christie,
a former federal prosecutor who headed up the computer hacking and intellectual property section at the U.S. Attorney's Office in New
Jersey.
The other FA goes on to state that the reporter being charged accessed his coworker's email over 500 times ! So IMO it is
really not possible to "go too far" punishing someone with that level of utter disregard for the rights of others.
According to wiki.answers:
"The deliberate withholding and/or opening of US mail that is addressed to another party is a violation of federal law.
The penalty for tampering with US mail is a maximum of 5 years in a federal facility and/or a $250,000 fine."
Sounds reasonable to me. The thing I find incredible is that people aren't making that correlation between email snooping and tampering with the mail? Oh well, ignorance of the law has never been an excuse for violating it. Maybe after a few people get big sentences and fines for their asshattery everyone will know it is illegal.
While all this certainly has lots of scary potential, I have firm faith in the incompetence of bureaucrats and civil servants everywhere. And having worked for the SSA, believe me, I've seen it in action. The main danger is still the same as it always was, regardless of the tech involved. Namely, that some psycho with a badge will take a dislike to you, for whatever reason.
Use of "use of $some_despised_expression shall be considered proof that $some_insult" shall be considered proof of childishness. There, fixed that for you!
The obit is premature. Usually when a service "dies" it would mean it's no longer available, but anyone can still buy usenet access
here,
here,
here,
here,
here,
here,
here, or
here.
And that is by no means a complete list. If anything, usenet may actually return to a more usable medium again, now that it won't be free
for all the spammers and trolls anymore. Then again, it may well not -- it's not like all the illegal traders will just give up and go
away, so I guess it depends on how much money the **IA, the BSA, and the morality police want to spend on "eradicating the problem".
TFS concedes this is neother "practical" nor a "jet pack", yet still trumpets the headline
"Practical Jetpack Available 'Soon'"? Well, I guess all it needs is a line at the end saying,
"Ha -- made you look!".
It is also possible they are just ignorant or haven't thought it through.
It's their job to be informed, and to "think it through". Oh, so ignorance and stupidity excuse what amounts to treason now? What will it take for the people of this nation to adopt a zero tolerance policy regarding government shenanigans?
You seem to be forgetting the concept of open source governance.
No, I haven't forgotten. That's very nice and all, but no teeth == no power == meaningless.
Don't get me wrong, I am watching hopefully. But it is no solution to actual problems of today. What are they going to do, send an RMS clone out to slap comcast around? On second thought, while perhaps less than effective, it sure would be fun. If y'all do that, can I go along?:)

Here you can RTFA all on one page.

Damn that 120 character limit! OTOH, I guess that's what I get for being such a smartass. :)

No, GIR! Take me to the equipment room, NOW!
Here comes the neighborhood!

Yeah, FOSS is *so* far behind that MS is desperately throwing money around trying to get a foot in the FOSS door. "Dear Know-Nothing", indeed!
What, in England?!

Great! Now, all they have to do is combine that with this, and we can all sleep soundly.
