Why the hell does anyone need more than their book & a passport anyway?
Because airlines lose luggage all the time. If I'm traveling with checked luggage, I put at least one change of clothes and things I'll need right away in my carry on. If I am traveling light, I only take a carry on. That way I avoid waiting at baggage claim and don't have to worry about my luggage getting lost.
In the 1920s cigarettes were much more of a luxury item than the "staple" they've since become.
Sure, factory made cigarettes were a luxury, but people would roll their own, or smoke pipes and cigars.
smokers wouldn't have interrupted their 1920s workday for a cigarette break -- their bosses would most likely have forbidden it.
Of course they wouldn't have taken a cigarette break. They would've just smoked on the job! See, back when people could smoke INSIDE the building, the cigrarette break didn't exist.
Maybe she would have gotten better advice if she had consulted a dentist rather than a doctor.
