Nah, stomp on their beliefs with science repeatedly until they either give up or move far far away from rational folks.

Science IS religion's enemy. They contradict one another, as you say 'mix very badly'. As such one is right and another is wrong. Just obliterate the irrational views until they paint themselves into a very tiny corner and leave them there. We are playing too nice and it is hurting us (us being atheists).

Watch the glenn beck rally of a few days ago. And realize that the religious are moving to try and obliterate atheism. The words used were scary. Part of the speech he talked about coming together and working together. Saying that everyone has differences in opinion that we can debate about anything in America, even the fundamentals. Ending on a 'but we are united in our belief that GOD is the only true answer'. 35% of americans support the tea party movement.

At this rate, playing it nice, atheists are going to get steamrolled and forced back into the closet before we get it together at all. It'd be more pathetic than the gay movement 1950-1970. I think I'll end this rant on a quote.

"No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God." -- G.W. Bush

It is huge investment with monumental payoffs but fairly high risks.

The only reason this hasn't been done is because there are only a handful of people that could possibly attempt this. And they aren't exactly visionaries (re us/russian government). Once some group leads the way with a proof of concept (which significantly lowers the risk) expect others to follow. You do know that places like Ethiopia, Egypt, Russia and Pakistan have better economic equality than the US? Along with some ~90 other countries with higher rates of equality. Which includes the bulk or all of the EU.

And while crime rates in the US are lower than brazil's, they ARE comparable to pakistan's (nearly tied homicide rates). Which is around 3~4x what the EU rates.

And the US can't exactly brag about race equality. Black men are 6.5x as likely to be jailed as whites in present day America (worse than south africa during apartheid...). Brown people and any Sikh or Muslim living in America today will attest to the terrifying racism going on today. And your track record isn't great either...

And to put this back on topic, according to wikipedia (which could never lie :p) you are wrong. Brazil is part of 'the west'. I think south america doesn't make the cut for you due to language. The countries you listed speak english quite comfortably. South america not so much. But they DO speak a european based language. Just one not as familiar to you.
